How to make Sugar Cookies!
Sorry I haven't been posting as much, life is very busy with 3 kids these days. Thanks for watching!
Not "the Best" but Best is my name ;)
Sugar Cookie Recipe: www.bakingwithb...
Ingredients
1 cup of softened unsalted butter (227 grams)
1 and 1/2 cups of sugar (300 grams)
2 eggs room temperature
2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract
3 and 1/2 cups of all purpose flour (450 grams)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Method
1. In a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy
2. Add the eggs one at a time. Beating each time until just combined
3. Add vanilla extract and beat until combined
4. Mix baking powder, salt and flour.
5. Add flour mixture to butter mixture about 1/2 cup a time.
6. Turn mixer back on, and mix until everything is combined. Once your mixer can’t do anymore, mix with your hands until you have a smooth dough if needed.
7. Separate dough quarters and wrap each quarter in plastic wrap. You want each quarter to resemble a pancake for easy rolling.
8. Refrigerate for about one hour or until firm enough to roll.
9. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and place rack in center of oven. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
10. Remove one quarter of the chilled dough and, on a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2cm using a floured rolling pin. Keep turning the dough as you roll, adding more flour if needed, making sure the dough does not stick to the counter.
11. Cut out desired shapes using a lightly floured cookie cutter and transfer cookies to baking sheet.
12. Place the baking sheets with the unbaked cookies in the refrigerator for a minimum of 15 minutes. This will help cookies retain their shape while baking. (I like to do an hour for more complicated shapes).
13. Bake for 10minutes. (Could be anywhere from 8-14minutes). It depends on the size of your cookie and your cookie sheet or even your oven! For smaller cookies I would start checking at 8 min. Cookies will be done when edges are "just" starting to brown.
14. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.
15. Once cooled, frost with royal icing.

hey i just wanted to know...these cookies are the soft or the crunchy kind? thanks in advance?
harsha shetty they can be either. depending on how long you bake them for
Soo this is my second year using this recipe and it is my go-to!!! Last year I made at least 3 batches throughout the holidays. Depending on my cookie cutter size, sometimes I would get 50+ cookies! So easy, delicious, soft, and fool proof! Love love love it !
I just love reading this type of comment!! 💕 Thank you!!
I tried this recipe and the cookies came out perfect! Thank you for sharing.

How “sweet” of you to make this video for us 😂😉

I tried this recipe as a cut or log style cookie and they were simply scrumptious! This recipe is definitely my new go to for a fast and easy sugar cookie, thanks!
Yay!! So happy to hear! 😊
Also can i still do this with a hand mixer because my parents don't believe in stand mixers 😐.
You can even do it with a wooden spoon. No mixer required. Just need to use some more muscle 💪🏻😉 I’ve made it this way in the past with no problems.
Lol
What??
my parents dont even believe in mixer lol i always have to whisk my ass of with the wisker thingy
I am doing it now and i dont think you should
Thanks so much for this recipe! I’m a newbie at baking and the cookies turned out amazing! My butter was refrigerated and salted so I skipped the salt and mashed the butter up with a fork and add abit of hot water but it still turned out good :D I know it’s sugar cookies but maybe next time I’ll put in less sugar :)
Awesome!! So thank to hear! Yes, you could definitely try a little less sugar.
When I forget to put the butter out, I cut the butter the into lots of cubes, and it softens faster that way. 😁
Baking with Best thanks for the tip ! I’ll keep that in mind 😁 I was so worried at the start because it wasn’t looking like what you had until I added the flour thank god 😅😂
I don't have unsalted butter either, so I'll try what you did.
These tasted SOO good!

Good luck! ☺️
I I tried it out it turned out more like a biscuit than sugar cookies
Does the amounts of flour and baking soda make a big difference cuz I might have added too much flour
One cup of butter how many grams????look soooo tasty i will try this thank alot
227grams of butter. Hope you like them! :)
Heck the description
*check
Eugenie Tan the description is wrong. If 1 cup is 227g then you said 3 and a half cups was 400g and that is clearly very wrong. I have to get a different recipe now as I’m unclear on measurements.
It is about 227 grams [i got a bit confused aswell ]
Will it still taste good without the vanilla extract because I don’t have any
Yup! I’ve totally forgotten it in the past. Lol. No biggie!
This is awesome!

Those were the best sugar cookies I've had in a long time very simple recipe awesome delicious yummy 10 stars from this girl
So GLAD to hear! Thank you for sharing! 😁
For this recipe can I use a toaster oven and mix by hand?
For sure! I’d check the cookies at 6 min if in the toaster oven. As toaster ovens usually have thinner pans, and it may bake faster. You want to take the cookies out when the edges start to brown/change colour ever so slightly.
And no mixer, is fine! I use a wooden spoon and spatula.
Happy baking!
Thank you cookies came out great
So glad to hear!! 🤗
Can I use salted butter and no 1/4 teaspoon of salt, or will that not work?
You can definitely do that! :)
Love this recipe!
Thank you!
Hi! How long is the shelf life of this recipe when refrigerated, when freezed, and when baked? tia! ☺️
The dough, unbaked. 1 week refrigerated. 3 months in the freezer.
Baked I store in an air tight container at room temp. I usually like them within 2 weeks. Could push to 3 though.
Baked, frozen I wouldn’t go pass 3 months. That’s just what I’ve heard. I’ve personally never tried past a month. :)
Also I have frozen cookies decorated with no issues. :). Always defrost in the container at room temp.
This recipe looks really delicious! I've been looking for a good recipe for royal frosting cookies! I do have two questions tho, what size eggs did you use? And what were those white sticks you used when rolling out your dough? 😃
+Megan Gilson Thanks Megan! I use large eggs and the white sticks are AMAZING! They are "fondant spacers". These ones are by Fat Daddio's. I'm currently doing a big kitchen Reno, so when that's done I'll be making a video of my favourite tools. Those sticks are the best! Even rolled out cookies all the time. Thanks for watching! ☺️
Hello! I was wondering, how many cookies did you make out of this recipe? Loved your video!
Thanks! It really depends on your cookie cutter shape. And how thin you roll out the dough. I roll out to about 1/4 on an inch and recently made Christmas tree cookies (almost 3 inches each) and I got 55! But with larger cookies sometimes I’ve only gotten 20-25. So I say 20-45 on average. All depends on the shape :)
This recipe seems so easy! Is it good for cut out cookies & decorating w/royal icing? Thanks in advance!
Yup! This is what I use for all my cookies with royal icing. I’ve got another video posted with my icing recipe. 😁 This video is old, but still my go to! 🤗
i have never trid it yet but i will tri it
How many cookies does this recipe make? Love u ❤️
That is what I was asking
Hi! It all depends on the size of your cookie cutter. I made snowflakes, just over 2 inches, and I got nearly 60 cookies! But when I am making a cookie around 4 inches, I’ll only get around 25. Bigger the cookie cutter, less cookies. If you don’t need that many you can easily half the recipe :)
thx this is a really good video!!
Thank you so much! ☺️
@@BakingwithBest101 wow you really answered you are one of the youtubers that actually care!!!

@@BakingwithBest101 Your welcome!!
I want to make these cookies today. My question is can I just spread the dough out before baking it. Do I have to put it in the fridge? Can I just skip that part. And if I skip that part the cookies won’t rise, they will remain the same shape right ?
The dough will be quite warm to work with if you don’t chill first. I find it becomes too soft, and my dough will break with the cutters. That’s the main concern. One thing I do when in a time crunch, is roll out the dough between parchment, pop in the freezer on a tray for 20 min. And then the dough is firm enough to cut out. If you’re quick enough, you can pop that right in the oven without refrigerating again. Chilling the dough also helps the cookies keep their shape while baking. So if you have a specific shape, best to pop it in the fridge or freezer for 10 min before baking if you care about spreading. Hope that helps!!
Thank you for this recipe! I'm going to try and make them for my daughter's birthday
Happy baking! 😊
Hi there did you try the recipe how did it turn out?
Thank you
Thanks for watching!! ☺️
Hi thanks for sharing. Loved watching your son. Surely going to try.
Awh thanks! He’s 5 now! 😮 Happy baking!
@@BakingwithBest101 my grandson will complete 5 on November 10th.
How long can i store cookie dough in fridge , like how many days? xx
I don’t like to keep it longer than 7 days? :) Then it starts to become too dry to work with.
Could I use a hand mixer?
Definitely! Or even a wooden spoon or spatula
😁
Hello. Thank you for the great recipe. Tastes delicious. But any idea why mine may have raised so much and doubled in size 😞
That has never happened to me. Hmmm. Make sure you’re using all purpose flour and not cake or self rising. Maybe skip the baking powder?
@@BakingwithBest101 Thankyou im going to attempt again now with your advice. Thank you so much x
Do you have to do all the chilling and rolling then chilling or can you just straight away roll
If you see this I just wanna ask a few questions:
•Why sometimes when I make sugar cookies the bottom is brownish, Golden , is that good or bad?
•Why does the eggs have to be room temperature?
Hi! The browning on the bottom is from the hot baking pan. As long as it’s not burnt, you’re fine! Some baking pans cause more browning than others. I had to toss some cheap pans as they always burnt my cookies on the bottom. But a bit of browning is fine. :)
As for the eggs, lots of baking recommends all of the ingredients to be the same temperature. Honestly I’ve used eggs straight from the fridge many times, and it’s been fine. So I’m not a stickler to that.
Baking with Best thanks for telling me! I’m gonna make this for Christmas
What are those white pieces you added next to your dough so you wouldn’t over roll the cookie dough?
Leveling sticks! They're the best. "Fat Daddio's LS-SET Fondant Leveling Set" www.amazon.com/Fat-Daddios-LS-SET-Fondant-Leveling/dp/B00CYACWBY
Are these the classic sugar cookies that accommodate for royal icing for decorating or are these soft & chewy? Thanks for any response - Susan Burns
These cookies are meant for decorating. They’re softer than many of the “no need to refrigerate” sugar cookie recipes. But these I always cover with royal icing.
I love this video i mean i enetered a fundraiser for my graduation and i had to bake 150 cookies but it was hard i only didnt do it vy myself but i did it with my grandmother
That’s amazing!!! So glad this video helped 😊
I made this cookie recipe it was so delicious. But I am not sure why they were a little bit hard. Any suggestions
Hi! By nature sugar cookies are a firmer cooker, but I would shorten the baking time. Take the cookies out of the oven when the edges just start to lighten brown. Ever so lightly. Everyone’s oven is different. Some find 6 minutes is long enough, where my oven takes 12 min!
hi @
Baking with Best , i'm gonna try your recipe tomorrow and wondering does it cookies sweet? As I noticed the sugar(300gm) is quite alot. Can I reduce it? TIA
Yup! It’s sweet. Not overly sweet, but that’s just me. 😜. You can definitely reduce it 😊
Hi Tiffany!I just Wanted to Know now many cookies did you Cook?THANKS😍😍😍
+Catherine Elder Hi Catherine! It really depends on the size of your cookie cutter. When I'm making 4 inch cookies it does around 20. Smaller 2.5 inches up to 40 😊
Hi, loved the video, but when I made them it wouldn’t form a dough, so I added more flour until it was a dough. Is that alright? Will the cookies still taste and come out good?
That’s fine! They may be a bit firmer depending how much flour you added.
I do find this recipe has a softer dough. Which is why it needs to be refrigerated before using. An extra step, but yields in a softer sugar sugar cookie.
Hope yours turn out! 😊
Baking with Best yes it did! Thanks for the recipe, it turned out amazing!
wow sugar cookies
Do you have to use baking powder is it necessary? I’m asking as I don’t have baking powder in my country...
Not a big deal. You can skip it! :)
My mom is a baker really good
Moms usually are 😉
Can u refrigerate for more than 24 hours?
Umm can i ask,did we need to put the paper in the oven with the cookie(sugar cookies)??
It’s parchment paper, I never bake sugar cookies without it. Makes sure there is absolutely no sticking! So I recommend using it! ☺️
little question with this recipe how many pieces you get ?? THANKS A LOT
Hi! It entirely depends on the size of your cookie cutter. With smaller 2 to 3 inch cookies, I’ve gotten well over 40. Larger cookies 4 to 5 inches. Around 20ish. ☺️
@@BakingwithBest101 OH OK thanks a lot ♥ i adore youre channel
Awh, thank you!
I tried the recipe followed measurements and my dough came out gooie what did I do wrong ??
Hmm. That’s not right. Was the butter room temp? Maybe try adding more flour. Never had that happen before. So sorry to hear :(
@@BakingwithBest101 i just did it and it came really gooie :(, i"ll add some more flour
This may be a stupid question but what kind of sugar do we use?
No such thing as a stupid question 😊. You use granulated sugar. Also known as white sugar, or “regular” sugar.
How many cookies can be made with this?? Also love the recipe
Hi! It entirely depends on the size of your cookie cutter. With smaller 2 to 3 inch cookies, I’ve gotten well over 40. Larger cookies 4 to 5 inches. Around 20ish.

Can I use a cup to cut the cookies
You can easy anything :)
Can we decorate them after or are they all bumpy
They are smooth! And even if not perfectly smooth, icing will hide any imperfections. I’ve got lots of videos on decorating tips ☺️
Can i keep the dough overnight ?? Or longer
Definitely! Up to a week ☺️
Can this be made gluten free? Thanks!!
+Liane Coffrey Yup! I really like XO Baking Company's all purpose GF flour blend. It measures cup for cup. It tastes great! And the cookies bake great too, they really keep their shape! :) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the quick reply! Excited to try them. Have a nice day!
What kind of sugar do you use? Is it powdered or granulated?
Granulated sugar! ☺️
Can we substitute a 50 g with brown sugar
I have everything expect villila extract and baking powder
You can totally skip those 2 ingredients and still make it! 🤗
do you have a video on how to make the icing?
Yup! ua-cam.com/video/2vgxO-bV1VI/v-deo.html
I didn't use flour at all when I rolled them out, I rolled the dough in between parchment paper. Maybe I had mistakenly measured out more flour than was needed but I'm not sure.
Extra flour mixed into the dough wouldn’t cause the problem that I get. Just when theres excess on top from rolling.
Hmm, are they wrinkled prior to going into the oven? I’d get that with the parchment paper sometimes. Indentations from being rolled in between. I went back to rolling on floured surface.
I did a bit of googling, and some people say this can happen if the oven temp isn’t high enough. So maybe try raising the temp a bit.
They weren't wrinkled prior to baking. I will try raising the temperature a little, thank you!
How many cookies does it make? Have friends coming over to make Christmas cookies. Should I double the recipe for 3 people?
It really depends on how big you cookie cutters are. Smaller cookie cutters equals more cookies! With this recipe I have gotten anywhere from 20-40 cookies depending on the size of the cookie cutter.
Thank you! ❤ Your channel! Will be watching more videos!
Hi 👋, is there such thing as over mixing or over rolling the dough?? My cookies got stuck in the cookie sheet and they were like rocks 😭😭 what did I do wrong?
Oh no! Did you use parchment paper? I always, always line my baking sheets with parchment.
Baking with Best they actually got stuck in the parchment paper. I put parchment paper in the cookie pan and when I tried to transfer them to the cooling rack they were stuck to the paper and after they cooled down they were hard as rocks.
Oh wow! Never had that happen! Hmmm. I really don’t think you can over mix the dough. But over baked is possible. All ovens are different, and pans. I’ve heard some people only needing 6min, where I need a good 13 min usually. So if they became rock hard, I would suggest baking them less time. Take them out when the you see some of the edges of the cookie just start to brown ever so lightly. Just! Hope that helps! 😊
Baking with Best will do thanks a lot!!
It was amazing
Yay!! So glad to hear ☺️☺️
Best recipe I have ever tried, the other ones were not easy
I’ve used this recipe for 10 years! Glad you found it ☺️😁
Hello. Do u know why my dough was sticky?😫i did everything u said on the video
Oh no! Try adding some more flour. Especially when rolling out the cookies. When rolling the cookies I easily add another 1/4 cup of flour.
Mine also... It was sooo sticky even after I chill it for 2hours
How long will they last when baked in an airtight container?
My personal preference is no more than 2 weeks. But I’ve served 4 week old cookies with zero complaints 😉
Thanks 😊 Made these yesterday for a party on Saturday, great recipe, tasty cookies 😁
@@lb9581 Yay!! So happy to hear! :)
Do you have to let it sit can you just bake it right after making the dough
It’s really best to let it chill in the fridge for a good hour. Otherwise the dough is too soft to work with and you’ll have trouble cutting out the shapes without it breaking. But the end result is worth it for a soft cookie!
What tools were you using on each side of the dough when you were rolling it out?
They’re fondant spacers! They’re one of my favourite tools. Then all my dough is the correct thickness. Makes rolling out the cookies a breeze!
www.amazon.com/Fat-Daddios-LS-SET-Fondant-Leveling/dp/B00CYACWBY
Thank you so much! I made these tonight and they turned out amazing! My boys loved them! I can make casseroles all day, but baking is new for me! LOL...
Alexis Krzycki so happy to hear!! 😊
Hi how many days before a party can you make them? Thank you
1-2 weeks easily. Just make sure they stay sealed in an airtight container. :)
I don't have any unsalted butter. What could I do?
Salted butter is fine to use. Just don't extra salt in that case. :)
if there are leftovers what do we do with them
Stacy's World Left over dough? You can refrigerate and roll out more cookies. You could freeze the left over dough. Some people like to eat raw dough. Not me though! 🙂
Can you use salted butter?
Definitely! Just don’t add the extra salt after :)
Are you using granulated sugar?
Yup!
Can u use brown sugar?
Yup!
do you have too put the dough in the fridge??
Yes I would recommend it. Reason being is immediately after you make the dough, it’s quite soft and difficult to work with. The dough will break easily and you’ll have difficulty cutting out shapes. Once your shapes are cut out I put them bake in the fridge (whole cookie sheet) as this prevents the cookies from spreading and keeping their shape :) Hope this clarifies!
What ingredients do u need for the whole think???
Hi! All the ingredients are listed in the description box :)
