  • Sorry for all the initial talking but was trying to introduce those that don't know much about a Twin Beech to some of the differences between it and other planes and some of the things that make it.. well, just cool.

    Beautiful airplane, beautiful airpark.
    I was a crew chief for a guy in Chino (KCNO) twin Beach D18S N121SC. I had the same oil recovery system as you. I didn't notice if you had the electric fuel pump or not, ours was the hand pump style. I worked on every thing on that plane fun to fly. Thanks for sharing.

    Very nice. I worked as a lineman at KMQJ back in the 1980's and there was at least 1 Beech 18 housed there which was used for courier services. I remember having to fuel those big beautiful airplanes as well as having the ability to get up close and personal with everything. And I recall having a Turbo Commander there a few times, too. Thanks for helping me remember the fun times at the airport. Cheers!

    Have always loved this airplane and LOVE the sound of the engines (any radial engine). Every thing about this video was very well done and was patiently waiting for ignition but instead a noise that caused me to CRASH LAND! The bigger the radial, the sweeter the pulsing sound of life.....

    Anybody remember the movie “it’s a mad mad mad world” back in the early 60’s. Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett and Jim Backus flu the twin beach in that hilarious scene where it buzzed the control tower and flew through a billboard. Classic comedy movie and a Classic airplane. My late father-in-law flew one and spoke highly of it.

      Back in 1974 I had just had a hernia repaired and was sharing a room with another guy just out of abdominal surgery and what comes on but It’s a Mad Mad Mad World. We both would laugh so hard then yell in agony. The nurse wanted us to turn off the movie but it was too funny. We damn near ripped our stitches out at that movie. One of the funniest movies of all time! 😂😂

    Over 40 years ago I acquired a couple of hundred hours in the B-18! It was good to be reminded of the fine points! I had forgotten about pulling the props through! One thing about that airplane anyone with any time in it will tell you is: "There are two kinds of B-18 pilots! Those that have ground looped one, and those that haven't, YET!" Fellow who checked me out in the type had over 5,000 hours in them. About a week after he signed me off he ground looped one at Denver Stapleton. No damage, but very embarrassing! I came close once. Only reason I am in the latter list is I didn't fly it that long.

    I thought everyone was being a little petty with all the complaints about the music but I was wrong. Who picks music like this for this type of video? More importantly, who makes music like this? Thanks for the comments as I went right to the music part, watched for about 10 seconds and moved on. Sad because it is a beautiful aircraft.

    The mods were Kits designed and Mfg by Aerospace Products. Lee Cameron Prop. Speed gains, added gross weight the main goals.The nose is fiberglass with taxi light built in. Leading edge landing lights replaced the 8 inch retracts. This was done on all Volpar conversions to create a wet wing the Turbines were gas hogs. The Cowl vents added to increase cooling also depressurize them which improved R.O.C. Cowl flaps are original, oddly, as there was a 1 pc replacement kit available? The fiberglass wing tips supposedly added a little airspeed. Landing gear doors are basically stock Super 18 doors that wrap around behind the tires to ad some A.S. The wrap around windshield opened up your view a bit and added hinged "storm" windows on either side. The down side was a noisier cockpit. Cabin windows were added as the cabins were usually extended by removing the aft bulkhead (potty door) allowing 2 more cabin Pax seats. The Air Stair door was added to make boarding easier, and to accommodate an extended tail wheel truss that raised the tail on the ground to improve cockpit vis. Oh and the angle of incidence change on the horizontal tail did not make it harder to land. It made it a bit faster. Metal covered flaps/ailerons'rudders were also an upgrade. Also a 2nd rudder trim tab was added. Stories of these being ground loop trainers is a myth created by unskilled pilots to excuse ham fisted handling. Yes, the airplane does NOT like engine outs at VMC. The ONLY move then is power OFF on the good engine or it will speed you to the scene of the crash. This owner claims 155 kts cruise which seems slow to me in light of these "speed" mods. I flew my 18's for 30+ years and were always a delight to handle. Pulling the props through becomes unnecessary if you install "snot box" (sump) drains. Draining the sumps while parked into a can and recycling it. As oil drains down from the upper cyls, the sump OVER fills and runs into the lower cylinders causing a liquid lock. A little carelessness here can get VERY expensive. We specialized in Beech 18 parts from 1968-2018. I worked for Aerospace in 66-68 before starting our own company.

    >^..^< Nice ten cent tour Glenn, thank you....... AND, nice drone camera work too..........
    In the late 1970s-early 80s I noticed there was a small fleet of 18s in Hawaii that would caravan a flight seeing tour of the major islands all in one day that had this type of windows. Wonder if your bird is one of them?
    As a High School student, my last 2.5 years in school were as a line boy after school and weekends at an small airport that was a feeder to JFK n EWR from N.E. Pa. One of their two aircraft was a stock 18. I got some great stories to tell about my expereinces with this 18 BUT best not in public actually. AnyWay, lotsO good memories and one near lethal story to tell about pushing it out of the hangar manualy early one morning with only two guys....

    I've some small history with Beech 18s; the one you portray is from the year of my birth. So I am biased.
    In the late 1970s I was privileged to sit right seat as Carol Faisd was dropping fingerlings into Desolation Wilderness lakes with a California DFG Beech 18 that had been converted to turboprop. It was sort of scary how, as we were pulling up out of a tight lake basin, he would point and show the 60 degree mountain slope he would use for an engine-out situation.
    I totally loved being in that cockpit with such a cool dude running things.

    You mean longest produced at the time they quit manufacturing? Not quite following what you were saying? They were built from 1937 to 1969/70.

    • @nizexlizzy
      @nizexlizzy  5 років тому

      Yeah, well a few things are in order I guess. 1) I was told this fact by multiple other people but thinking I might should have added twin engine to the statement. 2) Yes, some aircraft such as the 172. and 182 have surpassed it now but they are not twin engine. 3) I have not spent a ton of time verifying the statements so I could have the facts wrong (ie: I remember it wrong or they were told wrong.)
      The fact is though there were over 9000 of them built and it was arguably a very popular plane for all sorts of missions. I’ll retract my overall statement about this though as I honestly have not spent a ton of time researching that aspect. Sorry if I mistated anything and perhaps someone else can step up and offer more accurate facts.

      @@nizexlizzy No need for any type of apology. Beautiful aircraft, that flies even better. Friend of the local aviation circle where I grew up restored one and painted it in the orange and white navy scheme. It was beautiful, and you could eat a meal on any square inch of it, it was so clean.

    Turf runway, What takeoff and landing min. do you go by? Sea level or close.

    • @nizexlizzy
      @nizexlizzy  5 років тому

      Not really sure what you're asking me. If you're asking the minimum length runway I'll land on then 2500 is the shortest I've done. It takes off and lands in about 1700' comfortably.

    • @soaring16
      @soaring16 5 років тому

      @@nizexlizzy That's exactly what I was asking. Thanks. My business partner and I owned a Beech 18 for doing FAA airport work over 30 years ago. We could pack everything we needed for short maintenance trips and even slept in it a few times. However, all our work was out of paved airports with plenty of runway. Didn't know how turf effected the figures I asked about. Regret getting rid of it. Normal maintenance actually was fun.

    • @nizexlizzy
      @nizexlizzy  5 років тому

      Bob Bradley Yeah, it is the primary reason I fly slower planes on all my trips. I’d rather fly something simple that I can work on than get something faster that I have to constantly take to the shop. No matter how much they cost they all still have to get worked on the same amount. Just different price tags when the work is finished. :-)

    Recycled oil been open to the dust in the hanger, serious, I have worked on these and other radials, dc3,dc4.north American Harvard. I think I spotted an Aero commander in the background

    • @nizexlizzy
      @nizexlizzy  5 років тому +1

      Yes, it is a 680FP Commander and the oil is not open to dust in hanger or otherwise. It drains into closed oil containers and then poured directly back into the engine.

      I already had the 6k version for my Twin Commander but if I had to buy just for 18 I'd probably recommend getting the next larger version. Mine has zero problem pulling my 18 around but it is close to max capacity.
