you e saved me a job I was gonna do this very thing this year. I've also used 50 ltr bags of compost and put 4 plants in, although it does get a bit cramped if you don't zig zag them
Cheers John it would be great if there’s no difference and we can all save a few quid. I think I’m my first summer of videos I had my peppers in compost bags and they did great!
Nice! I don't think we have that. I mean, some folks cut open container mix bags and do the same thing adding ferts, but our grow bags are just a form of container with some being cheap plastic and others more expensive material with handles...whatever they're made of. Video wasn't what I was expecting. Nice.
I did wonder if growbags were a thing elsewhere, I’d have to look into the history of them but I suspect they may have come from the push to grow food at home during the war maybe. I’ve seen a few reusable ones for filling which are better. They’re just expensive for poor quality compost, if had electricity there I’d run it entirely on hydroponics.
Great experiment Barry and interesting to get your opinion on the different composts too, I found that the compost this year has lots of fungus gnats in them too.
I grow 90% of my tomatoes outside and rarely feed them as I top up in winter with mushroom manure. I don’t really get the point of grow bags 😂 but as always a fun experiment, Ali 🌥️🇨🇦
I use them as a temporary thing when I need new beds. I have the ground covered this year with the bags on top to kill the grass underneath ready for digging out next year. They’re more used here as a single use garden bed because a lot of UK gardens are quite small and didn’t have good enough weather, they even sell plastic growbag greenhouses enough to fit one bag! Cheers Ali!
oh my goodness, that watering at the end though! XD haha! I think I would still put a mulch around them, just to help prevent the compost splashing up, you never know. It will definitely be interesting to see which does best, or if perhaps there might not be any real difference. I've been putting mine into morrisons plant buckets this year (8 for 99p), I've been mixing some Manor Farm compost (I believe made by Westland, I got for £4.90 for 60L) with some of our own composted stuff - to make it go a bit further - which does have still a lot of sticks in it but I've taken out the big ones and I've also added a bit of enriched top soil, some perlite and some vermiculite, and a little slow release granules. Hopefully they'll do ok in it, fingers crossed. I'm doing this year: Sungold Honey Delight Big Mama Big Pink Roma Solito F1 Cherry Falls Suncherry Premium F1 Romello F1 Consuelo Honeycomb (Bought) Black Cherry (Bought) Modus Mini Plum (Bought) Neat n' Sweet (Bought) Sun Baby (Bought) Golden Sunrise (Bought)
Good luck with all of those, you’ll definitely have a big harvest from all of them! I don’t mind the sticks as much when it’s for digging in, they give something for the mycorrhizae to munch on and act as a slow release fertiliser, but they don’t have time for that in grow bags over one summer. I think it’s just we’ve been spoiled with peat mixes for so long!
I got some of the Grandiol last year. It had lumps of wood as thick as my finger, stones, plastic and I even found some glass! Disgusting stuff. Interested to see the results.
This'll be interesting to see!
Thanks Cath! I’m looking forward to seeing what happens!

Thanks Sue! I assume it’s going to take some time to get better ‘recipes’ into development and produced without peat. I hope so anyway!

@@GrowIt Yeah, you're right. Hopefully the peat free composts will be further improved over time when we legally go fully on to them.

I think they must be cutting the process short to cut cost or even adding a larger amount of wood. They always seem to be really low on nutrients too.
