Probably the most sensible chap in the entire film...
I always liked that New England accent... Kennedy Kennedy Kennedy Swing batta !
Daaaaa dunt daaaaa dunt. da dunt daa dunt da dunt 👍
Absolutely. LoL 😂
I got him to sing a Lobster Buoy after tracking him down thanks to someone at WBZ radio. Robert Shaw had signed the Bouy for my Dad in 1974
it saved his life too. Sadly we all know what happened to Quint.
lololololo
I know this is said many times so I will articulate it once more, Robert Shaw deserved an Oscar for his role as Quint in Jaws.
He captured the salty character perfectly.
If anything his telling of the plight of the Indianapolis should have won him the Oscar stand alone. Most chilling scene in the movie !
Damn straight.
He would have got one if he was a Yank 🇬🇧
@@billmoran3219Nailed it 👌
Insane how Shaw delivers every line. He could order a pizza and have you lean in.
well stated
"I'll Take Pineapple on it......Anchovies.......I'll take her Large.......An I'll Take it All for $4 an 50 cents........not a penny more"......
Yes sir.
Nailed it.
@@MisterBlue80Dude I feel like if Shaw heard you actually say this, he'd be like" Lucky you nailed it or I'd have thrown out the little window on the side!"😂😂😂
Wow that’s a treat. Often wondered about the little guy who followed Quint around.
Me too. He wasn’t that crazy. Bet Quint was thinking that as Bruce chowed down on his legs.😂
I thought they used him as chum....
Same here!
@@ianmc87what about the hound dog?
He didn’t have the balls to go fishing.
Robert Shaw as Quint was genius casting.
Shaw's USS Indianapolis story line is some of the best in any movie ever made.
He became his character in the telling of the tale.
That speech was written by John Milius (who also wrote Clint Eastwood's "Do you feel lucky?" speech among other great ones), but it was too long, so had to be partially improvised by Shaw. Milius was uncredited, but was one of the scriptwriters who worked it over. I learned that from the documentary Milius.
@@HeyMykeeI'd heard in a documentary that it was actually scriptwriters who'd submitted a draft of it and then it was Shaw himself who asked to do the rewrite and so what we heard was the result of that.
@@HeyMykeeLIES, you made that up for internet bazooka.
That's the difference between a great actor, and someone reading lines!
The other "actor" was just a resident on Martha's Vineyard, according to the description.
Spielberg chose many secondary actors because they looked like characters from a Norman Rockwell painting. He was a huge admirer of Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers and collected the original paintings, and many of the more background characters (like "Bad Hat Harry") really look like walking caricatures. I think this was one of them. Also this scene pointed up the similarities between Quint and Captain Ahab, whose relentless obsession with hunting Moby Dick killed himself and his entire crew (except for the narrator).
It just makes you appreciate how great an actor Robert Shaw actually was.
Magnificent actor and human being
Why does the first mate actor sucks?
@davidjamessheets He had a small part in the movie. To be honest I don't think he even had a line.
Yeah because they cut it lol.. they obvs planned a line for him so I'm curious how he got the role
Because he's surrounded by incompetence? How about his brilliant acting
You know a lot of times i watch a deleted scene and cant understand why they took it out. This is not one of those times
The person in this scene with Shaw is more than likely not the actor who was to play the part, but a stand-in hired to help the director block out the scene.
@@philiphatfield5666no, he’s just a local of Martha’s Vineyard with no acting experience and had been seen in the scene where Quint scratched the chalk board and left when Quint left.
Dude couldn’t make a good take on his line.
LOL
They usually take them out because the movie is only allowed to run so long, so they have to pick something to cut. I saw a movie not too long ago with an actor I liked, but he only had four scenes. It turned out he had a much bigger part, but the majority of his scenes got cut. That must be so frustrating to work hard on a role and have your best work hit the editing room floor.
I've owned every addition of Jaws there is. From VHS to 4K and I've never seen this deleted scene included in the special features. You found a very rare deleted scene. Cool, thanks for posting it. I love this movie 🦈👍
It’s been in the deleted scenes for decades now. On the two tape VHS set for Jaws’s 25th Anniversary as well as the DVD version of that release and then 5 years later for the 30th Anniversary DVD, the Blu-Ray and now 4K Blu-Ray. It’s not rare at all.
“Mr. Quint. I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your shark hunt…….on the day of your shark hunt. And I hope that the first shark…will be a masculine shark….”
I suppose he decided he didn't want to sleep with the fish(es)!
He wasn't happy with the Larry Vaughns, shopping around for a change.
Nice! -Well Done.
This 😂😂😂 you nailed it brother. God fucking bless .
Luca Brasi!!!
Well, he was right. He pretty much already knew that the boat was doomed.
small leaky boat + big shark= game over
There is an interview with the mate online. He was a local fisherman they spotted and asked to be an extra and later to pilot and help out on one of the many boats they took out to do the filming. He used to bring his dog and caught Spielberg's attention and was asked if he wanted to be Quint's mate. In this scene, Spielberg asked him to make up his own lines about not going out, and he gave a line that he heard fishermen say... "'I'm not going on that old slab." They were trying to capture an authentic fisherman and lingo. That's probably why Speilberg and Shaw didn't go ballistic like they may have if he was a paid actor. When asked if he was disappointed that this scene was cut, he said, "No. They made enough to make four movies. They were here from May to the end of October."
Robert Shaw was the perfect actor to play Quint. Truly underrated actor.
I don’t think he was under rated by the industry itself when you see certain actors nowadays with the calibre of Jason Isaacs, or perhaps even Michael Sheen they have numerous roles because they bring so much but not very often the leading role in a large film?
Who in tf underrates Robert Shaw???? He has globally been hailed as one of the most important characters in this classic film. Unless you have a poorly functioning third cousin that does not see his genius, I will have to say that your comment does not hold water.
@@drk321no one underrates him. People have to describe everything on UA-cam as underrated.
How is Robert Shaw under rated? Thats just ridiculous comment! Gotta be kidding me. Every scene on you tube of a movie. Someone comments the actor is under rated. I’ll bet someone somewhere said Marlon Brando is underrated
@@chrisbirch4150so true! Every actor is under rated on UA-cam!
This explains the rest of the scene. What Quint is looking at when he hands Brody the moonshine and when he suddenly complains about not being able to find any help under 60.
That's some bad acting Harry
He wasn’t an actor, he was a fisherman they found while filming and asked him to be in the movie.
Hat, its a bad hat harry.
He was nominated for an Oscar for that scene.
That’s the Luca Brassi scene from The Godfather.
😂
I watch jaws regularly , it really is one of the best movies of all time.
Guys you're acting like the entire line delivery by the mate would have been kept. He was running through variations of the lines, which would have given the editors different audio/shots to work with, and then whatever they didn't keep would be removed - the scene cuts to Quint, so it wouldn't have mattered, editing was necessary.
This scene should have been kept and plugged in before the house keeping tasks that Brody was present for before they launched. It explained where his boy went, and how smart he actually was.
But all deliveries of his line were amateurish.
I like the bit where he says "I quit"
I missed that😅
We all wondered why the little guy didn't get a line. It was a good one too.
Now we know why he didn't get a line.
Interesting to see the vast difference between someone who isn't an actor and one who who most definitely is.
I was about to say the same thing. no fault to the fisherman, he isn't an actor. I can see where Spielberg was going though with this scene. At least the way I'm interpreting Shaw's reaction in the scene.
Seems to me Spielberg wanted a more...."listen man, I ain't going on that boat to catch that shark, and if you go, it could be your end" something like that, with a bit more conviction from the fisherman to Quint.
@@italiangypsy79 Should have brought a reliable character actor in there who'd probably do the part on the cheap....Elisha Cook Jr. was still working a lot at the time.....he'd have probably done it for peanuts and been convincing!
@@italiangypsy79 looking at the reaction of the extra, I think it was supposed to be “I’m more afraid of that shark than I am of you”. Notice when quint moves towards him, the extra keeps the chair between them. I think he’s supposed to be a man who’s been bullied and pushed around by Quint for a long time but something has finally scared him enough that he’ll somewhat stand up for himself.
@@KClouisville Elisha Cook Jr. would've made for a great actor here, I could definitely see him in the role
I prefer the mystery of his friend standing on the dock as he leaves. A fellow survivor of the Indianapolis perhaps or just a fellow sea dog Quint respects.
@@vlcheish We certainly didn't need to see a scene that is NOT part of story. I OFFICIALLY don't like deleted scenes.
Shaw was a total beast of an actor. So natural in all roles. What a talent.
I always wondered what happened to this guy. Yes, he was a terrible actor, so cutting this scene out was probably a good idea
"These pretzels are makin' me thirsty..."
These pretzels are making ME thirsty.
That guy had the Voice of a Squirrel
Sounds more like a chipmunk IMO
Horrible actor, incredibly smart character.
He was a fisherman on Martha's vineyard, not an actor
@@nugsovile4333 needed more of the accent IMO.
He wasn't horrible
Who quint?
Thank god this was cut
In case someone didn't understand it very well the guy is saying that he's gonna quit.
Some of it is the actor, some of it is the dialog. "Mr. Quint, I quit."
Rumor has it he stayed behind and kept Mrs. Brody company 😆
😆
you know that in the novel, that's what Hooper was doing...
Now the movie finally makes sense.
They should have pulled in Charlton Heston last minute like in Wayne's World 2
William Shatner:
Quinn.....I .... had ... enough ... of .. you! I... quit!
or Shatner as Quinn, & the shark is named Khan!
Shaw was brilliant in this film, and many others, and very much deserved an Oscar for the role.
"Ya follow?" 😂 (The Sting)
Thank you! Never seen this before. I've always wondered what happened to that guy and why he wasn't on the boat.
The guy is A REAL FISHMAN from Martha's vineyard, not a Scheider, a Shaw, a Dreyfuss... Not an actor. U could be more polite plz...
If you accept money to be an actor - or a fisherman, a policeman, a soldier, whatever - you need to be able to do that task. He was wasting people's time.
@@JMoruzzi If you say so, Billy.
@@JMoruzzihe wasn’t paid to do this. He was a local fisherman who helped steer the boats and sush when they were filming at sea. Spielberg asket him to do this
Always wondered why he didn’t go with them. Too bad, wasted shark food. Thanks for posting!
he survived but was he in the sequels? no!
What a gem. I remember that little fella during the blackboard scene. Always wondered why he wasnt on the boat with the others.
You can feel Spielberg off camera shaking his head and giving a "Don't even bother" look to Verna Fields.
I worked out who was after watching the film about three times, Quint would of had to have 1st mate of second pair of hands to run his business especially when out on the Orca, who would have driven the boat when he was landing big Sharks, you see him on couple of scenes including at the dock loading the Orca, would have been nice to include this scene, I wonder if he was a local on the Island, don't recall his name in the film either, maybe its on the credits
I don't need no stinkin' shark.
He spent time with a native of the area. He is even in the film a couple of times. This is who Robert built his charecter on.
Smart guy. He knew if he'd went on that boat he might as well have put on a red shirt because he wasn't coming back.
But, jokes aside, there is no way Spielberg could have placed him on the boat. Imagine a non-actor having to share scenes with Shaw, Scheider, and Dreyfuss. And you couldn't just ignore him in that confined setting. Spielberg HAD to keep him off that boat right from the start.
If he wasn't an actor, who was he?
@@nicholasmuro1742 We was a real fisherman from Martha's Vinyard by the name of Hershel West, who the casting director saw while looking for extras. She showed him to Spielberg and he wanted him in the movie -- pretty much as scenery. Jaws (and documentaries about Jaws) is the only film he ever appeared in.

I googled it. Thanks. Interesting story
"I don't want no help, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself "......proceeds to fire his assistant for not wanting to go.
Loved this movie and will always love this character
Ugh this is like finding buried treasure for a jaws enthusiast ❤
Robert Shaw was an amazing actor. His portrayal of Quint is one of the finest acting performances in the history of cinema. I pray that he’s in heaven enjoying a pint and entertaining God as much as he entertained me.
Shaw is like, "Do this, Do that, Do some more work, then hit the road"
He's lucky.... Gen Z today wouldn't even have shown up to give their notice.
Shaw...woof, that's acting. How about a nod to the script. "You're on the beach." Old marinerspeak...a sailor without a ship...
best line in movie was from mrs Brody."wanna get drunk and fool around"?. I use it often.😅❤
QUINT is one of my favorite movie characters of all-time and ROBERT SHAW should have been nominated and won the ACADEMY AWARD. Rest in Power
Shaw is an incredible actor , I just love his powerful style!!!
I'd have to agree with cutting the scene. Although Shaw was great and i did wonder what happened to the little guy.
Pity that was cut....... could have made this movie a classic 😅
Bro knew the future!!! He knew he gonna die if he goes catch yhe shark 😂
I'm glad they cut that! Some scenes need to be cut. Its like they had one take, and they went with it. Then realized that scene doesn't affect anything if removed.
I ain't going to get the blackfish, I'm not going to pump out the bilges, and I ain't gonna top off the fuel tanks. You fire me, I'm fired. Effective immediately.
Right. Dude gets fired and told he’s not getting paid and then given tasks.
Even back then, Steven said “beautiful…cut” ❤️
As far as I'm concerned, Quint and the shark were the stars of that movie.
Mr Quit I quint!
Dude just didn’t fancy been bit in half !!! Mr Quint on the other hand
Glad they cut it. That guy was probably a local, an extra. Definitely not a professional actor. Didn’t feel realistic at all.
Yes, in the summary it mentioned he was a local from Martha's Vineyard, not a career actor. Was that multiple takes, or did he really say "I quit" 4 times? Last take wasn't too bad I guess.
The decision to cut this part was correct 💯
Just a little work with him and it could have worked! It explains why the assistant wasn't with him!
Robert Shaw was flawless of course! You may say he was "Quintessential"!
The final cut should have made some reference to why his mate was not going on the hunt with Brody & Hooper - leaving this scene out was understandable - they could have just had Quint make some quip about it while Brody was chumming ..
He didn't make a bad decision by not going. Kinda reminded me of The perfect storm.
Maybe if they’d had a bigger crew and a fourth man he’d have made the difference. Especially with his amazing energy.
“Seen one eat a rockin’ chair one time.”
Good scene, but I'm glad they cut it.I like the idea of quint working alone.
Shaw was just amazing. One of the greats!
Did anyone else notice Quint drinking the Narragansett brand beer in the movie ? I’m from Connecticut and my dad ( WWII VETERAN ) drank that crappy New England brand … 😂

“Mister Quit, I quint!”
I love that orange hat donning side kick
Is this dude supposed to be "RAIN MAN" ? 😂🤣
Earned it’s place on the floor.
I don't blame the guy for not going.
Gold! What a performance
His delivery was shocking. Terrible acting. I imagine this was a major reason why the scene was cut.
He fired him so convincingly that they fired him in real life it seems!
Scheider, Dreyfuss and Shaw all were just perfectly cast for their roles in this iconic film. Unfortunately the amount of bad press it gave sharks was incalculable but it's still an amazing book and movie.
Imagine how much better the movie could have been…
Nice of him to give his help a list of pre-fired work to do.
Wow , after all these years I honestly thought I’d seen all the deleted scenes! What a pleasant surprise to see a new one !!
I don't think I've ever scene this clip before. What video format was this released on?

Would have been cool to meet Roy Schieder and Robert Shaw. Really great actors.
I worked with Bobby Shaw back in the hey days, great guy
I can see why it was cut.

With pun intended, Robert Shaw's performance is in all of filmdom the quintessential supporting male role, and he not only did not win, he wasn't even NOMINATED.
Un-FFFing-believable!!!
Shaw was probably loaded in this scene.
