Thank you thank you!!! I just found out my birdie needs 3 weeks of meds every day. I don’t want to wrap her as other videos suggest so I’m going to try this. You’re amazing.
I definitely need to get back on this. Nice tips and tricks! My bird's would run off the moment there was any form of liquid in the syringe. They know!
I remember watching this video months ago and thinking how this training would be nice, but I never got to it. Now, my bird actually needs medication, and I wish I would have done this training preemptively as Sophie recommended! Luckily, I was able to use the methods in this video and my bird now begs for her medication so she can be rewarded 😂
My snow won’t take her horrible tasting medicine willingly even though her favorite treats have always been involved. I think it has like an oily aftertaste or something that distorts the taste of millets. She won’t eat millets or seeds directly after we medicate her. She won’t take the medicine willingly because the treats afterwards don’t taste the same and the medicine itself tastes horrible. And yes, she was syringe trained before she started the medicine, but the medicine reverted all her syringe training.
Long term medication can be a challenge with syringe training! Sometimes there are other ways of offering mediation which we have done under our vets advice!
Hi Sophie! I am a new cockatiel mom. I have two babies. One is about 5 weeks old, the other about 8 to 10 weeks old. They get along fine outside, but I have been trying to introduce the younger baby to the cage slowly and the older bird isn't having it. How should I approach this? Is the older bird territorial, jealous, or should they have their own space until they are a certain age? Also, maybe a video on weaning might be interesting for me in the future. Lovely channel, and thank you so much!
How big is the cage/do you know the brand and model? Sometimes it can be a space/resources issue! Glad you are enjoying my content 😊 unfortunately I can’t make a weaning video as I haven’t done it before and I don’t recommend getting unweaned birds but I’m sure there are some resources out there that can help you!
Used to syringe train my bird with nut butter in the syringe, when I had to medicate my bird I coated the syringe in nut butter as well and he’d happily participate. do you think it’ll be better trained with watery liquid and treats? Do you train this just when needed or regularly?
You can use nut butter for sure, I prefer to use more watery liquids as that’s what medication will feel like! It’s also less like we are tricking them and more they take what’s in the syringe as they know it’s going to follow up with a top tier treat! It’s good to maintain the behaviour and occasionally ask for it so it doesn’t get forgotten!
I started syringe training a few weeks ago with my cockatiels, thought it would be easier because they are target trained. Every time I replace the target stick with the little syringe, they are totally frightend of it. I can‘t get them to touch it or even being near at it. I don‘t think that they had bad experiences with syringes, they have never been ill until now and live with me since they were six month old. Perhaps I just need more patience ….
Hold the target stick and the syringe in the same hand with he target stick pointing out more than the syringe! If that doesn't help then reinforce for looking at it, then one step closer to it etc! Baby steps!
I started training my budgies a while ago. They were also scared of the syringe. I left it on top of the cage for them to have a look at it for few days and then put a single hulled millet seed in the nozzle. I held it at some distance from them and they wanted the millet so bad that they forgot to be scared of it and took it from there. We slowly progressed to them licking the droplets. Although they still shake their head and spit it because we tried just plain water. I need to think of something they would like. Fussy things, they don’t like any fruit and minimum of veggies so that may be the most difficult part
Hey I was doing a bit of research after I saw kip because he looks so different from other concurs ivd seen. Then I fell down a rabbit hole of arguments about whether there morphs or sub species. So since you haven't steerd me wrong on my birds so far I was just curious on your thoughts
They’re a totally different species! I’ll do a video one day when he’s more comfortable on camera but he has a thicker beak than green cheeks and a shorter, stockier tail too!
Hey! I love your videos!, unfortunately I have a really bad situation where my dad got me a cockatiel for my birthday, cockatiels are my favourite birds, I’ve had many and love them so much. But he got me a 7 month old who’s wings are clipped:( they’re completely botched. He keeps flying into things busting his feathers open and bleeding I keep spending so much money at the vet and I don’t want him to get hurt anymore. I’m waiting for his feathers to grow back so he could fly again, is there anything I can do in the meantime to keep him safe? I wish I knew where my dad was getting him from because they really screwed up his wings. I just want him to be safe and be able to fly again:(
Hey! I’d recommend working on trust building (I have a video on trust) so your bird is more likely to fly to you rather than into walls! Also recommend checking out my video on recall and stationing as you can still build up his flight muscles with structured flight 😊
He's such a good boy!
The bestest boy!
@© Kokkie and the dragons that’s so sweet of you, I’d love that 😊
@© Kokkie and the dragons it says video unavailable!
Great Video I'm So glad that you shared your video 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
❤gorgeous looking bird❤
Thank you 🥰
Such an important topic - you never know when you might need to administer medicine to your bird
Thank you 😊 💙
What a fab video thanks for sharing. Kipling - what a brilliant name 🥰
Thank you so much for watching 😊

Wishing your birdie a speedy recovery and a stress free meds experience! :)
Yay for Kip! Such a handsome little man. ❤
He's a smart cookie :)
Thank you, this was so helpful!
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Awesome video! Such a useful trick.
Thank you :)
'Nice"
Thank you!
Great video, our birds have really taken to touch training after your recommendation and love it. We’ll move onto this!
Glad to hear they’ve picked it up well 😊
I definitely need to get back on this. Nice tips and tricks! My bird's would run off the moment there was any form of liquid in the syringe. They know!
Haha it’s good to go back to basics and treat it like target training first! 😊

There are so many things we can train our birds that it’s hard to know which to prioritise, but we are so glad that she is doing well 😊
Great video

where to buy the syringes, in FL says I need a prescription?? Uggh
You don’t need the needle part, just the syringe and you should be able to get them on Amazon!

@@BirdNerdSophie thank you, I will try that and even reward looking - baby steps for my babies 😆

Thank you for watching! 💙
My budgies hate hemp seeds. So I just give them spray millet. 😂♥️🦜
Haha every bird has a different favourite!
