  • A visit to Crewe Heritage Centre. Starting in the ATP we explore the interior of Britain's first tilting train. We explore the main exhibition hall where we find a class 47. We explore the cab of a class 87. We visit no less than three signal boxes with views of passing trains. Finally I become Singalman at Exeter West Signal Box.
Thank you very much to Crewe Heritage Centre for a great afternoon and the volunteers assistance with making this film.

That makes a change, usually it`s our heritage that disappears under a Tesco. I was 3 years on Routemasters in London and I loved every minute, such fun to drive.

I was a box lad at South box until I was 18 then transferred onto the footplate.
There was 4 people in the box, 2 signalmen, requlator and the all important box lad.
Crewe station A was halfway up opposite platform 1

The 'tramway'up to the signal box used to continue on a 'spider bridge' across the tracks to the station. It was used (with miniature steam locos) to transport parts and materials between the works (now the Heritage Centre) and the station. Pity it's not still there for passsengers!

Hi Henry, I really enjoyed your video and it made me feel like I should go and visit the center, I used to live in Crewe and went along time ago so maybe another visit is on the cards. Maybe I'll get to have a go in the signal box with the levels - where the two people in there just doing it for show or was it actually taking to another signal box?

Glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for watching. They were contacting with a computer which simulates the actions of other signal boxes.
