  • We limp into Antigua and try to get back on our feet. Did we learn anything from our sail? The boat needs some love - halyards, blocks and even some electrical modifications. But the famous Barbeque at Shirley Heights goes a long way to making it all worth while. Join us as we explore Antigua!

Happy spouse happy house is how I always put it. Both sides of a relationship should always work together and care about each others happiness.

Oh man, it was like watching conversations in our first year of boat ownership. We've come to a point where we sail at about 80%, in general. We go into the night with a reef (or two, depending on the forecast) and then just use the head sail to increase/decrease power. We also don't mind cracking off a few degrees to make the motion of the boat a little more civilized. It used to frustrate Tim that he had to "acquiesce" to my level of comfort, but the more miles we've done, the more he's come around to not beating ourselves and the boat up.

There are too many “family portrait” videos out there. Always happy, organized and agreeable. I appreciate the honesty of good days and bad days. There are no Ozzie and Harriet marriages. Funny part, going from “second guessing” to “where’s the other end”.
Oh, and if you can, always use two lines when aloft.

So good!!! Great music. Would like your video's to be 30 minutes. But I know that's a lot of editing. Looking forward to more.

Working on it! Honestly we’re still figuring out the rhythm of cruising + parenting + filming + editing. It’s all rewarding, though!

A boat has a family, crew and a captain and a good captain need to make sure that all crew are happy feel safe and that the boat runs in a way that all crew feel capable, happy and safe. It’s not a race it’s for pleasure I assume so personally I would listen to the wife if she wants to sail a little slower and not push the boat to hard. A happy boat is a safe boat and her points all sound very sensible. If you wife starts to hate the boat your life will be on land in the end. If she is happy sailing adventures will be great for everybody. Stress makes people unhappy !!!

Indeed! We’re not going anywhere fast anyway, in the grand scheme of things. Good advice to maximize crew happiness!

Never forget that the secret to a happy marriage (and crew) is to always answer “Yes, dear!” 😊

Almost right. Husband to wife; “Yes, dear.”. Wife to husband; “You are one sexy guy, do you want to snuggle? (Kept PG). Both have the same outcome, resulting in a happy marriage.

    Always reef at night.

    Hi Guys.
I like to say that I know Less than Jon Snow, about anything. And I try to never give advice, just suggestions.
Point 1. Why not have a Reefing Schedule with set parameters until You are both more proficient with the Boat, the way it handles different situations, and how each of You reacts to those conditions which make You consider reefing. After You are both comfortable with the above and each others ability to handle all situations then You can introduce variable reefing choices.
Point 2. " Everybody can sleep comfortably at night ". I hope that the person On Watch Duties is Not sleeping comfortably at Night. I have watched a new Cat crew / family who All sleep at night while the Cat sailed itself across the Gulf Stream. I hope I misheard what was said.
Good Luck to You both and please give each other the space to take responsibility for duties which each is best equipped to handle. On Sailing Curiosity it is the wife who does All of the Docking / Undocking and the majority of the passage steering. In their case Jason has responsibility for other tasks.
    Safe Travels.
    David. Down Under.

Hey David - thanks for the comment and suggestions! We absolutely keep watch. The sleeping comment was for the other three of us. With just two of us, it’s probably a pretty good idea for both of us to be able to do most tasks, which is something we’re still working on. I suspect Jason could do most everything in a pinch, but they’ve been on the boat a lot longer than we have. And yup, we’re going to be much more formulaic wrt reefing.

First I have to say that I love watching your videos. But I need to say that if your first mate, Megan, is uncomfortable without a reef in the sails at night it might be a very short sailing career.

Fair enough! Our plan is for that to be standard practice going forward. Thanks for watching!
