History I found for you; *The Gap Band are a funk, soul and rhythm and blues group from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The band is fronted by the three Wilson brothers: Charlie, Robert, and Ronnie. The Wilson brothers are the sons of a Pentecostal minister and began their music careers singing in their father's church. The Wilson brothers first got together as a group in 1967 and initially called themselves the Greenwood Archer and Pine Street Band, named for North Tulsa's former African American business hub (once known as the Black Wall Street, destroyed in 1920) which ran along Greenwood Avenue bordered by Pine Street to the North and Archer Street to the South. The Gap Band started out performing in various venues all over their native Tulsa and recorded an unsuccessful debut album in 1974. The Gap Band hit their stride in the late 70's with such songs as "I'm in Love" and "Shake" (the latter was a Top five R&B radio hit). They scored a huge smash in 1979 with the groundbreaking single "I Don't Believe You Wanna Get Up and Dance (Oops Upside Your Head)." The Gap Band continued their winning streak into the 80's with such hit songs as "Steppin' Out," "Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)," "Humpin'," "Yearning for Your Love," "Party Train," "Early in the Morning," "I Found My Baby," "Outstanding," and the especially funky "You Dropped a Bomb on Me."*
Oh good Lord THANK YOU for saying all that I knew Charlie was a Christian now I know he grew up one so happy to hear that so thank you for that info. :D
We used to call this song “the never ending song” at the clubs in the 80’s. They would play the remix that went on for about 20 minutes. We got so tired we had to walk of the dance floor!! 😂😂😂 A classic though! Love them! ❤️❤️
I can't tell you how many times my future hubby and I danced to these guys in the early '80s. We would close out Pogo's in Wichita every Monday (nickel pitcher night), Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Sigh..those were the days
Crazy how DJs will do that sometimes! I remember a wedding DJ playing the full extended dub mix of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love", cleared the floor before the full 9 minutes was up 😂😂😂
Now maybe a few of the younger kids who know what we mean when we saying we Dropped a Bomb on you or we're going to drop some bombs or you know this or that what's got the bomb in there it was probably manufactured at the Gap Band hello brother alright alright now
The GAP Band's "Early in the Morning" and "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones are my favorite wake up songs! Uncle Charlie Wilson is still going strong with that smooth, sexy voice!
They were three brothers, Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson. They named themselves GAP after three streets in the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Greenwood, Archer, and Pine. They moved to LA and got a record deal. Charlie is a bomb. He's a big name in R&B.
Great to see you enjoy these guys so much. Try "Yearning For Your Love" by them. And check out "Uncle Charlie", first name Charlie last name Wilson, "Blessed" and "There Goes My Baby" I think you'll love all those songs. Keep them coming, you two. Peace
My mom loved this song and loved dancing to it. She had both legs amputated in 2016 and only lived 3 more weeks after that. In my mind I'm transported back to the 1980's dancing with her to this song. It was one of life's greatest pleasures for her. It brought the memories flooding back and for that I thank you. Maybe react to Burn Rubber by the Gap Band next time? Love you guys. ❤❤
It was only a matter of time before your funk journey led you to this song! Believe it or not, this band put out TWENTY albums between 1967 and 2010, and this is arguably their most famous song. You also have to check out "Outstanding", "Party Train", and "Burn Rubber On Me". This song's use of the synthesizer (doing the whistle and bomb sounds) was one of the most unique sound effects at the time to be incorporated into a song. And GAP stands for Greenwood Archer Pine. They consisted of three brothers - Charlie (lead singer), Ronnie, and Robert Wilson. Only Charlie is still around, but he's still going. In fact, he joined Bruno Mars in 2018 on Bruno's 24K Magic tour!
These guys walked into our rehearsal room back in the 80’s. They said we are rehearsing in the next room, and we’ve been listening to you through the wall, you guys sound incredible and we don’t even like hard rock, is it cool If we hang out for a couple songs? Of course we said “ He’ll yes “. Super nice guys. 👍
Loved, loved, loved, the Gap Band. So much fun in their live performances. Got everyone out of their seats. I loved dancing to this at high school dances . You couldn't sit during their songs. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
Great reaction guys! Lead singer Charlie Wilson is still performing and recording. Lately he has collaborated with Bruno Mars. In 2020 he released a song called "Forever Valentine". Great song. In the mid 2000's he had a hit with " Charlie, last name Wilson". He's an absolute legend and still going strong. Tulsa's Own!
I grew up with the GAP band on my life's soundtrack. The front man is Charlie Wilson. Unfortunately, his brothers are deceased. "Uncle Charlie" is still doing his thing. As a side note, I went to high school with his manager.
"Early In The Morning" 🔥🔥🔥🔥 "Oops! Upside Your Head"; "Outstanding"; ..."Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)"; "Beep-A-Freak" ...all GAP Band classics! 🤘🤘
I used to use my brother’s record player, his giant headphones, and listen to the Gap Band and Earth, Wind & Fire. I’d sit in a big chair and listen with my eyes closed. Fond memory. Did it over and over. Loved it.
One of my top 2 fave songs of the 80s, and I'm a hair metal rock girl. Can't sit still for sure. I will listen to it everytime it comes on on the radio. My other top song that I can't turn off if it comes on is "One Thing Leads to Another" by The Fixx. They had a couple hits, from the early/mid 80s British invasion. Think Duran Duran.
This is one of those songs they played at the club for YEARS!! Another one, close to last call, was always Clarence Carter's "Strokin" - which is a lot of fun.
IIRC this is the second song I bought from the iTunes Music Store. Everyone at work wanted a copy, even the straight-laced military Morman guy. He said that he and his wife couldn’t stop dancing to this for three days.
I haven't even watched your reaction yet but I know you like it. This song plus Burn Rubber On Me and Party Train and this is what I was jamming to in college. Such good memories.
GAP = Greenwood, Archer & Pine ( Black Wall Street ) downtown Tulsa. Booker T grads! As am I ( class of 1985 ). These guys graduated about 10 years earlier ( or more ).
This is one of "those" songs that when you are driving down the highway by yourself, you roll down the windows (summer time of course), turn up the volume and rock out. Baby Likes To Rock It (Like A Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train) by The Tractors is a another good one to rock out to while driving down the highway.
"The Other Wilson brothers" of Music Charlie, Ronnie & Robert are the members of The GAP Band. That is "uncle Charlie" on the lead vocal. [In case you don't know (which, apparently, you do not!): The Beach Boys were, also, founded by a set of Wilson brothers (to my experience: the most famous ones in music!): Brian [vocals, bass, piano, main composer & arranger], Dennis [drums and vocals -unfairly dismissed & underrated!] and Carl [guitars & vocals] as was the Brooklyn band: MANDRILL! I think they got started at 1976, but they were least three consecutive albums in 1979, Gap Band I, Gap Band II, Gap Band III. They had so much material, that they couldn’t fit it all in one album so they made three. Gap Band IV in 1982 with check number one “Early In The Morning”with the rooster crowing.
The Wilson brothers were hired as a backup band by none other than Oklahoma's own Leon Russell who put them on the map so to speak. Great sound and a great band.
It makes me smile to see so many others on here comment about hearing this song at the skating rink. It was definitely played at the one I skated at every weekend during the 80's. Great "gotta move" song.
OMG...the memories!!! I would love to know the total number of hours I danced in high heels, fishnet stockings and my Grandfather's dress shirt; belted, sleeves rolled up and collar turned up! Up on the speakers at the Limelight in ATL dancing the night away to THIS song. Cannons spewing 🎊. The absolute 💯 best of times. Thanks for making me think about my younger self. Haven't seen her in 30ish years. I still love her though! Another along the same line Strokin'by Clarence Carter. We all loved to hear that one come on as well!
This is my alarm every morning, How can this song not make you want to jump up and smile and be ready to own the day. I have it to wake up my 11 year old son too. And Charlie Wilson does have one of the best voices. You should listen to some smooth I think early 2000 Charlie Wilson music.
I so love this song! I remember attending a class reunion with a date. We danced to this song. We later got married and are still happily married today.
If not for the Gap Band my house would be a disaster. When I don't want to clean the house, I throw on the Gap Band and that sucker is clean in 90 minutes. lol
The names of the streets was Greenwood, Archer and Pine. Also, the title of this song is a reference to the bomb that was dropped on the Tulsa in the Black Wall Street massacre. It is the only time in American history that America dropped a bomb on its own citizens on its own land.

Yearning for your Love is another great song by The Gap band more of a slow paced song. Also the lead singer Charlie Wilson had some new music in the early 2000s that is worth a listen Charlie last name Wilson and magic are two of the more popular songs from that album that I can remember
Lol....Freakazoid!! Loved that song too! Dancing at the bar, in my twenties. I'm an 80's child. So many Good songs back then.....the 60's and 70's were my parents and older brothers music. I like that stuff too. But, I graduated in 1985, so anything in the 80's and early 90's. 😁👍
I had a old school stereo when this song came out.with the station indicator that lit up but had a cockroach living inside I thought it was dead until this song came on the radio and as the whistling sound of the bomb dropping came its antenna would move. Any other song zero reaction. Damn Biloxi Mississippi roaches. Lol
I've been watching you guys for almost a year now... and it just hit me.... I don't think you've done Hot Chocolate, 'You Sexy Thing'! It's such a fun song!
I remember dancing to GAP band. They weren't named for cities, but streets in Tulsa (the P was for Pine). The Wilson brothers got a break by working with Leon Russell. Later Steve? Wilson sorked with Stevie Wonder.
Early in the morning, Oops up side your head, Outstanding, Yearning for your love All great gap band songs. Charlie has such a unique voice. He was on the show the masked singer and he was the only one i ever guessed correctly!!!😂
This was HUGE in roller rinks in 1982-83 or so. Even now, if you played it back to back 4-5 times, skates would appear on your feet and a disco ball would drop from the ceiling. Good times!
Man, I was born in 71 and I was so lucky listening to jams like this hearing music from my older siblings and then getting to dance to my style of 80s artists. So blessed with music to help me get through life!
? Maybe if you haven't maybe you should listen to Baby Love Baby Love by Mother's Finest people in the daytime Mia mf'er I say yes I know and my Mother's Finest Mother's Finest just what I you be indeed
In case you didn't know...the one singing lead vocals is Charlie Wilson, as in UNCLE CHARLIE, the solo RnB singer who's still singing, making hits, and touring to this day. Check out "There Goes My Baby," "First Name Charlie, Last Name Wilson," and also "You Are"
Gap band is one of my absolute favorites! My brother and I both have white hair now but if we’re riding together we’re still blasting their music or Isley Brothers. We get some strange looks but we don’t care!😂
Ok so fun story. I moved to Okmulgee, OK from California when I was 18 and I made my first best friend when I started working at McDonald’s. Anyway, one day we were driving around in my car and the CD I had playin was Gap Band…. We grew up POOR, and many times we didn’t have a TV or cable. But we always had music. And my mom has AMAZING taste in artists and songs. And because of this I tend to only listen to old school music, Gap Band being one of my favorites since I was 5. So my mom actually got me that CD for a bday present. So, that day with my friend in the car and this very song playing.. she looks at me and smiles and asks “you like this band?” And ofc I said no, I LOVE this band. Then she says “I’m related to them. They’re my mommas cousins”……. I was like “yea… OK sure” 😂 So she has me talk to her mom and sure enough, they are most def fam. A few years later I got to meet Charlie. It was awesome and I was absolutely star struck and awkward cuz I’ve never met anyone famous let alone a member of a band I loved since the age of 5. He was very kind and down to earth and gracious. Def one of those memories/stories I’ll always keep with me. I live in Tulsa, OK now and EVERYTIME i see or drive on Archer, Pine or Greenwood I not only tell whoever is with me about the Gap Band but also this story.
Man we would straight up lose our shit when this played at the skating rink back in the day.

I was always on the dance floor when this song hit! “Early In the Morning” and “Humpin’” is great also.
“Freakazoid” by Midnight Star is fun, too.
Love Midnight Star i requested No Parking on the dancefloor.
@@fhat6924 that’s a great one too!
Yarbrough and peoples - Don’t stop the music! A must listen 🎧
It’s Greenwood, Archer,, and Pine . 918! Listen to “Burn Rubber” by the Gap Band..so funky and cool
Next one, Outstanding! Great Gap Band song
Lol
This was the roller skating youth soundtrack of my life!!!
I'm back in the 80's at the skating rink. This song played and everyone rolled to the rink.
This just grooves
I've been watching you guys for almost a year now... and it just hit me.... I don't think you've done Hot Chocolate, 'You Sexy Thing'! It's such a fun song!
YESSSSSSSSS - that or "Everyone's A Winner!"
I remember dancing to GAP band. They weren't named for cities, but streets in Tulsa (the P was for Pine).
The Wilson brothers got a break by working with Leon Russell. Later Steve? Wilson sorked with Stevie Wonder.
OMG………..love, love, LOVE this song from WAY back when!!!!!
I can't tell you how many times I danced to this song in the 80s.
It can't be overstated how big this song was! And the Gap Band, in general. They had song after song after song, all big hits.
Early in the morning,
Oops up side your head,
Outstanding,
Yearning for your love
All great gap band songs.
Parliament, Zap and Roger! Omg.. thebestdance music!!
I love their song Outstanding. check that out. Grew up in Arkansas and we did a cheerleading routine to this song. Love it.
? Maybe if you haven't maybe you should listen to Baby Love Baby Love by Mother's Finest people in the daytime Mia mf'er I say yes I know and my Mother's Finest Mother's Finest just what I you be indeed
Oh this was Happy Hour at the classy hotel music. Oh yes.
THIS WAS 1 OF MANY PLAYED IN THE DANCE CLUBS EARLY 80S. PARTY TRAIN IS AWESOME AS WELL.
They really can put on a show. Had a blast at an outdoor concert. Everybody was dancing with everybody... so much fun.
In case you didn't know...the one singing lead vocals is Charlie Wilson, as in UNCLE CHARLIE, the solo RnB singer who's still singing, making hits, and touring to this day.
Check out "There Goes My Baby," "First Name Charlie, Last Name Wilson," and also "You Are"
You could almost never get a spot on the dance floor when this song started playing. I love watching your reaction to these incredible songs!
“Yearning For Your Love” is my favorite from the Gap Band. You’ll love the laid back groove of this song. It’s a Quiet Storm essential.
Early ‘80s high school dance staple. Love it.
Oh how I LOVE so much. This was my favorite song song from the GAP BAND!
Classic ! ("Early in the Morning" is a masterpiece)
Gap band is one of my absolute favorites! My brother and I both have white hair now but if we’re riding together we’re still blasting their music or Isley Brothers. We get some strange looks but we don’t care!😂
I've had this on my MP3 player for about as far back as I can remember, and it never gets old.
Imagine growing up in 70s with all that amazing classic rock, then the 80s comes along with new wave, synth pop and dance pop. We had the best music.
I was like “yea… OK sure” 😂
So she has me talk to her mom and sure enough, they are most def fam.
My favourite Gap Band song is Burn Rubber On Me.
