I agree, and the sirens are not used for just tornadoes they can be used for civil defense too, I hope I only hear that signal during monthly tests

With tech not working my phone never received a emergency alert for a tornado.

What is your phone is off? What if you left it somewhere or don't have the money for a phone? This was a stupid decision by the township. Redundancy is the key to keeping people safe.

I think it was a bad idea about how Kalamazoo decommissioned their entire siren system. They should at least kept a few of their sirens in service.

This will ensure a high body count when the next F3, F4 or F5 hits Kalamazoo.

It's true, because it's just a matter of time before a big one hits SW Michigan again.

@@toneyfamily1398 More death means more money for them and big business, they are counting on more people to die. It's an engineered tragedy to push voters to get to the polls.

New tech is fine as long as the network stays online. Always rely on a backup, which they don't have now!

I’m from Michigan and honestly storms are powerful enough to knock out cell towers cable lines only thing that can warn you of a tornado is warning sirens because sirens can be very powerful

Absolutely stupid decision on their part! Now what? Are we going to discontinue fire alarm systems because of technology? Think about this, what would you do if you were outside alone with no cell phone? 😱

This'll make the grim reaper's job easier. Higher body counts, more destruction. What about the elderly folks? Elderly people don't have access to smartphones! Shame on the people who are doing this!

There was a tornado close to Kalamazoo county last year and I had absolutely NO idea because I was at work. I knew it was storming really bad of course, but when I checked my phone on my break, I had nearly 30 missed calls from Multiple family members and friends who were trying to warn me and I didn't even know because we do not have tornado sirens in Kalamazoo anymore. There were alerts sent out to students on campus, but what about the rest of the people?
    Dumbass decision.

I know this was almost 4 years ago but let me break these down as parts to give you a better understanding why this is such a bad idea.
0:36 | No, that is bullshit and you know it. I'm a big believer in safety equipment and when people believe a smartphone can outdo something like that, that's when I call the Karen Alarm. In all seriousness the reason I call that "Bullshit" is because what are the odds if your power goes out and so does the internet, then what?
1:44 | In his opinion yes it might be, but in reality it is not. & I'll tell you why. Money. That's right, Money. Not everyone is gonna afford a cell phone, and not everyone owns a weather radio either.
2:09, No no. That's not, No 😅. You see, I'm into this siren hobby where I learn and document, I actually hear these things every month. The Mile radius is not just 1 mile. The siren you see in that pinned clip is a Federal Signal 2001-130, those range at 130 dB's at 100 Feet and can travel up to 2 miles sometimes 2 in a half miles. Just 9 of those would've been fine. Outdoor warning devices may cost a lot but it's also about keeping people safe getting rid of them, one of the things that can go wrong is that the warning could be issued while or right as the power goes out, not everyone will get the warning because for one the internet could go out and two if the storm is already in area, it's also possible for radio transmitteres or cell towers to knocked down by the storm from a tornado. Remember, Cell phones are not the future. They're just pieces of technology to help people be safe than sorry, they're not a replacement. Same goes for weather stations that can also go out which makes both the NWS impossible in those areas.
One of the things you should really understand is that sirens don't always need power directly to power it, a siren company like Federal Signal have been making battery backup sirens for past 30 years. That's right, Battery backup. They'll work, even if the power goes out. This decision is in no way better, it's just another way to put more residents at risk. It's also another of how you can end up getting sued for lack of warning devices because even then, Cell phone alerts aren't always a reliable source as sometimes they can also be delayed. Just saying, this was broadcasted almost 4 years ago but it's never too late.

They should still keep them and if they fail then people have their cell phones.
