    Thank you very much. I just got the Merlin today and wanted to go beyond randomly strumming lol

    Great lesson. I just got one of these as a birthday present, and this is going to be the first song I learn. Thanks so much for posting this video!

    Great job. Seagull have to be one of the most underrated guitar manufactures . Probably some of the best price point guitars out there and all made here in Canada from mostly locally sourced woods. They seem to have a greater appreciation outside of Canada it seems.
    Was contemplating picking up a S6 as they play so well but may grab a Merin for the fun of it after seeing this.

    I wish you would just tab from 1:19 - 1:30 for me as I can play the rest of it except that for some reason. Are you perhaps hitting the A string twice before you start to finger the D string?

    Excellent teaching. Would love to know your opinion of the G model. It doesn’t seem as clear and bright as the D model.

      I've only played one in stores and yeah I find it doesn't project as much as the D model. This one when played with a pick is louder than a mandolin and cuts through pretty well. It's louder than some guitars, which kinda surprised me because of how small it is, but I think part of that is it's tone that cuts through the mix like I was saying. Sometimes I'll use different tunings, same intervals but lower or higher. I've been able to go down to Bb, though it gets kinda iffy intonation wise, and gone up to E. I've been meaning to try getting some lighter strings and trying to tune up to high G tuning. I also plan on getting more frets added to make it chromatic eventually. I think that would give it the most versatility

    Thank you so much for breaking this down! I ran across your other excellent Whiskey before Breakfast video and played it back a bunch of times to try to learn this. My biggest problem is hitting the strings cleanly. Are you using a pick? I seem to have way more control with my fingernail, but I have been practicing so much that I have worn my nail down to nothing. If you are using a pick, do you recommend a certain hardness?

    • @TomMilleyMusic
      @TomMilleyMusic  6 років тому +1

      I do use a pick. I'd recommend a light to medium pick, nothing too fancy. This allows you to strum all the strings at once a little easier. On guitar and mandolin I tend to use fairly heavy picks, 3mm thick. On Merlin I tend to go for like 50/75mm or so. I was using 50mm here. The thick picks sound good on it too, and make it much louder, but like I said it's a little easier to do the strum style of playing I'm doing in this song with the lighter pick. Hope that helps, thanks for watching :)

    What strings and is it tuned to gdg?

    • @TomMilleyMusic
      @TomMilleyMusic  6 років тому

      Whatever came with it, I think d'addario, and it's tuned to DAD. You can still play it in GDG though, it will just sound lower.
