Old timer here, I've had those webbings snap on before from long exposure to UV light and I've had stainless steel fittings 12mm(1/2") thick snap from stress corrosion. If you are climbing without a backup you need to renew all your gear on a regular basis.
randomly stumbled across this video, simultaneously fascinating and terrifying, generally not afraid of highs and I've climbed plenty of trees before when I was younger, but none remotely this tall and never with a chainsaw on my person. Really cool video.
Kinda glad you explained the issue with the limbs. I had noticed several times lower in the tree they would pop as the saw made contact with the top almost as if the bark was the main support.
Great camerawork, well edited,seeing the chainsaw blade so close to your harness rope sometimes was a bit scary..

@@whynot6563 You won't be able to cut hose ropes with the saw. Sure it is ruined, but it can still hold you many times over even with just a few strands. The suite and jeans are made similarly. They will tangle the blade stopping it, trust me they work :D

@@Diglo1 The climbing line will get disintegrated by the saw. A flip line with steel core might hold, but there is absolutely no guarantee. Neither of the lines will tangle the saw like the clothes does.

We use Tree Runner Brand and I have personally hit this rope with a blade and it did tangle.
They are marketed for this exact job.
However depending on materials used, all climing ropes are very cut resistant.
I was getting nervous around 19:50 and how close it "appeared" the saw tip was getting to your rope!! Awesome video.

It's probably the camera, but it seems like your chainsaw is super close to the rope holding you to the tree. Crazy scary looking!

Man, that saw is almost too hot to make small notches. One little blip, and it's half way through the branch already. The way the limbs were popping off was awsome
With oregan bars you can guarantee a 'hot saw' I have a 12" bar with no oil hole, saw never used a single drop of oil until I drilled an oil hole.. quality that crap is not.
I subbed when you were over at ETW and moved here. I knew you would do great. Your explanation of the Doug Firs popping limbs solved my question to my prior problems. Yeah I have 5- 120’ Doug Firs 75 ft from my house and had an 5” diameter branch come down last years late snow ice in Feb 2023. Paid Arborist to come and clean the damaged widowmakers that remained and some proper long term love. I did have a crew trim them waaay back in 2008 after we purchased the house and so it was time. 50 year old trees are 120 ft tall. I know, counted rings on prior thinning job. Basically planted in the year the house was built in 1962. The area was a former pasture and dairy farm in the 40-50’s and the farmer sold and it became a housing tract.
I used to leave some of those stubs on the way up and finish them on the way down. Much more comfortable than using only spikes on the entire job. Take some of the stress off your feet. Also for removals, my rule was always use a flipline with a steel cable. Use the rope one for trimming and lighter work. It's also easier to throw around a large tree. I was surprised to see you using only a rope flipline on this job.

My brother and I both run Husq 394xp's (94 cc) with 32" bars for our big saws. High rpm and they cut like a bat outta hell. We've tried a lot of others and keep coming back to Husqvarna. I've had my Stihl 066 Mag with a 36" bar fail running the same chain as the Husqs and stepped in with the 394xp to get it done. The Husqs just never let us down. Nice work.

I would be terrified I'd cut my rope too. I was wondering how he changed heights as he worked his way down.
@@jamesrobertson9597 some of his older videos show more climbing detail. He tends to leave that detail out of more recent videos, I think because regular viewers have seen it numerous times.

Totally get the square vs round issues. At some point I want to get a full spool of square and turn it into as many chains as I can get and have them all ready to go. When one gets dull I’ll swap. When I finally run out I’ll spend the afternoon sharpening them all at once.
I was so fascinated just watching you work. I kept worrying about the saw hitting a rope.

That wasn't a big tree, I'm just North in BC and that is a small tree for the area. Big is 5 times that size.

gosh, I see what you mean about the rapid growth of trees in that area! I have never seen growth rings that large! Some of them must have been 1/4" or more! Wow
It’s amazing how fast some trees will grow, given ideal conditions. I’ve seen American elms that grew in low places that puddle frequently, which had some rings easily exceeding 1/2 inch, maybe even 3/4 inch. And although I’ve never cut one down to be able to see the growth, I can say that bald cypress is no slouch either. My mom has one in her back yard, it’s now about 35 years old, and massive. It now draws so much water, that it nearly prevents that area from puddling, when it used to collect 6 inches of water in the spring, and remain wet for nearly 2 months. And that’s in Missouri! 😁

I have noticed limb drop of similar type trees on my customers lawns. I have surmised the trees drop them purposefully to almost provide a self made mulch around the base. Such tree matter on the ground would discourage the growth of competition. Respect your hard work and wish I was there to help.

Imagine 10 inches of wet heavy snow on every spring loaded branch sitting 100 feet above your head. Happens every winter. Way too dangerous. That tree had to go.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, I didn't know douglas firs could get so big! I know them as a Christmas tree, but I didn't know they could get so tall. Kind of amazing.

My Dad planted two Douglas Firs outside out holiday home, way back in about 1980 or so. My mother, in her wisdom, cut the centre out of one of the trees because "that's what you're supposed to do" thinking they should be pruned the same as apple trees. My dad realised what she was doing and stopped her from maiming the second one.
Dad sold the home in 1998 in order to build his retirement house. The Dougs at the time were about 20 feet tall and the damaged tree had grown out one of the side branches to become the new, near vertical trunk. I had the first chance since the sale to go see the place in June of this year and the trees are both at least 140ft tall. They are overhanging both the house and the garage, as well as intruding into the airspace above both neighbours' yards and dominating the entire front yard of the property. The tree that my mum had damaged has crotched and formed two trunks just a dozen feet or so from the base.
I feel sorry for the new owners. It's going to cost them a bundle when they have to take down these nearly 45 year old trees.

my first tree, an oak, 54 inches across the stump after we felled it. I put together a 2 saw, double ended 66 inch bar rig. I asked a friend, retired, with tree service experience for help. He had a active tree service friend who "volunteered" (a 12 pack of his preferred beer). Turned out to be hollow. Well under 1 minute sawing time, could have felled it with a 12 inch bar. Real people, with real world experience, sharing and yes teaching here on "the youtube" are of great value to many.

Looking on line I see that tree was roughly 75 - 80 years old as a guesstimate, so 139.5 cm in diameter is pretty impressive - must be all the water.

The more i work with Stihls, the more i hate them. The more i work with huskies, the more i love them. I dont fan boy for brands, i just want what works and it seems like huskies are the way forward.
Edit: except the 500i, i like it a lot…..however, right now mines in the shop…again. To be fair though i think if it was just me using the saws they would hold up better but i work with adult children if that makes sense. Contract climbing seems like a better gig, i cant stand having to share equipment with people who dont care. You’re a great example of how skill and preparedness can make work such a joy, wish you were on my crew. God bless and stay safe brother

I miss being able to go up to the mountains and cut trees down with my dad. We just didn't have a place that had a wood burning stove to heat up the house but watching this I can still smell the wood getting cut and the chainsaw also.
