It differentiates him from Like Kang. Besides, his ego doesn't go to the point of being annoying like Frost, who is a whole ass egomaniac. Kung Lao's defense of Jin, intolerance of disrespect toward his family's name and general humor make him feel more like a person rather than a humble monk stereotype.
