I grew up where country music was always playing. This was the time of the British invasion. So when I hung out with my friends it was all about the Beatles, Rolling Stone and the Monkeys but when I was alone in my childhood home I played Hank Thompson. One day my mother caught me. That was the day she knew she and dad had raised me right. Ok I admit it I love old ET (Ernest Tubb). Always have always will.

I didn't discover him until the early '70's, and I've been a fan ever since. The Singing Legend, Hank Thompson, a true entertainer.

I was fortunate enough to see Hank in person in Branson Missouri many years ago and even more fortunate to have met the great man when I won the door prize which was to do a number with him on stage , five minutes of my life I will never forget , what a great singer and all-round great man

Licks he learned from Merle Travis when he played in his band.

Funny he sang some of Left Frizzell's songs but said he couldn't quite copy him because he had acquired the name "Lefty" for the way he handled a guitar, left handed. Hank didn't really know much about old Lefty. He was still the guy everyone tried to copy!

I have a CD which was given to me several years ago called Hank Thompson's Greatest hits. There are minimal credits on the cover and the songs have been remastered with different backup players dubbed in. There is a steel guitar break on "A Six Pack To Go" that blew me away. If anyone knows who the musician was I would really appreciate your sharing it.

I know that the legendary steel guitarist Curly Chalker played steel for Hank for a while. Hope this helps, my friend.🙂

Lefty was right handed. Got his nickname for his left hook.

I was about to correct Ol' Hank. I had the chance to back Lefty in 1961 when I was with a Country band in Honolulu & he did a Military base tour in Hawaii, he didn't play much when he sang but he did play right handed & a steel guitarist I played with years later who had played with him in the early years said he could attest to his hook.
