I learned about NAS from this channel, so I bought me a Synology DS923+. It’s been a month now, Ive moved all my data to it, I love it! The content on this channel has been super helpful and informative, covering everything about NAS and specifically Synology. I was just watching your video on how to back up data to an external drive, really helpful. Thanks a lot!
I've been thinking about building a NAS for at least 5+ years now. Finally gonna pull the trigger this year and start building mine. Main thing I want is tons of storage, a way to back up the storage, and then a cloud backup of that storage (not sure how a NAS can be backed up to a 3rd party cloud just yet though). Also would want to make the NAS something like a media server so I could access my movies and comics from anywhere with some cool front-ends.
Backblaze will allow you to cloud backup your nas. Alternatively you can buy a second synology and keep it at an off site location and back up the primary synology.
love your content. got a 1520+ many years ago from your recommendations. i've followed all of your advice except the most important one. a backup. lol. i just saw the news that seagate is releasing a 32TB HDD. my 1520+ has a capacity of 35TB. i think that's a sign to stop procrastinating on the most important facet of data storage!
I use my Synology NAS only as file storage, as backup solution (partially) and for the photos. For everything else, I now use a mini pc running Ubuntu server. I just mount my NAS on this server and can access everything with a much better cpu. Good for transcoding in Jellyfin or a good OCR speed in paperless.
Hey can you make a video where you can tell the server 1 to detect changes and send the files to second local/remote server and delete the files in server one. I would like to no such process as I have 2 servers where my main data like movie downloads, projests, videos and is stored on the fastest server and my second one is slow which is only to store data and both are not allowed to talk to each other and on different subnets but on same local network and also no talking to admin which is pfsense router I set up as a firewall
Hi Rex, I've learned a lot from this channel. I have a noob question. Is there a way to have my DS1019+ stay permanently connected to my Mac mini for use as a plex server? The smb protocol seems to randomly disconnect causing my plex server not to see the files and I end up with red trashcans on files that are in the library. I can't figure out how to establish a persistent connection even though the NAS is plugged into the Mac mini via ethernet.
I started using Synology Drive and have found if I try to replicate the same shared folder to two PCs like I would with Dropbox, Synology Drive fails with authentication errors. This is a big failing as I have a work shared folder that I want replicated to each computer so that I have my work available on both. This only happens when I replicate the same folder to both PCs - different folders works ok. I have raised a ticket with Synology and thinking of going back to Dropbox
Simulate ransomware attack and how to recover from it using snapshots... Also how to speed up mass transfers to and from computer.. im currently backing up youtube videos and it took hours to download directly to nas... So instead downloaded the videos locally to mac and it took minutes. Then i try to drag the files to the nas over the network and it again takes hours. I have a network switch and aome ether net cables, ill connect those together and see if it transfers faster. Its a 5 bay nas with 3 8tb samsung ssd by the way... And its still slow... I thought ssd would make it as fast as moving files on mac.. guess not
Hi there, I have a 918+ 4 bay Synology Nas with 4 x 8TB drives running raid 1 and a 5 bay extention with 5 x 4TB drives. I want to update the 4 Bay to 4 x 20TB. Can I add one at a time or do I have to copy all data off the 4 Bay. I don't want to touch the 5 Bay at this stage.
Math and statistics for how much you actually save in the long run would sound more appealing though. Non-tech users supposedly won't care about nas features until they hear the amount of money being involved. Most stuffs mentioned are covered by cloud storage which already built-in on our phones anyway.
Phones aren’t a use case for NAS, they’re used for desktop storage especially for creatives such as photographers or UA-camr’s like SpaceRex for video backup where cloud storage costs would be prohibitive.
@GodfreyMann phones are a case for having a nas. Given the amount of photos & videos they store, a nas is a backup solution for keeping the phone data elsewhere. Cloud options are expensive when you have a huge amount of Gb media.
@@tiffenberg the average person has much less than 128GB storage on their phones, whereas with the high cost of NAS enclosures it makes no sense to buy a NAS with less than 4TB per bay, which would give 14.5TB on RAID5 for 0.128TB of data…huh? Even with 0.256TB or 0.5TB NAS still doesn’t make sense…it’s like using a hammer to crack a nut. Cloud storage is cheap: you can buy 500GB LIFETIME cloud storage from pCloud for €199 or 2TB for €279 during Black Friday. pCloud is reliable: based in Switzerland with 18m customers and has been around since 2014.

Is it recommended to put a NAS and PC on a switch instead of connected direct to my router? My other devices (TV, phones) have been dropping their wifi connection regularly after I added a DS1522+ to my home network. Not sure if there is a data transfer bottleneck or another issue
Edit : after reading the subsequent replies, I'm moving my NAS from my router to my switch. Thanks all. One issue that I found, but don't quite understand, is that after installing an uninteruptible power supply, a number of those dropped connection issues stopped. My main NAS, router, and switch are all plugged into a UPS. One of my other NAS has its own UPS, but the 3rd NAS does not because it's in an out building. The UPS was only about $200. Mine is made by APC but there are others. If you buy one, be sure to buy a smart UPS. I think NASCompares did a review on a number of them a couple of years ago.
Never connect NAS, computers and TVs to your network via WiFi. Instead, connect all devices to your switch and your switch to the router with Ethernet cables. Dedicated switches are also often more powerful than the CPU and switch in your router.
Every home network is based on a switch. It can be a separate device or it can be a part of the internet provider router. Separate devices are usually much more reliable. If your router is serving as switch, firewall, Wireless AP, DHCP server and NAT translation device, and it is doing that if it is the only network equipment in your household. In this case it should have quite a power to do all that reliably. Consider hiring the author of this video for solving your IT issues at home, maybe it is worth doing.
@@DavidM2002 A UPS protects against data loss in the event of a power failure. This allows unsaved data to be written from the RAM to the hard disks before the NAS then shuts down automatically in a controlled manner. The UPS should be connected to your NAS.
Have had Synology for a year + I'm a moderately technical person. Your videos have been a great help, but overall my experience has been nothing but a nightmare. Any issue means like 3 hours of googling + a hundred dead end synology/reddit threads. I need to hire you for like 4,000 hours of consulting and it just doesn't seem like that should be the case. Most of the programs in package center are your basics like photos etc. keep it simple until you're in the mood to learn something new and you will be more accepting of the challenges. You can do this!! 🎉
While we talk about hardware and specifications, I am unclear about the quality and longevity of computer hardware. I don’t mean hard drives but the other parts.
The issue with NAS is when their power supplies fail because years after purchase support won’t exist and there’s often no backwards compatibility with older NAS drives ie you can’t buy a new drive and guarantee they’ll work with drives from an older model. However this isn’t a problem if you build your own NAS because you need simply replace any broken parts…. …yes this is another right to repair problem!
