A Pair of Trains in Auburn, WA, 1-18-2016

  • For my first video of the year, I'm trackside in Auburn, WA - about 20 miles south of Seattle. I'm just north of Auburn Station near the W Main St crossing.
    The Auburn North signal just north of me is showing Diverging Clear on Main 2 so a train is due soon.
    It turned out to be an oil train led by BNSF 8215 (ES44C4). She's just coming out of Auburn Yard and is under high throttle getting up to track speed. She's loaded with North Dakota crude headed to a refinery north of Seattle.
    After waiting around for 30 minutes or so, the Main 1 signal showed Approach Medium so I setup again to see what was coming.
    This time it was a grain train led by BNSF 6285 (ES44AC). She would be headed for the Louis Dreyfus grain terminal in Seattle. She's definitely fully loaded as I could feel the ground shaking as she passed.
    Oil train:
    8215 / 5495 / 4463 / 6218

    6285 / 4389 / 5314 / 4539

    Another fine video. Hope that nice looking mural can last "un-tagged" for a month or so.

      +Dejoh Denny It's been there for years, if I remember correctly. The punk ass morons that tag stuff are mostly up in Seattle so this one gets left alone.

      +Yard Limit It is. You can shoot from the ground by the crossing, from the station platforms, from the pedestrian overpass for high angle shots. Good choices.

    do the DPU units go back too the yard or pick up another train coming back ?

      Depends on the type pf a train. In this case, oil facility has an unloading loop, so when its empty, itll go back with the same head units.

      +David Schieler Depends on the situation where the train ends.
      If a train trip ends at a yard, the DPU and the lead locos are pulled off the train, get fueled and go back on the ready track where they could end up on the front or rear of a train. This would happen with the grain train, the grain terminal is adjacent to Balmer Yard.
      If the train trips ends up at an industry with an unloading loop, then the locos stay with the train as it is loaded/unloaded. If the industry doesn't have a loop track, the locos are taken off the train, cars are loaded/unloaded and the locos put back on the train. Maybe in the same position, maybe not.

    I notice the patched paint on Dash 9s 4463 & 5814.Result of turbo fires? Both units have been like this since 05.

    Just another fine video from you my friend :) speaking about this region...
    can you give some informations about the Stevens Pass area operations, if you can?
    How many trains run on average per day on the scenic sub?...and this oil and grain trains go up Stevens Pass on the return trips,i mean unloaded? I know about some robert banks
    coal empties go through Stevens Pass but i'm not sure about oils and grainers...thank you from any informations on this!

      +RICMOTA Not sure of the exact count that use Stevens, I'd guess 12-15 per day on average.
      The stack trains to and from Chicago use Stevens, that is a couple per day each way. There is a regular train from Everett to Spokane and back (EVESPO & SPOEVE). The Amtrak Empire builder does one trip each way per day.
      I think the empty coal trains go back east via Stevens as I don't see them in the Seattle area very much. I see some empty oil trains and grainers down south headed for Stampede. Wouldn't be surprised if eastbound traffic is split between Stevens and Stampede. Stampede is used only for eastbound traffic so it gets mostly empty grainers, oil trains and manifest freights. Stampede tunnel is too short for double stack well cars so no stack trains use that line.

      +SeattleRailFan Hi, I can expand on your info since I live near Steven's Pass. The route is maxed out at about 27 trains per day since it takes 45 minutes or so to clear the tunnel with the big fans at the east portal after a train passes. It's a rail bottleneck from WSDOT's point of view, not so much now with intermodal traffic down, but when demand is high it becomes so. I'm seeing EB; empty energy (coal and oil) trains, intermodal both domestic and non-domestic, the occasional empty grain, very short empty Boeing, Amtrak, and a couple of manifest trains each day. WB; Amtrak, both types of intermodal, auto trains and rarely Boeing only trains. The Boeing cars are usually included at the lead end of intermodal or auto trains, but occasionally a very short Boeing only train will go by with between 3 and 6 Boeing 737 fuselages of different length/model. It's my understanding some empty grainers are using Stampede tunnel, EB only. Didn't know about oil and manifest trains using this route. Interesting. Stampede tunnel has a very low capacity due to single track and no CTC, last I knew. Thanks SRF, I really like your videos, also!

    Why do you refer to these mechanical objects as She,? why not He as they are obviously more masculine. I object most strongly to being associated with these noisy un female like machines. I'm not accusing you of sexism, but the term She to describe what are usually unclean smelly objects annoys me.

      +Tasha Jones Men commonly refers to mechanical objects as "she" because they are objects of great beauty, requiring tender care and careful attention. Failure to properly care for them can lead to disaster. When working as intended they are a joy to us and yet can be mysterious, obstinate and frustrating to us - just like the women in our lives. It is a term of affection, not derision.
