Mercury / Tohatsu 5HP Water Pump Impeller Installation Procedure 2007 ME5M 4ST

- Water pump maintenance for your small outboard motor can be done at home in your garage or shop. Once you have ordered the proper replacement impeller part number from websites like boats.net or marineengine.com and removed the lower unit from the outboard, the old water pump impeller is removed by unbolting the water pump housing and sliding it up and off of the drive shaft.
Be careful to not lose the small metalic key in the notch of the drive shaft that fits into the slot of the impeller.
Watch the video to see an example of how an impeller was improperly installed and see the technique to make sure the impeller fins are oriented in the correct direction when you install yours.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent explanation, good job.
Thank you.
James your videos are the S HIT!,but could you please take your time with the explanations?Keep on posting!!!
You gave us half the procedure. How does it all come apart and all back together again?
Thanks so much for doing this. Great video and super helpful 🤜🏼
Very nice details. I am getting ready to replace mine and this was very informative. Thank you!
Many thanks for this excellent advice
I have 5 HP outboard Mercury it 1991 have not use it about 15 years I need to know about my seals should I change them to have watched your videos about water pump
seals are most likely fine, and do not need to be replaced unless they are failing a leak test.
how do you do leak test
+Del Bryan Drain the gearcase oil and then pressurize the gearcase up to 8 psi maximum. See that it holds pressure without leaking. use a soapy water mixture to locate any leak sources. trickiest part is making a pump fixture out of parts from home depot. take a look at this video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/ONyF5LtvQOQ/v-deo.html
I cant get darn lower unit off....2 bolts and shift linkage are off...what else coud be holding it together
Do you have to change the gaskets?
All good mate but how do you feed the shaft back into the power head. Is there a procedure ie moving the shift lever. I cant seem to get it all the way in.Thanks.
Thank you so much. This was very helpful. I have replaced the impeller but find it impossible to refit the lower unit and get the gear shaft and drive shaft back in place. Do you have a video showing how to do that? I have tried everything - all gear positions, rotating prop/drive shaft and gear shaft. Is there a trick to this? I can't find a video anywhere that shows the correct procedure - it's driving me crazy!!!
did you ever find out how im having the same problem!
im having the same exact problem. can't seem to fit it back in. did you ever get it to work?
im having the same problem
YAY, I finally succeeded!!!
Sorry but I don't have any photos or video but here's what worked for
me...
I removed the rubber seal at the top of the shaft cover (where the gear
shaft goes through).
Then I slid the cover over the drive and gear shafts until I could see the
brass clamp through the inspection hole. It was better to tighten the brass
clamp just enough so it wouldn't fall off. I then hooked a piece of wire through
the inspection hole, around the shaft above the clamp and back out through the inspection hole. This prevented the clamp from sliding up the shaft and made it
easier to wiggle the gear shaft into place through the top hole. Once the gear
shaft was correctly located, I tightened the brass clamp and removed the wire
then refit the rubber seal over the gear shaft.
I have used this method three times now and it works like a charm every
time so I hope it works for you.
Unfortunately, all my frustration and brainstorming was in vain as my
perfectly running motor was stolen!
Hi Nick,
Can you help. Having same problem driving me crazy. The gear shift rod, l can get that in line to come through. It's just the splines, will not line up what so ever. Just a knocking against something sound. And lm about 1-5 inches away. Just won't marry into each other. Feels like something in the way lm going crazy to.
i have a 9.8 Nissan, how do you remove one of the two pins on the shifting rod, without potentially bending the rod, if you use a hammer to knock out one of the pins
also forgot coleman put's out a motor that looks identical to this is it the same motor by chance just different badging.
The hardest part is putting the lower unit back on. So far every guy that has done this job on video, has skipped that part. 🤣🤣🤣
Are these motors made by mercury or are they made by another company for mercury aka: cheap knock offs these motors aren't cheap are they worth the money. are they mercury
These are made by other companies and Mercury puts their decal on them.
Seems pretty deceptive considering the cheapest I've found one for was $ 1500.00 was considering buying one as I'm a big fan of mercury motors what is your opinion one this motor doesn't seem worth the price to me if it's not a Mercury.
I think new outboards are way way way overpriced. You end up paying for a brand name. My opinion is that the major dealers are outsourcing motor design and manufacturing to China and then slapping their label on the side to make major profit.
The Evinrude 6HP looks exactly like the Mercury 6HP...

Wanna know what I use on my john boat? I have a 1958 Johnson 10HP outboard. Starts on the first pull every time. All metal construction -- even the cover.
No doubt I've got one mercury I bought new few years ago 60 hp efi 4 stroke for my bass tracker but yeah for the old john boat think I'll go your advise go old won't go wrong was looking to up size from the old game fisher outboard but new isn't always better thank you.
