I watched the movie recently and was disappointed with the ending. Some explanatory notes at the end would help. What happened to the Nazi commander since he wasn't killed? Was he later arrested and put on trial for his war crimes? What about the officer just below him who was complicit in that crime? Also, did Max and Helene stay together and raise the child as their own?
Very pertinent questions...
I watched this film in german, because I didn't find it in english... and I didn't understand if Helen's son's father this man(Thomas) or no?

In the book written by Simon Wiesenthal, Max and Helen were the only 2 survivors of that concentration camp and both refused to testify for the sake of the child. Simon ultimately decided not to prosecute, but as he still wanted their story to be told, he changed the true names of the survivors to protect their identities.
Max escaped the concentration camp only to end up in a Soviet prison, but 20 yrs after leaving Helen, he found her again. Helen's son "Merrick" was a young man and the exact image of his father. Due to the horrors that Max had endured, he could not bear to be in the same room as Merrick and sadly, left Helen but with no promise to return.
For all those who need closure, there is a 1990 movie version of this book that does follow the book fairly close and does end in a reunion.
