Very beautiful culture. I thought the Gersha gesture was very unique. I have tried ethiopian food before and it was a great experience. Thank you for sharing. We need to share more of other countries cultures so we can learn their values. In my nigerian culture,we eat with our hands too :)
gursha has a positive purpose and meaning that you would do it to a person whom you feel so close enough to have a responsibility for his well being, nourishment and happiness. so if somebody presents you a gursha don't hesitate to receive it because it has a hell lots of good thoughts and caring behind it. and if you refuse it, that means you crash all of those good thoughts behind it.......... no pressure!!!
I never had it at a restaurant. Although i know there were several in ottawa canada. But some friends made it for me and its sooo good. I live middle eastern, african and indian cooking. Cant wait to learn how to make enjera and boro wat!!!
Beautiful. A couple of Do's and Don'ts about the subtleties of Ethiopian culinary culture - - you DO wash your hands with soap and water (and not wipe them down with napkins as in this video). A traditional host will bring you water and soap and pour you some water in a basin so you may wash your hands without walking too far away to find water. It is polite to stand up when someone is pouring water for you to wash your hands. - when eating communally, you DO NOT scoop your food from in front of other people. It is considered unpolished and lacking in finesse. When you have finished what's in front of you your host or anyone in your group who is attentive offers to scoop more in front of you from a serving dish nearby. Or you can do that yourself. Sometimes, people in your group may grab a piece of injera and scoop wot from sections that no one can reach and will place them where the food is running out. - you DO NOT lick your fingers when eating Ethiopian food communally. If you do it accidentally, DO NOT put your fingers back into the communal tray. Another faux pas. Don't let the fact that they eat communally fool you. Ethiopians are very picky about their food and about the company with whom they enjoy it. - you DO NOT let the sauce touch above your first knuckle (at the the tips of your fingers). You make sure of that by cutting a small enough piece of injera yet large enough to scoop a small amount of sauce.
Wow I enjoyed Eritrean National Food for three years, I love it, it's simply amazing! I really missing it. Nice people... The platter itself amazing, great in taste, and one of the best diet as well.
Shout out to Addis አዲስአባ yes I knew very well about it. Can you send the best of the best Amharic / Tigrinia Music songs. If it's yes then please add my number to your whatsapp 00919346691742
Looks like southindia dish..☺ for most of all the spices comes from india it makes sense. In southindia they call it dosa. And Served with different currys and coconut cutneys.
+Kalki Ar dosa is not the same as Injera. They might look similar but they are completely different. They are prepared differently, and Injera is made of teff which is a grain native to the Ethiopian highlands. Ethiopian food use a common spice blend called "berbere" many of the spices come from India (like the majority of the world's spices), but there are spices like korarima, which originate from Ethiopia.
I'm from ethiopia and the food there tastes way better than you imagined it would be my favorite is the eggs did you ethiopia had donuts to and plus that is not cooked fish the is chicken legs
...There is an order on how to eat..when eating all together..and in front of each person the different wat are served and each person should take his/her are wets and not others persons portions...that was the education and kind of ''etiquette'' or ''galateo'' when eating enjeron aunque plate or ''messob''
Ethiopian cuisine is not suited to fork. It predates the fork. Spaghetti is only 600 years old. It must always be eaten with fork. Anyways, Ethiopian table manner prohibits licking fingers and getting into the communal pot. Also, it is considered childish dipping one's fingers beyond the first line of knuckles. Your fingers should not get into your mouth. Only children eat that way.
for me licking your finger is good for your health cause hands (especially the right hand) has enzymes that is also found in our saliva. In simpler words, the digestion process actually begins in our fingers as they break down the food that we eat. A simple showcase of this phenomenon is to dip our hands in a bow of water. Then put inside some fresh vegetables. Compare the vegetables in this bowl and another one that has been put in fresh water. You’ll notice that the vegetables in the water dipped with your hands wilts faster than the other one
I apologize for this in advance but this is how I really feel. The white woman, Kettle, was very annoying. Just eat the food and stop talking so much. Her whiteness was on full display with her comments.

So much racists comments. No, eating with your hands doesn't make you a savage and that white lady doesn't deserve any of the hate I've seen.
I know this show, it's called "Ignorant ass rich white people eating new and exciting foods". I have an entire season on DVD.
