A 1990s Dolby Surround Pro-Logic Setup (Using Hifi VHS) | IMNC

  • Back in the 90s, Dolby Surround in the home was quite a bit different to what we're accustomed to today. Discrete 5.1 audio has become extremely affordable, but not too long ago, 4 channel Dolby Surround was considered a high end statement. In this video, I chat about a typical late 80s / early 90s Dolby Surround Pro-Logic system working in conjunction with VHS Hifi. This may feel like an ancient dead format to some, but the sound quality still blows me away.
Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

Fun fact: VHS, due to nuances of how it was designed, if used in a specific way, can provide some of the best audio quality possible for any tape based medium. Granted, this is using the video track areas to store audio signals, but it's still usable, for whatever purpose someone might have for such.
Semi related, but always worth mentioning.

Fond memories of a similar setup. The SP50 was already the second generation, the previous RV351 looked the same but came with the original chipset with a very poor channel separation. Pro logic improved the separation considerably and for a while the home theatre systems had better Dolby chipsets than many commercial cinema processors because cinemas would not invest to upgrade the surround circuit to newer PCB Revisions unless the old one was faulty.

A nostalgia, i’m 35 and when I was growing up, my dad purchased a 25” Panasonic Dolby Surround Pro.Logic tv, with four external Panasonic speakers and integrated stand. I if I could, would have it back in a min, it was paired up with a matching Panasonic vcr NV-HS650, side loading, jog shuttle the works. Fantastic all in early to mid 90’s charcoal ABS plastic awesome.

Didn't know Surround Sound existed on VHS. So people made home theaters based on VHS?
As for the speakers, it isn't hard to get some speaker drums and tweeters, and build yourself a set of matching speakers.

TGOTR Yeah you wouldn't believe what started on vhs. high definition originally came on vhs as vhs tape was the only soure that could store 50gbs of data. Check out D-VHS or D-THEATER

Hope that your move went well. I have a late 90's Pioneer VSX Dolby ProLogic Receiver setup with my late 80's BSR Graphic Equalizer, I'm using a number of VCR-DVD recorders (Emerson & Magnavox) with my 90's Pioneer 3-way 12'' woofer front channel speakers with my 1975 JBL Decade L25's (2-way 10"" woofer with soft dome tweeters) for the rear surround sound speakers. It rocks! Because I don't have a sub-woofer, the rear speakers which process as low as 20Hz and are wonderful in attaining smooth mid-range response as well combined with the soft dome tweeters, really add big-room dimension even in the smallest environments. I recently purchased a 5.1 surround sound speaker system which is unpowered. My Pioneer cranks enough power to the system, but because it does not include a center channel on the receiver, I'm trying to determine the best way to achieve connecting the center channel speaker to my receiver - possibly cross-wiring the front left and right into the center channel, perhaps? I'd like to hear your suggestion(s) for accomplishing this. Thanks for posting. Yes- The Matrix is a great movie , but I have another favorite for surround sound (ProLogic anyway), and it's Pink Floyd "The Wall" - especially at the beginning just when the maid opens the door to his hotel room and the music just blast right out at you as he is discovered to have trashed the place!

I have the same pre-amp, but mine is the Philips branded RV450. I've got it hooked into a set of late 90s Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 computer speakers via 3 RCA->3.5mm cables. Youd be surprised by how many devices that put out stereo actually downmix DPL. Even my motherboard has an option for it.

As somewhat of a "home video snob", I can't imagine a day when you spent good time and money on a great home theater setup, just to have to watch a movie in low quality VHS. Blu Ray and 4K have really spoiled me.

  • @gmancarini1

So awesome Tom. I don't personally have a use for a set up like that, but it would be awesome to hear in person. I have 3 surround sound set ups. Being away at College, I have my Logitech Z906 set up with me. It does an amazing job with surround sound in my opinion and it's compact enough to have in a small living room. At my parents house, I have a Yamaha receiver with Harmon/Kardon speakers and subwoofer and that is actually a 7.2 channel set up. And then in my Attic, I have an Epson projector along with a Sony receiver and some Polk Audio full sized fronts, KLH rears and a Bose sub. Definitely the worst sounding out of the three set ups but still sounds great for what it is and considering I paid less than $100 for all the equipment apart from the projector. Anyways, awesome video as always, can't wait to see what happens in the new house!!!

+gmancarini1 Thanks so much for the comment! Really glad you like it. Your setups sound fantastic, really good stuff. I'm hoping to run 2 surround setups at my new place, both in the living room. One will be a modern 5.1 system for Blu Ray, streaming and gaming and the other will be what you see here or a very similar version of what you see here for older sources. I may have explained that in the video but anyways, I'll be making vids on this stuff so hopefully you'll catch those :)

Great video Tom. I too love the VHS format; especially in terms of sound. 2 Movies spring to mind; Meat Loaf's 'To Hell and Back', and the Tina Turner autobiographical film "what's love got to do with it". The latter film in particular is not only an incredible movie but also features some incredible rock and blues music so if you don't have it I'd pick up a copy. I'm not sure if it supports Dolby, but either way it sounds stunning especially on VHS.
In terms of rear speakers, personally I'd grab a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.0s as they can be had new for next to nothing and have that vintage sound and the 'kick' you're looking for while also being very small. If you really wanted vintage, pretty much any of the Technics models from between 1980 and 1984 will give you the sound you're after and a sound that matches your SB-3030 fronts. Out of interest, will you be using the JVC A-X2 in the home hi-fi setup?

Was it possible to get 5.1 Dolby digital in this era or was everything being up mixed from stereo, when I was a kid my dad had a sick 5.1 system with a laserdisc player and a 60in rear projection TV. I thought that it was all native Dolby digital at the time, turns out laserdisc doesn't carry a 5.1 mix. BTW my dad was such a ball back then we didn't even own a VHS player

Hi Tom. I know you want to stay with Technics as far as surround and what not, might I suggest looking into a set of vintage Bose Acoustimass 5 series 2 or 3 speakers? Either that or take a look at the vintage Acoustimass 3 series 2 or 3's. I would say go with the 5's because the cubes swivel to direct sound in whatever direction you want while the 3 only have single cubes. Plus having the included Acoustimass Bass Module will give you even more low end. Just a thought.
