Inspirational as always, Joel, thank you so much for sharing. I kinda stumbled upon your channel a couple of weeks back when UA-cam suggested I watch your time lapse video where you created the little pond. From there I watched the 3 part series, and thought "wow, this is so cool, I've gotta see what else he's uploaded" :o). I get so much enjoyment from watching your videos and from reading your book (yes, I ordered your book and it's brilliant!). Thank you for taking the time to help educate and inspire us all to do our bit for nature.

I am absolutely thrilled you're enjoying the channel and so pleased they're of help. I hope that again this shows that wild doesn't mean messy or unkempt and even a relatively formal garden such as this can bring 100% benefit to so many insects, birds and amphibians. Great video, Joel! Fantastic garden make-over that looks very inviting that's for sure👍👏! It is amazing how much planning work goes into it, and the end result speaks for itself. I will be renovating our back rockery garden in a couple of months that has been more or less destroyed by mud and silt due to a flooding weather event in Feb 2019 and now kangaroos that have dug up the gravel path to make a "bed" to sleep in the shade as the fence was destroyed🙂. Have a great weekend.
The wildlife certainly make the most of your garden! ;) Thank you so much for your kind comment and constant support, it doesn't go unnoticed! Good luck with the rockery and Kangaroo "motel" - take good care out there, hope you're getting some respite from that heat - best wishes to you both, Joel
Thank you Clive - it certainly came together just as planned, but mainly it's a haven for both nature and the client so a win win as they say :) Thank you for your support, as always - Joel
Whatever the budget, keep at it Amy - the rewards will soon come, wildlife isn't too fussed about looks, it's the food, breeding space and shelter that's paramount in any wildlife garden - I'm here if you need any advice :) Best wishes, Joel
I will do! And thank you so much for your support, I have lots more "before and after" garden videos and am going back to visit them this year so I can show the changes all in one video, like this one :) Best wishes to you and yours - Joel
I love the work you do. I only worry that we forget the larger wildlife that also need access to our gardens such as hedgehogs, foxes, deers etc. We ned a much larger holistic perspective if we want to protect our native wildlife
Great job Joel, amazing planning and execution on getting all that to fit in one garden. One question, how did you overhang the decking over pond with the posts in the water yet keep the pond watertight? I'd love to copy it!
Hello there - thank you so much, it's all part of the design work and planning - something I talk about in the book. 💖🕊️🌴😊Loving this build, the birds, everything so peaceful, my fav part the insect hotel & "planting time" I just have one question, how long did it take?! 💖😁God bless you all
Hello again :) This took circa 4 weeks to complete, with the employees help of course, this doesn't include the site visit, prep and design of course but 4 weeks from the day we got stuck in, until the day I could step back and see my plans and design quite literally come to life :) Remember... wild doesn't have to be messy... best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton, 😁 I think it would be great if you filmed the design process do u sketch it out? Or use software? Either one would be interesting to watch! Thanks for the reply God bless you all 💖🕊️💕🌸
@@SereneSoakingSounds I'll try to find time for that :) it's coming up to the most busy period, many ponds to install and more gardens to convert (or revert!) - it always involves a site visit, assessing the whole area, what may be there of benefit already, what can be incorporated into a new design, the likely weather, the sun that is cast across the garden, the planting of course - just thinking about the maximum benefit for both nature and the owners alike. Then it's some idea sketching and then finally the CAD drawings to ensure it's all executed in the available space and above all the design gives the clients what they want in the garden and of course aesthetically too, the plans are always fluid so that the clients can alter them to their needs if needed - it rarely happens but the space is for them and nothing is started until everyone is happy :) The garden you see pictured in the "Live Streams" background was featured on BBC Gardener's World - I'm yet to upload that, but it won't be long :)
Hi James! utmost apologies for the delay in responding, I don't seem to be getting all the notifications re comments and am having to trawl the videos to ensure I'm acknowledging everyone. Thanks Kuan - it's a beautiful pond you have there. I love Koi but they're not suitable for the wildlife ponds I install, rather detrimental to the wildlife the ponds encourage, but as I said, they are the most beautiful fish and a joy to watch - I've just subscribed after watching the koi pond video :) Best wishes, Joel

So I took the reins and decided to upload some of the older projects, more detailed and with better footage to accompany the new videos and work I've been uploading since May of last year, and the support has been fantastic - consider this channel an upgrade ;) Unfortunately, I'm not sure the client would want me to divulge the spend on this one but it's probably not as expensive as you think :) You can always send me an email to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com if you're in need of a consultation, advice or would like a plan/design or even installation - I really appreciate the support Tommy, take good care and stay safe where you are - best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton thanks for the reply. That's not a problem. When I've got the forever house I'll be planning the garden and I dont doubt you'll hear from me. Loving the new channel and frequent uploads, keep it up.
I'm loving your videos Joel. Iam just starting out as a career change to gardening and with my environmental biology and forest school leader bsckground, id like to specialise on wildlife gardens if i can. Do you have a specialist supplier for native wildlife friendly plants that you can recommend.
Hi there Andrea, I don't think it was mentioned on this video but if you visit www.wildyourgarden.com we have everything you need for the wildlife garden - plants, seed, pond liners, wildflowers etc - my book is available on the website too if you scroll to the bottom of the home page. Hope this helps, best of luck with everything - Joel
I don’t think I saw you using a pond liner? If you didn’t what did you use? I really want to not use plastic, I made one pond last year (with a liner) and it’s full of wildlife now and I want to eventually add a larger one but I really hate using plastic, any advice for what to do?
Hi Alexandra, most of the urban garden-sized ponds I make are with butyl rubber liner, never plastic - it's recommended by greenpeace as it's made from recycled tyres, aside from that it comes with a lifetime guarantee and the subsoil and fleece on top of the liner ensures longevity. For very large ponds then bentonite clay can be used but it's unfortunately pretty rare to be able to make a water source without some kind of lining - fibre glass ponds eventually crack under UV and of course end up in landfill. If you're in the UK I can help source the butyl liner for you. Sorry I can't help more than that, but I hope this helps a bit - best wishes, Joel
Hi there Donna - many butterflies and bees were attracted immediately and on speaking with the client after, there are many amphibians using the pond as well as the birds who are attracted to the insects and bathing, using the pond too :) Hope you're having a good weekend - best wishes, Joel

Fantastic! Another great garden investment 😍 it's amazing how naturalised it looks after 2 weeks, then at 6 weeks 😎 I love the Cork plant feature (I have a short one). Makes me wish for Spring so the visitors can return 🐸🦎🐞🐌🦋🐛🦗🐜🐝🕷️🦟🦠🌱🌷🌻
Thank you Donna - the client was so pleased and I love how this shows that even in the smaller and urban gardens a nature haven can be achieved, and it's such a wonderful place for taking time out and soaking in nature :) Spring's on it's way - I was up for the sunrise this morning, down the marshes near here, and went back to see a Robin I met yesterday who was incredibly tame, following me. This morning I took mealworms with me.... I'll upload the short video soon :) Stay safe and warm Donna - best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton aww so glad they were pleased with it! Love how everything had to be manageable size to carry through too as machinery isn't always an option 😎 aww look forward to seeing that video! Snow is thawing here finally and new wick for paraffin heaters have arrived so hopefully the polytunnel will be toasty shortly ready for some trellis painting. Take care and see you tomorrow 😊
@@donnageorge-henderson5419 I have a feeling you rarely sit down! ;) It's sunny today here and lovely skies but the temperature was -4 when I was out this morning. Good luck with the painting and look forward to seeing you tomorrow - Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton ha, yeah, I never sit still, always something to do (getting an early start before better weather so then I can install and do the warmer jobs that need done) 😂 once the garden is sorted, then I can slow down with a cider, firepit, camera and watch the wildlife thrive 😎

Impressive work
Thank you Moha - appreciated :) Best wishes, Joel
Awesome project!! Loved seeing the hard work and the 6week update was so great to see the progress!! Keep up these videos!! Love it!!
Thank you! I surely will do, it's support and encouragement from people like you that really do spur me on and help to make a difference :) There's lots more to come on the channel, I promise! Best wishes, Joel

Wow, I think I got a bit emotional reading that! ;) I don't think people realise what a difference positive and kind comments can make and how encouraging it is for me to continue. I am absolutely thrilled you're enjoying the channel and so pleased they're of help. I hope that again this shows that wild doesn't mean messy or unkempt and even a relatively formal garden such as this can bring 100% benefit to so many insects, birds and amphibians. If you're not aware already I'll be doing a live-stream again this Sunday - I'll upload the short video tomorrow with all the details and hopefully see you there - take good care Debbie, and thank you again :) Best wishes to you and yours, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I just missed your last live-stream and shall try to tune in this Sunday; I'm a technophobe so I'll have to enlist the help of my tech-savvy teenage girls, haha. You are right, wild doesn't have to mean messy. I grew up in the heart of the West Sussex countryside (in the middle of a wood, no less) and we were surrounded by all sorts of wildlife - lots of different insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles and rodents plus some deer, foxes and badgers - it was amazing! My Dad's garden wasn't messy it was just... natural. I miss seeing and hearing it all (so calming) but I hope that this year I will finally be able to start my wildlife garden :o). All the best to you an I hope to see you Sunday.
@@debbieaustin2549 Wow Debbie, what a lucky girl! Nature never quite leaves you if you experience it as a child. Your description of growing up in such an environment is great, I can see every part of that garden and it's surroundings. Well done Dad! For Sunday, all you need to do is go to the channel and you'll see the live-stream there at 3pm, it's just the same as watching a video and on the right hand side you'll see there's an option to chat - but do enlist help if you need to :) There's no obligation to join in at all. Stay safe and thank you again for such wonderful support, best wishes - Joel
Great video Joel, keep up the amazing work!
This is fascinating!
Looks fantastic... nice job lads ... quality work joel 👌
Thank you Clive - it certainly came together just as planned, but mainly it's a haven for both nature and the client so a win win as they say :) Thank you for your support, as always - Joel
Good video 👍
Thank you Kim - really appreciate your positive comment :) Best wishes, Joel
Great transformation! ... hoping for similar results in mine, except I have a much smaller budget 😬😂
Whatever the budget, keep at it Amy - the rewards will soon come, wildlife isn't too fussed about looks, it's the food, breeding space and shelter that's paramount in any wildlife garden - I'm here if you need any advice :) Best wishes, Joel
I've just turned my council flat front garden into a wild flower border meadow also animones 🌻 sunflowers its the year of the bee.
This is so good to hear Carl, thank you :) You will be rewarded for doing this with many grateful visitors - best wishes, Joel
Excellent bro I like it so much stay connected
I will do! And thank you so much for your support, I have lots more "before and after" garden videos and am going back to visit them this year so I can show the changes all in one video, like this one :) Best wishes to you and yours - Joel
Nice😊👏👏😊👍
Thanks 🤗I really appreciate your positive comment Muskan, it makes a big difference to me :) Best wishes, Joel
The method of securing those posts is probably a bit lengthy and rather complicated to relay here - but do send me an email to hazelwoodlandscapes@hotmail.com and I'll do my utmost to explain for you :) Best wishes, and keep up that great transformation you've got going on, you'll soon reap the rewards - Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton thanks Joel, will do. Thanks for your replies, much appreciated 👍
Hi Joel thank you for sharing this with us. Could I just ask, is that an MOT like sub base you've used for the wildflower meadow grass?
Hi James! utmost apologies for the delay in responding, I don't seem to be getting all the notifications re comments and am having to trawl the videos to ensure I'm acknowledging everyone. In a short answer, no - this is just subsoil after removing the existing "housing developer" standard turf - hope that helps, best wishes - Joel
Great job! Can you tell me more about the groundcover (sod) that was installed? I've never seen anything like it in the states.
Nice video, Like 57 and Greetings from Italy :)

Beautiful garden, great job! Also would like to share my koi pond here, thanks for anyone interested!

I have been following your work and videos since I came across this one garden on butterfly bros, a fair while back. This is like my dream garden, and without prying to much was hoping you could say what kind of budget you'd need to get something like this?
Keep up the good work and great videos!
Hi Tommy - thanks for this, your support means a lot. Unfortunately that channel has been dormant for over a year and wasn't utilised as much as it should have been.
Haha! Thank you, grateful for your kind words :) Best wishes, Joel
Masha Allah I like 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌷
Thank you so much :) I really appreciate your comment - best wishes to you, Joel
So what did you attract to the garden
Hi there Donna - many butterflies and bees were attracted immediately and on speaking with the client after, there are many amphibians using the pond as well as the birds who are attracted to the insects and bathing, using the pond too :) Hope you're having a good weekend - best wishes, Joel
That guy with the top knot though .😅
Haha! He's a great guy, originally from Poland and a good worker, very funny too - but you must be to wear hair like this ;)
Next time have some real irritating music playing. 😆
The bee hotel is *amazing*!!!!!
The music isn’t 😉
Thanks Katie - can't win 'em all with the music - it seemed apt for this, although there are 3 different tunes (!) in this video - there's no narration so sound isn't needed to see the transformation. If you like bug hotels then stay tuned for one we have just completed on a larger scale in North London recently - will be uploading the video soon. Best wishes, Joel
@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton You’re doing a great job! A *bigger* bee hotel? Can’t wait!
