My son who is 18 is passionate about railways in general, the travelling as well as the rolling stock. He’s such a rail ‘geek’ that even in a drama for example he can tell if the coaches or trains are right for the route & era.
@soiung toiue due to a few reasons involving legal issues, lack of available rolling stock, maintenance issues - the company who runs this train only have one suitable set of coaches, and all their locomotives are on average about 40 years old, so reliability is a major issue when compared to the more modern trains of the avanti competition
That chap hit the nail on the head when he said the joy and the comfort has been taken out of rail travel these days. And don't forget the extortionate prices they are charging for that lack of joy and comfort. I loved travelling on the railways when I was a kid but now I simply cannot afford to.
I'm not one of those "back in my day" kind of people, but this train is just classy, even in 2022. Those seats look so much better than anything currently on the rails. The best we get in my area these days are 159s. They're pretty good, but these look even better.
Yes for a DMU the 159s, made of course by BREL, are awesome with their refined sounding Diesel engines under every carriage, so much more refined than the `Thames Turbo' Class 165s. The Class 165s can sound better if the Voith torque converter is given time to engage (presumably in notch 1) before further notching up is carried out but few drivers have the engineering feel to do this, resulting in them sounding like a railbus (the engine noisily revving up before being tied down by the torque converter and the train accelerating away).
The WRL Wairarapa Line ...100 km from Wellington , through the 8.3 km Rimutaka tunnel and on the Masterton does the 95 min (!) trip using refurbished ( and regauged, of course) Mk 2 carriages. As someone who plays a lot of Train Simulator, one of my most favourite liveries is the Intercity Swallow livery, along with Network Southeast, that is so cool!
Excellent video 👍 The class 87s are one of the best design of electric locomotive there has ever been, and after they were withdrawn by Virgin Trains in 2004/2005, most of them were exported to Bulgaria, where they continue to work freight services
I remember travelling on the Intercity service back in the 90s when I was about 5 or 6 years old from Norwich to London Liverpool Street when they used to have MK2 coaches and they had Intercity seat Reservation paper ticket back then. I would like to try out the Intercity Charter train maybe in the New year. 👍
Thanks, Geoff - you met my son Maxim on his way to setting up a show in Manchester's Theatre Land. He travels all over the UK doing this (and doing what he calls 'Load Outs' at the end of a 'run'.) Nice one! Keep 'em coming! Michael.
Genuinely considering travelling down to London just to catch this. Takes me back to my childhood on these from London to Wolverhampton (ironically on a Friday night). Got to be done again!
@@geofftech2 firstly OMG the legend has replied! Secondly I think I might have to convince my partner to take a Friday in London (we live in Notts so if I don’t tell her it’s solely to catch a train to Wolves I might get away with it)
Slidey windows? Slammy doors? Former GA coaches?! Heritage locomotives?! ALL INTERCITY BRANDING?!? Ahhh this is magic!! The fact they are former GA coaches is special to me, given my main experience of loco-hauled Mk3 Intercity trains was Class 90s on the GEML between London and Norwich! I saw some pictures of this service, but how remiss of me, I honestly thought it was merely a one-off railtour! I'm definitely doing a trip of this ^_^ Incidentally, if LSL or anyone else wants to do something similar with an original HST set, down the GWML or up the ECML, I'll be there in a heartbeat... xD
I remember these locomotives and rolling stock first time around it's incredible to see them back in action again on the WCML. The MK3 coaches are possibly the best coaches ever built and knock the socks off of all other modern stock for ride and comfort. Hard to believe they are over 40 years old. Let's gone this is a success.
Yes a great nostalgic train 😆 it’s fantastic seeing the young ones loving the 87s and fabulous coaches 🤣 Piccadilly is one of my local stations back in my train spotting days in the 70s so I can remember the transformation from old to new on the west coast main line 🤩 Great video as always Geoff 👍🏻
Thank-you so much for this video Geoff. This really was the train of my childhood. I was born less than 300 yards from the line in Stafford and grew up in a house with a direct view of the line at Rodbaston , south of Penkridge. Watched the trains go by as I did the washing up from the age of six, most drawn by 8Fs in those days I think. I saw the first electric loco - and its internals through plexiglass - at Stafford station, must’ve been in ‘63 or ‘64. My first journey on my own by train from Stafford to London was to go to the ‘69 motor show Earls Court. Not the kind of journey you forget.
Night riviera is all power doors now - slammy ones aren't permitted on TOC-run services bc of accessibility regulations (which are definitely a good thing).
@@aspen.as6 yeh the droplight windows have additional pins in them, and I believe they are depressed at the same time the central door locks get released so the windows can not be fully lowered until stationary
This is the train of my youth. I grew up in Hatch End and could very definitely hear the WCML from my back garden. 10 and 11yo me would have trainspotted 87002 from the trackside on many an Easter or half term holiday. Student me would have most likely been taken by Royal Sovereign from Watford Junction to Liverpool Lime Street The toilet is definitely the same but I suspect the water pump has been upgraded from dribble Thank you for the memories Geoff and Paul
I used these carriages growing up in east anglia. The stress and responsibility of opening a slammy door at the station as a teenager was something I never thought I’d miss. (It was the sliding of the window and leaning out to use the handle that scared me the most)
I used to travel on the standard class slamdoor InterCity trains going to and from boarding school in the early 90s. They were hauled by class 86s though. The buffet car often wasn't nice like that one; it was a rattly Mk 1 car.
Great Video. My dad worked for the railways and once a year we would go on holiday to ither Cardiff, Bristol and sometimes Redding, that was the days of steam, and the carriages were corridor carriages, I would wander the full length of the train, The doors were slamy doors and the windows had leather straps to lower and lift them. The smell of the steam engines was something else, if I encounter that smell now it takes me straight back to my childhood. Ahhh wonderful memories!!
As someone who spent each and every school holiday travelling between Liverpool and Edinburgh to see extended family, this video brought back some amazing memories.
Fantastic trip report Geoff! So want to take this train service while it’s still in operation. I grew up on MK3 coaches on western region, but occasionally took a train north from Euston to Manchester and beyond. Loved the 86’s and 87’s, such a different experience to the diesel 47’s and 50’s I was used to. Seeing the intercity livery and gorgeous seats hit the nostalgic button, but the door slam and slidey windows brought a smile to my face, as did your reaction to them!
That's really cool that they're essentially running a service, but dedicated to enthusiasts and those fond of the type and /or livery essentially. It looks absolutely superb
Oh wow!! I am SO using this next time I have to go to or from London on a Friday. It's about the same cost as my current Standard Class single fare, but with First Class seating and....holds breath....Slidey down windows, a handle and Slammy Doors!! It's just all TOO much. Fantastic. I shall DEFINITELY be supporting this excellent charter train endeavour.
I’m 3rd generation RailwayMan and I also grew up on travelling on the EBW (EUS-BHM-WVH) services and when I eventually joined British Rail 👍🏻 I did a stint as a Signaller on the Trent at Lichfield Trent Valley (WCML) where every day its was Intercity mk2, mk3, cl86, cl87 & cl90. Thundering pass my Box
Ive travelled Glasgow-London so many times over the last 40 years..... the sound of a slammy-door is sorely missed, as that was the sound of high days and holidays
Thanks Geoff, great nostalgia. It was good to see the young guys "flailing" and "appreciating the thrash" just what i sued to do 30 years ago! Bring back the class 37s and 20s!
Guy with the glasses makes a brilliant point, I’ve never experienced a train like this, having only been used to the “cattle-nomics” of new stock. I must do this journey at some point.
Brings back memories. Don’t live anywhere near the WCML but have ridden it countless times over the years. Good to see a proper train, so little loco haulage available now. Excellent video Geoff.

That was absolutely magic, brought so many memories back from my late teens and 20s! (Although I have to confess I always struggled with the slammy doors!)
That's fantastic, I haven't ridden in an intercity Mk2 since New Zealand closed it borders and I could no longer catch the train from Wellington to Palmerston North.
I love those carriages, having been a regular Greater Anglia user for many years now... The new GA trains are nice, but quite hard in ride and firm in seats!
Intercity from Liverpool Street to Norwich were some of my favourite travelling days. I'm 33 so I was using the trains to see my old man in suffolk. These were the days.
Two of my favourite UA-camrs in one video! I knew even before you introduced that it was Paul. I have no idea why, but I'm so glad! Simply brilliant and that livery is perfect!
This video made me think back to a 70-ies night journey in a Mk1 compartment, all the way from Scotland to London. And I don't know if there's a connection with the slam doors/sliding windows, but if you take 6x60=360 and then subtract the 6x2=12 you end up with 348 without using a calculator. Aaahh, there's nurse with my hot cocoa !

This has to be done. A load of my school friends and myself used to travel everywhere back in the 80s. We had baker days at our school, I never let on to my parents that we all had these days off. We met at our local station, and off we went. This brings all those memories back.
I would love to see more collabirations with you two, my favourite youtube travel channels. Maybe do a video on a plane trip with Paul? I'm definately gonna book a ticket on this route, will bring back so many teenage memories.
Great too see at work like you Geoff, loving the return of the slam doors and pull down windows! Harrow Boy like Paul and unlike him, didn’t hide and loved the 86 and 8s thundering through Wealdstone on my journey home from school on the local trains to Hatch End.
This has to be my favourite train livery. It just takes me back to my childhood and my first memories of trains in the late 80’s early 90’s when me and my Mum used to travel from Liverpool Lime Street to Taunton a couple of times a year to visit family in Somerset.
What a joy! I second the comments about seat comfort, it's maddening that we have such poor comfort in comparison. Also, great to see such enthusiastic youngsters, are trains cool at last?
Old stuff just looks better. My favorite part seeing that "bashing" is still a thing over there in the UK. Not something that ever was a thing in the US. That being said, how I wish a could flail and window hang behind some Amtrak P42s. Awesome video Geoff!
Great vid, the old livery is a classic. Once upon a time before teaching, I looked after exhibition stands and shopfitting at Royal Doulton, the company PR department got in touch one day ,to say a carriage was being named Sir Henry Doulton, it was being named at Stoke on the down run,it was a first class carriage, MK3 so it was at the Euston end of the formation, it'd be outside the overall roof of Stoke station, which incidentally is probably the finest example of Victorian co axial planning in the country. About an hour before the ceremony our shopfitting team laid the red carpet for the Doulton chairman and directors to stand on, fortunately it wasn't raining, happy days.
Slam doors are now a heritage thing??? But what a great nostalgia trip, comfortable seats with a buffet and no overcrowding. Great to see Paul in the video too.
Worth it just for the comfy seats, the open windows you can see out of, presumably, not being bombarded by constant announcements or getting whacked over the head every five minutes by passers by.
A fantastically brilliant video Geoff! Brought back many many memories of traveling up and down the WCML especially in the "Golden Era" of the 1980's, I have journeyed a couple times on the Manchester Pullman and to see a taste of those times in the interior of this train was truly wonderful--where's the table service? This is how all WCML services should be, proper seats, big windows, Mk IIIb stock and a class 87 all in glorious Intercity executive livery! What a flashback! So glad to hear the Friday Only service has been extended giving younger folk as well as us oldies a chance to experience proper train travel, I really really hope this service will be permanent and the possibility of another day added on! It's time to get our 87's back from Bulgaria (especially my personal favorite 87009 City Of Birmingham!) rescue some rakes of Mk IIIb's and DVT's, bin those awful Pendolino's and bring back the glory times of proper trains, oh to hear the tune of 87's back at Euston--even dig out some 90's too! A real taste of better times and such a treat! 🙂
How fab - decent comfortable seating that matches the windows, bags of space, decent tables, a walk-up buffet car. Great motive power and the best ever livery - what's not to like - Glad you two met up as follow you both!
Toilets for sure upgraded from what I remember! There was a cloth towel roll dispenser that would probably break a bunch of health codes now, and a button on the floor that you'd step on to get water to come out of the sink, and sometimes it worked! I also remember as a kid stealing all the little tablets of soap from the toilet! There for sure was never a push button flush. Great video Geoff, love your stuff! Currently watching the videos all the way from Hawaii! Used to take the 87's on MK3 from Euston to Preston as a kid! Always remember the smell of cigars in the smoking coach at the back :)

Its always great when two of your favourite UA-camrs appear in the same video.
Two of my favourite UA-camrs in one video! I knew even before you introduced that it was Paul. I have no idea why, but I'm so glad! Simply brilliant and that livery is perfect!
Now that's what you call a comfy train ride! Those seats looked plush Geoff, I definitely would have nodded off. Thanks Geoff. 😎
Geoff, the video production of late is insane! B-roll especially. Bravo!
Aaahh, there's nurse with my hot cocoa !
yes yes i did many times london liverpool street class 31 mk1 carriages to cambridge.....most times was class 37s..there was also lots class 31s,,,the journey was like going to glasgow...lol.....i did cambridge from kings cross took 4hours once,,,,when the track was only eletric to royston...then you change to a dmu....the eletric slam door failed,,,,the dmu also failed,,,,.was some epic 54mile journey.....was a murphy laws journey....what can go wrong ....will go wrong.......was a sunday journey the all track repairs get on rail buses helped ..we should of just walked to cambridge😀😀😀
i love slidey windows slammy doors
These sets are incredibly nostalgic - They have two GreaterAnglia Class 90s, and a class 86 too. It's a lovely idea, and I hope they expand it!
@Chiltern Transport Productions It did!
What a joy! I second the comments about seat comfort, it's maddening that we have such poor comfort in comparison.
Also, great to see such enthusiastic youngsters, are trains cool at last?
I love these old trains. So nostalgic.
Nice peakperiod special service, hopefully to be extended... Thanks for the video
Old stuff just looks better. My favorite part seeing that "bashing" is still a thing over there in the UK. Not something that ever was a thing in the US. That being said, how I wish a could flail and window hang behind some Amtrak P42s. Awesome video Geoff!
hi, great video, long live the 87s at last someone has seen sense, get rid of those star trek type trains, with ironing board seats !
I love it when two of my favourite UA-camrs come together!
Omg Geoff and Paul, great to see you do a video together on what is clearly such a shared passion 😁
Geoff you'll be happy to hear my daily commute bus passes the elbow window test with flying colours!
Slidey windows, slammy doors and Paul Lucas - this has made my evening!!
Great to see the young folk at Manchester still as enthusiastic as I was back in the late 1970s when I got interested in rail.
SLIDEY WINDOWS, SLAMMY DOORS and Paul, amazing!
Amazing to meet you Geoff! Great video as always :)
Hi Geoff, Great video, good to meet you on board..… and my little one, she did that Rubix cube in 1 min 38s..
