If humic acid is extracted that easily from compost, then why does Elaine's compost tea recipe call for humic acid to be included in addition to 15 pounds of compost? Wouldn't the humic acid from the 15 pounds of compost be enough for the tea brewing process?
This gets asked in every compost tea vid i watch and I still haven't heard these experts answer it...
That's not humic acid. That's compost tea. Humic acid still remains in the wet compost in the bag.

Wikipedia says in quotes "Humic substances are coloured recalcitrant organic compounds naturally formed during long-term decomposition and transformation of biomass residues. The colour of humic substances varies from yellow to brown to black. Humic substances represent the major part of organic matter in soil, peat, coal and sediments and are important components of dissolved natural organic matter in lakes (especially, dystrophic lakes), rivers and sea water.
Take away key terms.
Important component of disolved organic mater from long term decomposition of organic mater. I think that sounds a lot like compost tea. Maybe it's not pure humic acid, but it's bulk composition are very much humic substances which contain among various things, humic acid. 😊
Bro, its not even compost tea. What she describes is a weak compost extract.
Compost extract IS a mixture of fulvic and humic acid... commonly acidified to 3-2 ph the humic acids are insoluble thus humics start to settle and the pure fulvic acid can be decanted... this experiment can be used to prove fulvic and humic acids presense in compost or worm bin leachates.
I believe that is considered to be a compost tea which may contain humic acid but not be humic acid itself.

Why make the extra step of making humic acid from compost to neutralise tap water when you will be brewing the neutralised water in the compost again? Can you just brew it in said compost straight away assuming that humic acid will be released from the compost during brewing to neutralise the chloramine?
How much times we can, pass water from it?
Would it be possible to drink for human supplemental consumption if made with your own organic humus from just autumn leaves?

What do we do with the humic acid that we collect from our compost?
use it as a fungal food for compost tea for one thing
It's primary role is to promote cation exchange.......making more nutrient available in a water soluble form at the root zones.

compost tea is made by aerating compost in water for a certain amount of time by doing so you multiple the good bacteria in it, this is slowly letting water run through the compost to draw humic acid out with the water
What is the shelf life of this? What is the ideal ratio of compost:water? I’m currently making one with 1:1 ratio.
I do a 15:1 and constant feed it instead of plain water. The only plain water my plants get is from rain.

What happens if you shake/stir the cheesecloth to extract the humic acid?
Get a large garbage can fill it with shredded leaves and water it. Drill a hole and put a spigot at the bottom. Place some kind of mesh screen at the bottom near the spigot to keep dirt from accumulating in it. I'm getting about a quart of humic acid a week. It's very dark Brown and I mix it about 15 to 1 with water. Whenever my plants need water that's what I give them. The only plain water they get is when it rains. And I have multiple composting cans going.
My well water is very alkaline, I also live next to a massive reserve forest which includes wetland (New England wetland). What if I pick up some of that rich soil & run my well water through it? It's nit terribly concentrated, but it'd work on my garden boxes ... I think.
Is this an extraction of humates? If so, is the input carbon found in the compost the source?
I have a 100 gallon garbage can composter that I tapped with a spigot at the bottom. Once a week I run some hose water on the top. What comes out a few days later from the tap is very dark Brown liquid. Humic acid.
That's just compost tea. Humic acid is soluble in alkaline solutions. Try adding potassium hydroxide.

Would you use this humic acid as is or dilute?
I would use it as is since it's already diluted with water and it came from only 1-2 cups of compost.
I have broken down wood chips. Is the humic acid in that ? I am trying to make the tap water here in Melbourne Victoria Australia free from Chloramine out if the water to use

What are some uses for this?
For making fungal dominant compost teas and for foliar sprays. It's really powerful!

Humic acids: larger molecules that bridge between clay particles and minerals, pH Buffer, stimulates the activity of H+ ATPase enzyme which is a proton pump present in the cell membranes of plant roots (increases the “voltage” and uptakes more nutrients like a magnetic pump while producing phosphate at the same time at the root membrane), the membranes pump protons, so inside the membrane is negatively charged and the outside is positively charged, so they can solubilize more, expanding CEC range, intermediate chelator, Virginia Tech Study: 5 parts Humic Acid, 2 parts Kelp, 5: 2 stimulates the plant to create 50% more of a plant protective agent: superoxide dismutase.; It sponges free radicals, turns on enzymes which are biological catalysts, makes trace minerals available esp iron, over 60 trace elements
Would this be safe for human consumption? And would reducing to a paste with heat destroy certain properties (beneficial microbes, nutrient profiles, etc)?
Is this homemade humic acid as strong as the powdered ones you can by for which they say to add no more than a teaspoon to your 5 gallon tea brewer? Or would you want to use more of it?. Also, how long does it keep?

It's not brewed, so it's not tea, but great question!! It's an extract essentially.
@@ThePermacultureStudent wouldn't it be good to partly compost it? i just got my blood drawn and im kinda hyper, probably thanks to the wim hof method. can multiple species of mushroom grow in the same space without "competing" like inside of a tree can you have more than one mushroom type acting together
Check it out again: humic acid comes from compost. Fungi competes for resources, so you can have fungi fight over a substrate and they can both be mushroom bearing types of fungi. @@monkeymanwasd1239
