    I really really like this movie. I like that the directors seemed to know that trying to explain time travel BS would just lead to nowhere and just go ahead with the plot of the movie. IMO, one way or another, no matter how you try to explain time travel, it'll eventually become a paradox unless you insert multi-verse theory.

    • @ducknorris233
      @ducknorris233 3 роки тому +9

      My theory wouldn’t make for a good movie but I think the reality of time travel is that it’s only possible in one direction. Let’s say you are making building something and need the square root of 36. You would get 6 right? Well you would get 6 and -6 but you throw out the negative number because it has no practical use. All the paradoxes of time travel would be squashed. I also think time travel forward would look more like stasis, as you skip through time (relative to you) others could see you in that same space through out time. Stasis also seems like something easier to invent than time travel. I would be interested in hearing anyone else’s theories.

    I like to think the rain maker was closing all the loops in the future is because he knows a looper killed his mom and this is his way of getting revenge. Since Joe killed himself he has no reason to close all the loops and the story ends on a bitter but happy ending.

      @Ian Robertson It's possible that accumulating a massive amount of electricity and then releasing it into a condensed area can open a portal to another dimension, pretty sure that's why the delorean in back to the future needed a nuclear reaction from plutonium or a lightning bolt to operate. You would also need to have something that can store the same amount of electricity in the dimension you want to travel to so that it can complete the circuit. I don't think being able to time travel into any year you want makes sense

    I always thought of this movie as a reverse superhero origin story. Imagine in the canon universe of a comic there's an established supervillain, then using "comic logic" there's a time travel event that changes the villians past making him into a hero and that becomes the new canon. Basically The Rainmaker is the Flashpoint Paradox version of The Joker becoming a permanent hero.
    At least that's the way I saw it.

    It is my opinion that kid blue (guy with the big revolver) is the younger “Abe”.
    Think about it. Abe was sent back, from the future. His younger self has to be living at this time. He has to get involved with them in the future somehow, so the relationship with the organization had to be when he’s younger (had to be with them awhile to be trusted, to be partly in management. But also somewhat of a screwup, hence the crappy job they gave him. In my mind, it’s really obvious! Especially the attention he gives him, & also the way he’s sorta mean with him, because it’s him, doesn’t want him to be a screwup, cause being a screwup is why he ended up with such a crappy placement in management. I’ll repeat this part again, to expound on it = in order for him to be placed in a management/boss position, he would’ve had to be trusted, had to be there from the beginning, also when he started in the beginning of this type of career, he would’ve been sorta in charge in some small way, then grew into the boss he became in the future (to then be sent back in the past by the main boss. Kid blue is sort of a leader of the fighting crew. But...... I get the feeling the director did not think of this, I think it’s just a coincidence that it all lines up. Reason why I don’t think the director thought of this is because when they (in the movie) smash kid blues hand with a hammer, Abe’s hand doesn’t change. They should’ve had Abe look at his own hand after, maybe open it and close it like it hurts from arthritis. They could’ve even had him do that periodically throughout the movie, like a tick, (even befor they smashed kid blue’s hand)

    It doesn't really create a paradox. It just creates a new time line. If you go into the past, that is now your present and future. Old Joe's timeline still happened, but young Joe's actions simply create a new timeline for the Rainmaker. Ergo, no paradox.

      Yeah, I didn't think it was left up to interpretation. The final scene is created to show that events were changed by his suicide, otherwise it has no narrative effect. Another big temporal paradox/plot hole is Old Seth/Young Seth. If Young Seth is captured and has most of his limbs cut off, that completely alters his future self, including the thirty years he lived afterward, and his arrival back in the past, confronted by Young Seth. I don't think we would have been treated to the scene of him stumbling toward the address, with his limbs disappearing. If he had those body parts removed from his young self, his older self could never have run away in the first place. It wouldn't happen the way it was depicted and...Oh my god, I just went cross-eyed.

    Lazy writing is not the first thought I have when thinking of why the writer decided to completely ignore the consistency paradox or anything similar with time travel but perhaps because it gives a lot more freedom to be able to write without those types of restraints as I assumed it is difficult to write coherent stories that are also logically consistent

    I honestly find it incredibly weird that so many UA-cam Critics (Film or Video Game) are trying to science what essentially is magic. Most stories, in my experience, aren't constructed with the technicalities and minutia in mind, it's mostly about characters. The thing I believe about precog and time travel manipulation. The fact is you CAN ONLY change the future by the most 10 seconds without your brain frying or your actions ruin its purpose. Fact I see it, there's an indifference within the VERY LEAST 50 years where regardless of development, humanity itself just cycles and the fact is when its not within your lifetime (to a certain extent) it wouldn't be no different than if you went into the past. One day's ebola is another's plague, the very difference in the science of it and the magic manipulation is the concept of the base constant, yourself. Remember you could be tossed thousands of years into the future, you're still you and you're a regular human with the average experience of 30/40 years which you may understand the concept of atomic energy, medical treatment and combustion engines, its almost impossible to adapt it UNLESS you yourself had studied it ahead of estimated time of departure, which in the end, a time traveler is no different from an immortal, where regardless of what you do, you'll never get what you want, but it doesn't mean you can't make the most of it. Why you'll never know how important a moment is until it becomes a memory.
