It kinda had a good ending of you really think about it. No he couldn't save him, but if he had there was guarantee for them to be together as people's paths change. Instead he is in a time loop where he will travel back in time every 15 years, spend three weeks with him. The thing is someone told me that's not a time loop. But it literally is. Because he gets the letter which prompted the visit. Every 15 years.
My theory is he maybe only had a day when he was back in his own time without him before it started looping.
