There's the Leso from Sknote, Stereo PWM compressor. Never heard it, but it exists :)
Nice video, as always!
ART just released the updated version of the old MXR rack!
Thank you so much for this playlist. Exactly what I needed.... compression school! Comprehensive and easy to understand. 😎
the pwm501 is superb, outdid my vca my 1176 an opto, just works, vox bass killer
No one talk about this details. You are the only one Covers any point in audio engineering
I;ve been using my STC8 since 2010. It is a great Compressor! Sound really nice in everything. At this moment I am writing a PDF about types of Compressors and was researching what other models of PWM compressors have been released besides the STC8. . I had just found the EMT156, the Italian SKNotes with the model Injured, the Great River Electronics with its PW - 501.
This has been a great series on compression! Thanks, David.
I've known about compressors for years. But, if you could see a graph of what I've known for the past 20 years and what I've learnt from this channel in the last 6 months it would look like a reversed 'L'. Shit, I even talk like someone who knows a bit about compressors, now. By the way, the lunch box racks I've seen are quite expensive, are there any budget ones out there?
Acustica audio has the emulation of the STC 8 in the Jade suite. They also have Pye in the Veridian suite, and a special pwm sampled hardware for nebula called Mantis.
Thanks x the info!
Hi David,
Soundrops has a Nebula library with a pwm plug-in compressor in it called Mantis 2. Never used it but it's the only soft emulation that I know.
dave hill designs titan compressor is also PWM with color options. A bit more affordable then the stc but only mono,,so not really.
Great as usual, very informative!
Thank you. Very interesting for me.
With your new color scheme (new place looks great btw), this shot looks like you added a B&W filter, but only kept your db meter lights, skin and Neve knobs in color haha. It's a no filter filter.
Now we have the Hazelrigg
Re: feedback vs feedforward compression, I never hear of people doing this, but it's worth bearing in mind that you can always turn a typical feedforward comp into a feedback comp by multing its outs to its sidechain ins.
The only thing you have to know when doing this is that the ratio will be limited to a maximum of 2:1, if the comp already had inf:1 as the max in FF mode. If the max ratio in FF mode was less than inf:1, the maximum ratio in FB mode will be less than 2:1. Because of the changed ratios, the gain-reduction meters probably won't show you the correct numbers either. The threshold value will also be completely changed as well (IIRC), but that's easy to dial in by ear.
@@nj1255 I can't get my head around the logic of that right now, but I'll take your word for it - maths is not my strong point! 😆So if that's the case, presumably the same would be true of any compressor even if it is designed to have a FF/FB option (eg Neve Portico 543 / 5043)?
I think the blue 19" rack mount MXR Limiter is pwm also.
there is Mantis for nebula, it should be the stc sampled-emulated, and acustica audio Jade compressor...and kotelnikov it should be a pwm concept
Hello David! Sorry cuz i write over here, but i have 1 question "off topic". I have some issuse to understand the "buffer size" topic with my sound card. I have a Focusrite Saffire 26, and my buffer size is only "2048" but i see orher ppl with more then 4096. How can i increse this ? I need to buy orther soundcard, or? idk. In my pc i have i7 3770 and 16giga rami, but when i open task manager my PC use 5-6 giga and 30-40% cup? My problem is when i mixing and i try to oversampling some plugin, the buffer size is to low (u know what i mean) .... !? I dont found any topic about this subs on the internet. Can u make some "ask rapid video" please about this, or, replay this com? Please? ....
(sorry cuz i dont know to write very well in eng)
Thanks a lot!
up up up :)
Hey David! Any update on PWM Compressors? Any new Analog or Plugin emulations since it's been 4 over years you did this video and no other engineers ever talk about them .
Not really, very few designs PWM. DW Fern is a hybrid Tube/PWM which I don't think I mentioned
Please do a review of analog obssesion plugins....I think they are great plugins but extremely under rated !
Ciao! Neve Portico 2 in alternativa?
Thank David!
First one here! Thanks for this series. Has been very insightful.
D.W. Fearn VT7 is PWM as I understand it (I'm not a techie tho, just an operator, so could be wrong about that)
Pwm is what does the gain reduction, in a class a tube path
@@mixbustv yeah man, thanks....I gathered that. And thanks for your channel....have been enjoying a few of your videos this evening. You do a real nice job!
@@mixbustv and what i was saying was that the D.W. Fearn VT7 is another example of PWM type of compression
@@davewestner yes, I was simply adding info
@@mixbustv thank you sir!
Mantis2 for Nebula Player by Acustica Audio. You MUST try it!
Sorry Sounddrops with two d's
Thanks for the entire vid series, David... excellent info on hardware AND plug ins. Regarding Pye compressor clones/emulations... I did a quick search and found a hardware clone by POM in the UK: www.pompye.com Have you heard of this one? Might try that Waves plug.
U just have 2b a electronic engeneer not a rocket scientist😉
There's the Leso from Sknote, Stereo PWM compressor. Never heard it, but it exists :)
Nice video, as always!
@@mixbustv Sry David, but it's not. I know they had an PWM kit a while ago, but that was called MS4.
