I love how Mike explains everything the do 's and donts and and why it could have happened ,and how to fix it and he also shows you so that it's easy and not that hard Ty Mike
I have always had good results from squirting cleaner up the end of the shaft and coating the outside to let it soak into it between the wafers. If it doesn't go in I try to lever between the wafers to open a small gap for it to soak in.
I have done it by spraying the contact cleaner on the part of the channel switch facing up and let it soak in between the layers of plastic slowly. It works, but looks like your way of doing it would get more cleaner in the switch and work much faster.
You and I were separated at birth.. I've been drilling holes in those Bar-Stards for years. Using the same type of tool to do it as well. Also works well on those sealed mil-spec pots and have saved some tiny toggle switches the same way. How's it go? Great minds run around in circles? Something like that. :-)
Great minds think alike. :) And I to have done that to sealed pots. Non serviceable, nonsense. Nothing is non serviceable if you expend a little brain smoke.
Probably a little rarer but I had the dial tuning rotary encoder go bad on my TenTec RX-340 receiver actually go bad many moons ago and ended up having to replace it...may have been worth the effort to try to clean it. It's actually around here somewhere in a box and now you've got me curious at to the viability of rehabbing one of them...onto the project queue that goes! (Yes, I know a rotary encoder isn't a switch per se but it still does have a mechanical aspect to it).
These can be taken apart but its a lot of work and then you have to drill some holes for screws since originally it just has the plastic melted into a blob.
You explain things really good and easy I understand thank you and keep the good work I wish I could send you my galaxy 95 tea to you my turn on switch broke it’s on or use a screwdriver to get how to use it no more but the radio still works it needs a new switch where are you located I am in Indiana
Mike - the Uniden PRO640e radios - they've been known to have the channel LED's burn out. Do you think there's a chance this is worth trying on a 640e just in case it's just a dirty switch?
Hey mike would u happen to know what size or what do I need to know to be able to order the 7 or 8 pin ribbon cable on the channel display? I see common ribbon cable in ebay but it don’t have the spacing like the grant does
I mean no disrespect, But you do not need to strip the selector or drill holes in it just for dirty contacts, Simply flatten the end of the straw on the tin of switch cleaner stand the radio face down and place the flattened tip of the straw against the gap on the side of the shaft at the back of the selector and give one or two quick bursts then spin the selector knob a few times and repeat again if needed and the switch cleaner will go inside the switch cleaning the contacts, If you have too much switch cleaner [a small puddle] on the back leave it a few seconds and it will eventually all seep inside, This is much easier and no risk of destroying the pins inside the switch.
Thanks!! I have an issue with a Connex that I bought used. It has a bad display segment and sometimes does a "scan" of the channels which stops when I dial the channel selector switch back a channel (its weird). I hope this fixes this, I will update you all. Thanks!!
I found going by a Cobra 25 year of manufacture is not reliable for ordering a channel display,I have a 1996 Cobra 25 which should have a Common Cathode 2D04C?? display when tested with a DMM with 200 Ohm resistance setting common to ground will light the segments to test the display. Mine is Common Anode which means common is the positive voltage and the other pins go to ground to light the segments to test the display - depending on where it was made it could have either, the only way to know if the numbers are not visible is an ohm meter test.

That works like a charm Mike. A lot easier than taking the switch apart like I shown in video #40. This makes it quick. Another great video my friend.
Buddy,
I was going to recommend watching your video on how to take apart the switch, but you beat me to it. :-)

Mike, thanks for the video where you were discussing Pace solder equipment. I have used all kinds and just got a Pace and its great. Ron
Fixed my 148 GTL. Thanks Mike. 😀
Hope to see new videos soon.
Great video. I wish he was still open and doing repairs.
What happened to him ?

Thanks for the video. I was thinking about drilling holes, but was not sure. So you answered my question.
Again thanks!
That is a very nice service tip! Thanks for sharing Mike! 73

Tricks of the trade! No substitution for experience.
good tip,, how about a hot tip to melt plastic for better chance no grit in side

Yeah, I took a very small amount of 91% isopropyl alcohol and dropped it in that very area and my channel selector came to life.
