Treasure Town I once went around the country for a family reunion and there was a coin shop near us and it probably was one of the best deals I’ve ever had
Glad you liked it! It's such a shame because there's nothing inherently wrong with the product. If they sold it for 20% of what they charge, they'd still make a hefty profit and would simply be selling a cute novelty. Instead, they choose the greedy, scamming route and charge their insane prices.
@@Silverpicker You should do Littleton Coin Company next! They charge INSANE prices for bog-standard coins. I'm talking $15 (no joke) for a worn, common date Mercury dime. Or $55 for a worn slick Barber half. If that isn't a scam, I don't know what is!
I have gotten a few of these from my grandma. I feel bad years later after she passed away that she got taken for a ride buying them for me, but she knew I loved coins. Thank you! Just thank you! Somebody needed to tell everyone that info. I only have some of those because dealers gave it to me for FREE when I was younger and it was my birthday. Westminster Collection is the same here. Constantly talking about events that took place in the year the coin was struck that literally did not affect the coin at all. Even worse, they prey on the nostalgia of the elderly to trick them into spending far more than market value for low-value old coins and notes. And obviously the overpriced gold and silver (plated) commemoratives. Another thing they do worse than UPM is going on about how their sets are ‘limited edition’ and ‘expected to sell out very quickly’ and ‘secure yours today to avoid disappointment’. And they’re also the ones feeding the rare 50p bonfire...
They're very bad with sending letters and emails. Paying £4.50 for a BU coin that you don't have isn't awful depending on whether its one of the rarer ones - they also have some of the UK coin designs that don't get circulated. I spent about £50 on the 2019 A-Z 10ps, which isn't a bad deal really, as the royal mint was slightly more expensive - and they are actually quite rarer (moreso than the 2018 ones) - and sell for around £4 each on eBay in circulated condition. So they aren't always a rip-off but I don't much like the ads for overpriced plated coins.
Yes, here in the UK the "Westminster Mint" or whatever they call themselves sell seriously tacky and pegged to historical events fantasy coins. They are a serious rip off. Thirty pounds for a "silver plated" coin commemorating WW1. Give me a break....PLEASE! You might as well put your banknotes through a shredder. Its not an investment. An investment is buying silver Britannias off a decent Bullion Website. Its definitely NOT buying from Westminster.....
I will admit I fell for this scheme when I first started out. I immediately noticed the error I made when I received my "hand picked to ensure quality coins" package. They were scratched and worn down to nothing! How angry I was! Thank you so much for putting this out there so nobody else will fall for this Crap! I hope this puts them out of business or sets them straight and gives them no choice but to be honest!
Honestly to me it seems like fraud. I don't understand why they haven't been investigated. If for nothing else then at least for the fact that they show mint state coins on the site but send out junk
One important point to add is that scammers will re-plate zinc over circulated steel pennies to make the look newer or even uncirculated when they actually have most features worn smooth. And the 2 that you have in those folders look re-plated. Great video.
I actually have a 1957 silver certificate I paid a decent amount for, but it was because it had mismatched serial numbers. I have a couple of others that are worth something because they had courtesy autographs of Ivy Baker Priest on them (the 2nd Marilyn Munster's mother). Other than that, unless they are crisp uncirculated, they are worth a little bit, but most dealers won't buy them because they have enough in inventory.
Just like ads on Facebook silver rounds for 5.99. Then on "Words with Friends" and other games . The ads are misleading. They don't care they get paid. GREAT VIDEO. 👍👍👍
It’s a shame that people pay way too much for WWII coinage. As a numismatist, I have more than my fair share, but I only pay the lowest prices or find them circulated. Either way, I use them as a prop when I do reenacting.
The rule of thumb has and always is: buy the coin and not the grade. The same is true here; buy the coin and not the presentation. Lots of gimmicks out there from dipped nickels to ‘first day of issue’ graded eagles. They won’t hold their value and you’ll never see a return in investment. Always be your own advocate and make it a habit to look up sold eBay listings for specific coins
This business practice is alive and well across eBay, where coins are listed for 500% above value "marked down" to 300% above value - provable because I have tracked some coins back to the auction they were recently purchased from. You have to ask, why are crappy $300 coins in slabs? Answer, so he can sell them for $1200.
Never ever let friends and family buy you something for your hobby. In 1992 a baseball card shop sold my girlfriend 5 packs of 1992 Donruss for 3 dollars a pack. Walmart was selling them at .35 cents a pack. He saw her coming. Never ever tell a dealer you know nothing about the hobby. 🙄
I got one of these junk displays when I was 10 like 30 years ago from my mother. I still own it and love it because it’s the memory behind it, I’m sure that’s what they are selling is the memory of the gift, just like a gift card. Would be easier just to enclose a 20 in a card but the gift card seems more personal. Same with these items.. but I see what you mean
Yep, I definitely think these can hold some nostalgia for people for sure. Also, the issue isn't with the product, honestly. If they were making these displays, like the Titanic one, for instance, and sold them for $5, I'd be perfectly fine with it. I wouldn't say it's a good deal, but it's a nice novelty/gift item. It becomes a scam when they charge 10x the value
Dude, this is an important video, thanks, I really hope you'll keep making these kind of vids, I'm really new to this and this kind of stuff could easily trick me
So glad you enjoyed it, Kobi! The whole idea is to keep people safe from scam artists. The hobby is so much fun, but there are bad people out there that can ruin the fun
I see ads for "The Complete 'O' Morgan Silver Dollar Collection" from the Bradford Exchange. You pay $100 a month to get the O mint coins in VG. Even if you stick it out the whole series, you get 23 coins worth 20-30 bucks and three rarer coins: 1893o ($160), 1895o ($180) and 1903o ($350). They're probably hoping that by the time you get to 1893, you'll realize how much you're spending and cancel it so they don't have to find one. By my calculations, you pay $2600 for $1300 in coins in you finish it out.
More than once I have seen two page ads in major newspapers selling generic half ounce silver bars for $29.00 each marked down from $50.00 using many of the techniques you mentioned in this video.
Whenever I go garage sale picking and I see holders like this it’s kind of disheartening to tell the owner that it’s not as valuable as it appears to be. One time I had someone tell me to leave because I told them very respectfully that I’m willing to pay 75% of what the coins are worth and they wanted me gone. I’m pretty upset with these fake holders too. Whenever I get them I just crack the cases and retrieve the coins and toss the cases
Yep, its a shame that these exist. They are really solely there to scam people. I honestly don't understand how they are not being investigated for fraud
I did. But they’re still cool and I like them. My dad gave me a bicentennial quarter in 76 and I always check my packet change. Some disappeared over the years due to family but I kept a few and it’s nice to have a set. Silly.
I totally agree with you - I bought a collection in which had the "Liberty Nickel collection" and it had 5 nickels, one had been badly gold plated. they mentioned the gold plating trick was used on 1883 nickels, yet my one was a worn 1910! The other 4 nickels ranged from a VG 1899 to 1909 and 1910 x 2 in Fair to aGood condition. I valued it at $2 as it was Liberty nickels, but the guys selling to me said they had paid $20 for it in America!!!!
I can't believe they didn't even give you the 1883. But that's another psychology trick right there. Tell you about a valuable or interesting gold plated coin...and then actually just give you a junky gold plated coin
@@Silverpicker Oh sorry - SP I bought a collection meaning I bought it online with a bazillion other coins, some very nice and that particular item was in it - I never bought anything directly off these companies. Some mugu (Nigerian for fool/ I read a lot of 419 baiter stuff) bought them off the company long before I came along.
I do have a couple of those sets but I got 8 years ago. But now I do know it's not worth it. I was only 12 years old. This video was very helpful to me. Loved the video, it made me laugh.
These items, while great at resale from coinshops (at incredibly reduced premiums) are great 'stocking stuffers' to get the young numismatist into collecting, they are clearly fraud. However, these companies benefit from the same laws that keep local coin shops from having to pay sales tax on coins. A double-edged sword for sure.
It is great you are making these trash companies know to new or curious numismatics. The Bradford Exchange and Littletoncoin are two that also prey on seniors and are HUGE rip offs.
@@babyinuyasha They sell them for *WAY* more than that. *WAY* more. www.littletoncoin.com/shop/liberty-walking-half-dollars#facet:&productBeginIndex:0&orderBy:&pageView:grid&minPrice:&maxPrice:&pageSize:& $32 for the most worn, most common date one. XD

I still like the world war II coin sets if they are legit, it’s a nice sealed case with war nickels and others coins used or minted during World War II
And some of those pennies where used by melting old shell casing, so not your standard alloy...,(after the war) and I agree I'll pay a few bucks for them al presented nicely like that .... Its not a scam ...just overpriced usually
I thought you were going to say Littleton coin company who made the aforesaid Nickel collection (They also use psychological tricks) I only bought as it was part of a huge collection.
Hi i just started to collect coins and i was wondering what coins you guys would reccomend. I found sone junk silver around my house. And have some old kennendy half dollars. Im just trying to learn the basics:)
Wow!! That’s a SCAM!! I am that guy who is trying to buy some WW2 letters from you I think we have things mostly figured out except we haven’t figured out a price yet. What are you thinking is a good price + shipping?
@@Silverpicker if they were 5 bucks in a gift shop and if the pennies were at least in red brown condition, then you could say they were making a significant but not outrageous profit.
I bought one of those yesteryears sets 8 years ago for $20. The coins were not in the best shape but silver at the time slightly made up for it. Should coin magazine ads also be considered scams? I bought a barber quarter for $8 and got a 41 merc and a wheat cent for an extra $15. I got lucky and happened to get an 09-VDB wheat for a dollar
Great video exposing something you seem to see more and more these days. Great point about these sometimes being gifts from less informed well intentioned people. !דוּגְרִי
In the retail stores I work for these type of things fly off the shelves. Many domestic tourists buy these types of things. It’s the packaging I think that gets them.
Silverpicker I work in the USA I work for a retail chain that makes a killing off of these. Foreign tourists purchase them as well. But it’s the domestic tourists that are more likely to buy. Kids and adults.
No, those ones in particular came from a good grab bag. The reason getting them in a grab bag or second hand is not a problem, is that they are valued based on the coins. I paid $4.75 for the two of them together, which is not terrible.
I bought one of those in the plastic holder with a walking liberty half dollar, standing liberty quarter, murcery dime, Buffalo nickle and steel penny. The Standing liberty Quarter was dated 1927 and in very, very very nice almost perfect condition. How much did I pay? Wait for it..........$13.00. in 2019. I think I got the deal.
Littleton coins do similar things like this but with coins that they paint like the paint job doesn't add any value to the coin in fact to actually takes value away from it or like those gold plated state quarters even worse the Platinum or Palladium whichever one coating on the outside of the state quarters adds very very little value in fact some collectors won't even take it or will give you $0.25 for the quarter even though it's un circulated .
Good information. You presented it well. I'm not in the business of picking coins though. I don't know what the right word is to represent my feelings towards them, but calling your viewers a "squad" or any other onomatopoeia derivative is annoying. I know it's small, but these things stand out to people sick of the youtubeness of videos.

Proof sets are actually great. The early 70s and under especially have great potential value wise. I've seen such beautiful toned SMS proof pennies. Definitely not a rip off unlike this.
@@Silverpicker That '82 SmS set I got locally was awesome, blue toned dime and quarter but that black and greyish toned Nickel is even nicer. Under 10 sale and the toned coins are worth it.
@@Silverpicker Yes I see these scalper packs around too. What's crazy is I actually got a 1960 D Small Date DDO penny from one of them from some months ago and bought it because the coins were genuinely good quality and then after I looked under the loupe all excited. I'm relying on purchasing instincts and seem to have a neck for it.
@@Silverpicker Instead of these scammer sites the real MvPs are still your regular guy coin dealer. They deliberately keep error coins in their lots to make it worth the customers time or simply they honestly may not be a fan of errors.
@@Silverpicker Crazy what you can find in antique stores and such. I snagged a 1863 Indian with double cuds on the reverse.. for 10 bucks 🤣🤣 Literally no one else but I came around and seen that and the coin was around for some months before I took a better look 😄

Another one scammer is cable shopping network that has air time 4-6 am Saturday mornings their trying to sell 2020 ms70 silver eagles for 330 dollars and at the local coin store same coin is selling for around 35-40 dollars
They have some cool jewelry and knives and stuff which are decently overpriced mainly the Morgan necklace for 144 and the gold plated stuff the walker collection is literally funny That’s how overpriced it’s 2,000 for worn walkers
Have a hardTime with patreons & clubs too. UA-camrs can be scammers also. Streaming can scam you too. Buyer beware. I've seen some terrible streaming scams $250 buys you a box of half dollars you get to keep any of the silver that is found. The UA-cam streamer pays $500 to get the box charges you $250 to search it and you get maybe $25 worth of silver if you're lucky?? They then redeposit the unclaimed halves and keep the $250. Who's making money there?? Then they call it a donation so that they don't have to pay tax on it. Oh yeah.
That's true, but I want to make it clear that I do not engage in any of that stuff. You can decide for yourself that joining my Patreon is not for you, but it's not a scam. I say exactly what you get for supporting my channel. Not to mention, $3 a month to get access to my discord and support my work is not exactly a fortune.
I have a older friend that is constantly getting scammed.... she bought a Morgan dollar and when she got it it was a new Replica of a Morgan dollar, and she bought one of those packages that said coins over the years or something like that it was all heavy circulated coins and a buffalo coin that was rated average circulated/ fine tops the pack was worth 1-3 dollars lol I hate those TV commercials oh buy this uncirculated silver coin collection or gold and it’s plated with maybe 10% precious metals tops? Hey those companies scam people and make millions of dollars for garbage!

:(
I got one of these junk displays when I was 10 like 30 years ago from my mother. I still own it and love it because it’s the memory behind it,
I’m sure that’s what they are selling is the memory of the gift, just like a gift card.
Silverpicker yeah. I feel you.
Great info, especially for someone more versed in paper currency!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
OMG. Im new to collecting.. April 2020 I began...I never thought. wow!
Glad to be of service :)
The slap chop ad came on half way through this video and fuck did I forget how legendary that shit was
😂😂😂
I see ads for "The Complete 'O' Morgan Silver Dollar Collection" from the Bradford Exchange. You pay $100 a month to get the O mint coins in VG. Even if you stick it out the whole series, you get 23 coins worth 20-30 bucks and three rarer coins: 1893o ($160), 1895o ($180) and 1903o ($350). They're probably hoping that by the time you get to 1893, you'll realize how much you're spending and cancel it so they don't have to find one. By my calculations, you pay $2600 for $1300 in coins in you finish it out.
Yeesh
More than once I have seen two page ads in major newspapers selling generic half ounce silver bars for $29.00 each marked down from $50.00 using many of the techniques you mentioned in this video.
It's such a shame that they allow those ads to run
Whenever I go garage sale picking and I see holders like this it’s kind of disheartening to tell the owner that it’s not as valuable as it appears to be. One time I had someone tell me to leave because I told them very respectfully that I’m willing to pay 75% of what the coins are worth and they wanted me gone. I’m pretty upset with these fake holders too. Whenever I get them I just crack the cases and retrieve the coins and toss the cases
Yep, its a shame that these exist. They are really solely there to scam people. I honestly don't understand how they are not being investigated for fraud
Oh dear, I just got a set from govmint. I got bicentennial as I’ve collected the quarters forever.
As long as you didn't pay too much it shouldn't be an issue. And if you did, just look forward, not backward :)
I did. But they’re still cool and I like them. My dad gave me a bicentennial quarter in 76 and I always check my packet change. Some disappeared over the years due to family but I kept a few and it’s nice to have a set. Silly.
It makes me so angry that Ebay really doesn't seem to care. ;
On eBay I'm less concerned about these because the prices are not as absurd. eBay has it's other problems though lol
Glad you enjoyed it and are past that part of your collecting career!
@@Silverpicker thank you so much.
Yep, that's a very good point :(
It is great you are making these trash companies know to new or curious numismatics. The Bradford Exchange and Littletoncoin are two that also prey on seniors and are HUGE rip offs.
I'll definitely take a look into them
Oh my you had me lol 🤣honesty shall set you free.
Great job helping the newbies to our hobby. Thanks
Good PSA - shared with several friends and relatives who might be suckered by this stuff
Thanks Sean! Much appreciated
I unfortunately already have a couple of these. Thanks for informing me about this!
My pleasure! Glad to help
Do forget the Littleton coin company. They love selling silver twice the spot price.
They sell average Walking Liberties for like $18 each
Baby Inuyasha the last time I looked at the website. They were selling a kilo of silver for $1,000!
@@babyinuyasha They sell them for *WAY* more than that. *WAY* more.

$32 for the most worn, most common date one. XD
Presentation is everything...anybody have a 3D/laser printer? Need to put some coins in cases...JK!!!! I can stick my head up a bulls butt, but I'll take the Butcher's word for it🤣. Keep doing what you do
Gotta love Tommy Boy ;)
Hahahah
Thanks for educating people
That's what I'm here for 😁
The five dislikes are for the five directors of the board of UPM- American Coin Scammers
*oops, I mean treasures.
Hahaahah Amazing, Lily
To follow this up you could do a beginners guide to what gives most coins actual value
Not a bad idea!
You know it's too much if eBay has cheaper prices.
What’s the best coin collection catalog that I can buy from
I still like the world war II coin sets if they are legit, it’s a nice sealed case with war nickels and others coins used or minted during World War II
And some of those pennies where used by melting old shell casing, so not your standard alloy...,(after the war) and I agree I'll pay a few bucks for them al presented nicely like that ....
Its not a scam ...just overpriced usually
love to hear about scams and shopping for silver on Instagram, thanks!
My pleasure Sean!
I thought you were going to say Littleton coin company who made the aforesaid Nickel collection (They also use psychological tricks) I only bought as it was part of a huge collection.
This particular nickel collection I showed was made by UPM, but I bet other companies have made very similar ones
Hi i just started to collect coins and i was wondering what coins you guys would reccomend. I found sone junk silver around my house. And have some old kennendy half dollars. Im just trying to learn the basics:)
Out of curiosity which is the bigger scam? This alleged "scam" or the accepted markups?
Reasonable markups is fine. That's how every single business works in a capitalist system.
Thanks for letting me know
No problem!
Thanks for the information sir
My pleasure, Lorena!
Thank you for the information
My pleasure, Chaim!
Wow!! That’s a SCAM!! I am that guy who is trying to buy some WW2 letters from you I think we have things mostly figured out except we haven’t figured out a price yet. What are you thinking is a good price + shipping?
Hey Logan! Sorry about that. Can't find our last email, can you resend?
Will do!
Im been scam by those when i 1st started lol
Still like them they look good no why i would buy them now years later
I agree! There's nothing inherently wrong with the product. If they were $5, I wouldn't complain. The issue is that they're $20+
I think it all depends on the specific ad. If you send me some I'll take a look and see!
@@Silverpicker I have only seen 1 coin magazine and that was almost 9 years ago so unfortunately I won't be able to do that
I buy these a lot but I only pay silver value plus I like to replace the bad coins with AU BU stuff and resale them...
That is a smart idea!
Good work like always man
Thanks Santino!
Lived this!!!! Shared it on my channel under " friends of Ace" Thank you aha for the heads up and great information
Really glad you enjoyed it. Hope it helps protect those you shared it with!
Great video SilverPicker!
Thanks Colin!
Great video exposing something you seem to see more and more these days. Great point about these sometimes being gifts from less informed well intentioned people. !דוּגְרִי
Thanks Mark. I hate seeing people get ripped off, especially when it's so intentional
Great info!!!!
Thanks!!
In the retail stores I work for these type of things fly off the shelves. Many domestic tourists buy these types of things. It’s the packaging I think that gets them.
What country are you located in? What about foreign tourists?
Silverpicker I work in the USA I work for a retail chain that makes a killing off of these. Foreign tourists purchase them as well. But it’s the domestic tourists that are more likely to buy. Kids and adults.
Grab bag junk. Though you sent those back😂👍
No, those ones in particular came from a good grab bag.
Wow, that's an excellent deal! I know you didn't get it retail lol
@@Silverpicker I bought it off of eBay. I was surprised it didn't sell for more.
The most important thing is to be aware of it and tell others!
Very good, I enjoyed this video!
i found 20 ms 61, 62, 64 quarters selling for $180 I want it for my collection and I want to know if it's worth it
It really depends on the years and whether they are graded and who they are graded by.
Another good vid, would love to see more like this
Thanks so much! Always love your positive comments :)
Thanks good video
That 1943 penny looks replated, defintely not "collectible condition" unless they mean collecting inside a novelty giant-size Coke bottle.
Lol, exactly
Good information. You presented it well. I'm not in the business of picking coins though. I don't know what the right word is to represent my feelings towards them, but calling your viewers a "squad" or any other onomatopoeia derivative is annoying. I know it's small, but these things stand out to people sick of the youtubeness of videos.
I hear you. What would you recommend I call the community I'm building here?
@@Silverpicker That is a hard question to answer. I don't necessarily mean the word squad in particular. Honestly, though, don't listen to me. You got a good community here so call them whatever you like.
@@Neceros Thanks man! Appreciate it :)
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure!
Proof sets are actually great. The early 70s and under especially have great potential value wise. I've seen such beautiful toned SMS proof pennies. Definitely not a rip off unlike this.
For sure
I smell something...... And its you! Discord, HA!
Do I need a shower? 😂
@@Silverpicker haha sorry just talkin about tthe discord and stuff it just sounded like BS to me. I just thought it would be funny. And yea thank you for this video. It seems like it should be a no brainer but it doesnt really atick out to se people the way it should. Until someone brings it to their attention.
Yeah about 10 years ago I bought one of those WW2 coin sets...well 10 years later at least I have some war nickels 🤦♂️
Lol, Don't beat yourself up. Let's just chalk up the price you paid to include the lesson!
Omg I went on there sit to see how much they charged...What a complete ripe off ..thank for these videos...
Talk about Littleton Coin Company Next
Back years ago when i was like in 8th grade or freshman year of high school. I got a 20th century collection came with a merc dime ( which was clean ) an average buffalo nickel, a zinc penny ( dont know its just good condition or what ) but it doesn’t feel clean and a regaler bicentennial quarter.
Did the person who bought it for you buy it retail?
It was at a local peddlers mall by my house
Good Info!!!
Thanks Lucy!
Thanks
Another one scammer is cable shopping network that has air time 4-6 am Saturday mornings their trying to sell 2020 ms70 silver eagles for 330 dollars and at the local coin store same coin is selling for around 35-40 dollars
I'm planning on doing a video about them too. Very infuriating right?
They have some cool jewelry and knives and stuff which are decently overpriced mainly the Morgan necklace for 144 and the gold plated stuff the walker collection is literally funny That’s how overpriced it’s 2,000 for worn walkers
How do we buy stuff ur selling?
I would join the discord... IF IT WAS FREE!!!!
Hopefully you can talk some sense into her, David. Maybe share this video with her. Also, I might do another one in this series about HSN/QVC
So I purchased 4 2009 penny’s. In one of those cases. I payed 1$ was that a scam
Buying anything for $1 is not really a scam. i think you did fine
@@Silverpicker thanks, I just found out that comment sounded sarcastic sorry
