✿ Veganlovlie Recipes / Tamarind Chutney - Mauritian Vegan : Today’s recipe is a spicy, sweet and sour chutney made with sun-kissed ingredients like tamarind and chillies. ✿ FULL PRINTABLE RECIPE ▶ veganlovlie.com/apple-tamarind-chutney-recipe/
I am using tamarind paste that comes in a block. It is usually available at any Asian or Indian store (or get it online, link below).
I drew inspiration for this apple tamarind chutney from culinary traditions of a spicy tamarind compote known as ‘takkar’ in Mauritius.
Jaggery is my preferred sugar in this recipe. You can find jaggery at Asian or Indian stores and also online.
    Where to buy online -
    Jaggery:
    US - amzn.to/2avOrgw
    Canada - amzn.to/2aiiOZf
Palm Sugar (you can also use this instead of jaggery):
    US - amzn.to/2aoSUi3
    Canada - amzn.to/2axzZRP
    Tamarind (in a block):
    US - amzn.to/2aDH0BC
    Canada - amzn.to/2ayzbzG
Tamarind (paste without seeds, use only 2 tablespoons in the recipe):
    US - amzn.to/2aoOo3o

We hope you'll find out about the taste. :) Tamarind is just one of these unique ingredients that has a whole world of flavours all to itself. We recently bought some fresh tamarind and Kevin and I have been eating them out of the pods just like kids. lol. So good!

Veganlovlie | Vegan Fusion-Mauritian Cooking I have a fondness for tamarind because when I was a baby my mother's best college friend, a lovely Peruvian woman, nicknamed me Tamarindo, the Spanish word for tamarind, in a play on my name, Tamara : )

Absolutely adored watching this. Never used jaggary or tamarind before - now you have got me really curious... in fact, you often seem to highlight completely new ingredients for me. Very exciting. This is a whole new take on chutney for me. I am inspired :)

I think jaggery and tamarind are definitely ingredients to explore. I love the complex flavours of tamarind; it adds so much depth to sauces or other dishes. I hope you'll get to try it. As for jaggery, I sometimes even eat it as candy (when no one's watching! lol). ;)

Just picturing you sneaking the jaggery - I would so be the same lol!!!

I like to keep a small jar of this at all times in the fridge. It goes really well with so many foods and even as a sauce base with some stir fries veggies. I hope you'll give it a try. :)

Yummy, this reminds me of our mauritian 'takkhar' (not sure how to write this) :) . Will need to make this soon! It would be an amazing and delicious accompaniment to a lot of my meals, instead of eating the other store-bought sauces :D

    • @Veganlovlie
      @Veganlovlie 8 років тому

Yes, you can use it as a stir-fry sauce or instead of using ketchup. Works great in some sauces too. ❤❤

I suggest adding a table spoon of vinegar to prolong its shelf life, otherwise great taste can be felt in advance of preparing the same.

What will be the shelf life if this Chutney kept outside the fridge in room temperature ?

Hi Tanya, I don't have a recipe yet for the samosas. I am still working on perfecting the dough for this one. But stay tuned, it is something we intend to share in the future. :)
