We could have an education system on par with Finland except for some asinine reason we choose to dump the money into the military and yell about being better than everyone else like a goddamn child instead.
"And they only have to take ONE standartized test at the end of High School". Correction: We have to take more, if we wish to become university students. The system goes like this: You have to take at least 4 exams that are mandatory and more exams that you can decide. Also you can decide, what exams you take as mandatory, but you only have 1+4 options, the 1 being Finnish as mandatory for all students. Then you have to take 3 of the 4 options as follows: Math (long-term or short-term, depending what you've studied), Swedish, English or a 'real subject' such as history, physics, chemistery, philosophy, another B-stage language, etc. After you've chosen between those, you can take more. Also you have the option to take those exams in Finnish, Swedish, English or Sami. Gotta love the system!

Maybe the Finish teachers treat the students with respect and don’t resort to punishment. The teachers gain respect by not being like jailers which creates a learning environment.
@@wooberdooba4019 they only give you respect because if they don't they'll be punished. The reality is they probably still hate that person and if they can stab in the back they will. Seeing all these comments about how they don't think this type of system would work anywhere because of less homework, and the age at which students start school. it's like a bunch of people looking at a jet airliner and saying "i dunno, I think it's too heavy to get off the ground." while it's flying by. it clearly works, but people are just being stubborn.
I'm a gigantic advocate for education reform, but following Finland should be a guide rather than a set direction as here's why: Finland's agricultural and labour economy collapsed in the 1960's and with it most of the country's trade. In order to grow the Finnish needed it's economy to grow based on research, skills, and creativity (in other words, Education). The Finnish education system was a product of its time that would be extremely dificult if not impossible to replicate anywhere else because it was literally the last resort for the Finnish to not fall into a depression. To follow your metaphor, it will be like taking the wings off of planes because rockets don't need them :\ Most cultures will not accept the Finnish system because of their functional economy and indefferent politicians
Being in school in America, the biggest thing I remember that sucked was just sitting around doing nothing most of the time. Like, lectures are a small portion of your time in the classroom. I went through several library books a week because I would finish my work early and be stuck in the same room until the next thing. There were times that my habit of reading after finishing my work got me in trouble. Know what I was reading? Science books. But for some of my teachers it was blatant disrespect to be learning another topic for fun in their classroom.
Natalie Euley well, that is sorta breaking a classroom rule since you aren't suppose to be doing or learning anything unrelated to your current subject the teacher is teaching in class. But then again, you *did* mention that you do nothing most of the time so I guess that is fair
In india it's more like who can memorise more the person who can memorise everything and spit it out on the exam paper are toppers even if they do not understand what they are writing are toppers
Yeah you should be proud. I always use Finland as a great example when it comes to education. I just wish that we in Sweden could come to the same realization you have; more tests and measuring won't help. Giving the teachers tools and enough time to do their work will.
fnadde42 That's funny because Finns are used to look up the Swedes :D But yeah, in education you took a misstep towards American model. I really can't figure out why.
Teachers in Finland spend fewer hours at school each day and spend less time in classrooms than American teachers. Teachers use the extra time to build curriculums and assess their students. Children spend far more time playing outside, even in the depths of winter. Homework is minimal. Nice!
Americans can actually accomplish all that Finnish accomplish by just homeschooling. The American education system is pretty messed up. If you compare Finland's education system to homeschooling it''s pretty similar.
Yes and there are no exams and tests in Finland schools until the end of the academic year. This means you wouldn't have to study for exams and tests until the end of the academic year. Theres basically no competition, no rankings or punishment in finland schools. But if a student does something naughty they get sent home and let their parents deal with them.
it's not right to say that Finland didn't produce anything. They produced: * Linux - by Linus Torvald * Nokia - i believe they paved the way for our modern user friendly phones * Erwise - the very first browser with a GUI (graphical user interface) which paved the way for our modern browsers now * Heart rate monitor * IRC (Internet Relay Chat) * SMS and many more. To bad people are too arrogant to follow the system as well.their so stuck up on how there must always be the best! And who ranks highest, always compete against each other and disgrading the loser. By the way good for you what country are you from?
My school is kind of copying it but I’m in 6th grade we don’t get that much homework only like 30 minutes a day the teachers are really nice and the curriculum is amazing
From Finland and I agree, but we do have tests quite often, but mainly they are quite creative where you don't just have to memorize useless stuff.
Now try this American Test and you would have a great 2-4 hours doing one half of the test then another 2-4 hours doing the other test.
How many pages is that?? In university here in Finland the longest tests are around 2 hours and have around 10-20 pages depending on how many questions it has or if it is in long essay form.
Roppis here it can be up to 50 pages I think. It has to cover every field including reading, math, math with calculators, science, history, sometimes listening, and a couple other fields of nonsense for specific students.
Roppis It is the same here in The Netherlands

Every country in the world should adapt to Finland's education system in their own language. I like their education system so much that I would immigrante to Finland today if I could just so my kids could get actual education and be kids and have fun and learn and never be left behind!
Just because it works in Finland doesnt mean its gonna work in any other country.
It is an education system that works for kids. It will work for any kid in any country.
Basically homeschooling made a public school. Homeschooling works worldwide, this education system will work worldwide.

We could have an education system on par with Finland except for some asinine reason we choose to dump the money into the military and yell about being better than everyone else like a goddamn child instead.
It doesn't actually take much money for their education.
This is what the education system in all countries should be.
Penelope Waters agreed

Actually if you punish kids they will give you more respect. Not how teachers do it.
@@wooberdooba4019 they only give you respect because if they don't they'll be punished. The reality is they probably still hate that person and if they can stab in the back they will. Punishments are most of the time useless. Kind of like school detentions for not doing your homework. Nothing changes afterwards
Damn I might have to move to finland for my future kids
From New Zealand that is but hmm maybe nahhh NZ was on number 6 soo yeah
Do you live in NZ?
NZ school system is terrible, its more like the education of America, but at least it doesn't give that much homework
That comparison was great😂😂😂
I'm a gigantic advocate for education reform, but following Finland should be a guide rather than a set direction as here's why:
Finland's agricultural and labour economy collapsed in the 1960's and with it most of the country's trade.
As a 7th grader in middle school that lives in America, I wish America would adopt Finland's educational system

* Heart rate monitor
