A Real Anvil for the Shop: 242 Pound Peter Wright Anvil

  • We finally have a real anvil for the shop in the form of a 242 pound Peter Wright anvil. I am very excited about this as it will really help me in the tool making pursuits I enjoy. The anvil is not perfect and needs a little work but as it is right now it is very usable. This tool will really make blacksmith work much easier. Pretty soon I will have to finish the big coal forge and make our hinges for the barn doors. Hope you folks enjoy this one and I'll see you on the next one.

A friend of mine in the California Blacksmith Assoc. has repaired many Anvils with similar defects. +TheTradesmanChannel hey Jim the damage is more than likely from drawing out stock as opposed to using the horn, i would simply use what in Australia we call weldall rods or stainless steel rods, make sure you preheat as already suggested and just do a little bit at a time, you want to keep the higher temps localised, weldall electrodes are commonly used in the repair of dies, also dont fuss about trying to build that edge back all the way i would keep the radius and just continue to use that area for drawing out stock

    What is the received wisdom on supporting a pounding surface? Not for blacksmithing, just for leatherworking. For instance, if I wanted to hammer inside a van, would that work, or would the vehicle suspension make that a non-starter?

    • @TheTradesmanChannel

      For leather work I would think a van would be just fine.

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes 5 років тому +1

      Remember for striking the most important thing is to be rigidly attached to something heavy. It's the inelasticity (hardness) and inertia of your striking surface that ensures that the power put into the strike ends up in the work. For your purpose, find something relatively heavy to firmly attach the anvil to and you will be fine.

    • @nigelwylie01
      @nigelwylie01 5 років тому

      Ah, @@boooshes thank you. I was never a great one for basic observational physics: I always want to understand deeper concepts which made me a very bad student! Is it to do with inertia relative to gravity, rather than somehow the physical connection to the earth? I have often wondered, for instance why soil can work as a place to rest say an axing chopping block, when soil is so soft. yet put a chunky log on it, and you get a great axe block. So it is hardness & inertia, rather than purely connection to ... the bedrock? That would explain why Jim could put an anvil on the upper floor of his barn, which mystified me.

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes 5 років тому +1

      @@nigelwylie01 first, Jim simply took the anvil upstairs to the wood shop to construct the wooden base for it. He is transferring it back down to use it. With regard to inertia, suffice it to say that as a general rule, the more inertia and the less elasticity, the better. The heavier the striking and the longer the impulse of the blow, the more inertia (mass) you want to react the force. So for heavy work having a massive anvil directly connected to a massive concrete floor is a nice way to go. Many times that isn't practical or necessary. Remember that the softer the material, the more time the force is being applied and the longer the force has to be dissipated. Therefore, the further it will travel. The extreme example is a constant force like the weight of a building which requires not inertia to support it, but a constant force of opposition provided by the foundation and soil (which is relatively soft compared to an anvil). An extremely fast application of force is resisted by the inertia of the struck surface body - it is a collision where the applied energy from the hammer gets translated into 1. Return velocity of the hammer mass, 2. Energy absorbed in the soft metal (or leather) being struck, 3. Velocity of the anvil mass 4. Energy absorbed in the connection of the anvil to its base, 5. Velocity of the base mass, etc., 6. Other losses that become heat due to the collisions. The objective is to get as much energy delivered to the struck object as possible. Since energy is related as a square function of velocity and a direct function of mass, more mass of everything not being struck is better. Also, harder and more rigid means less absorbed energy in the collisions.
