You explain why its important to cut their nails: Me: my paranoia and anxiety would force me too. Also I'm planning to get a ferret in 4 or something years, when I'm old enough to get a apartment I have been researching ferrets for 2 years now. Thank you.
I found this video very helpful, thank you. I clipped my ferret’s nails for the first time in awhile today. I used to bring her to the vet every two weeks, but it wasn’t very cost effective. Ours are not interested in salmon oil either!! We've tried this method and they find it boring 😭 we mix some with our food for them a few times a week, only a teaspoon worth a week, but that's the only way they will have any 😭😭😭
Wonderful and very educational video! Is the white nail part under the quick part of the quick or is it okay to cut? I couldn’t find info on that and always cut just the tips of the nails as not to risk it 😅
That's a great question! That white portion really does seem like a mystery doesn't it? The white portion is not part of the quick, so you are fine! Think of that portion of the nail as "calloused" and thicker from constant wear. However, leaving a gap from the red quick to your cut is important - you don't want to cut right up to the quick.
You can, but I would recommend the pastes as they usually contain corn syrup which can be very harmful to your ferret and potentially cause illness. Try salmon oil instead.

Hey I have a question ! Can you have a few pieces of untreated wood in their cage and play room so they can rub their nails on it and wear them out gradually ? Of course not replacing the nail cutting but in addition to it
What if you ferret doesn't care about salmon oil, I needed to cut his nails and since I had nothing I had to scruff him and i think that could slow our bonding.
i’m not sure if you found an answer but my ferret likes mayonnaise or egg! i put a little on her belly or put a teaspoon facing outwards in my mouth for her to lick as i trim her nails.
I need to start doing this with my 2-month old soon, but I am terrified about doing it wrong, even after doing the research. I let him dig both outside and in his indoor sandbox, so they get a lot of natural wear, but even so, I can't put it off much longer. Pray for me!

@@venusp1494 my only concern is the bonding I think it’s just because I didn’t take the right precautions and rabbits scared prey animals. ferrets seem less scared and more open to humans being around them so maybe it will be easier and I’m older so I might just get one and really be committed until we are best friends
I have a ferret, but I lost his nail clipper a long while ago, so I need to know what happens if you don't cut there nails in a couple months, and if it's bad for there health in any ways besides the ones listed in the vidio, thank you
i know this comment is old but you never got an answer! ferrets need their nails to be clipped often as they can get uncomfortable as they grow out. they can also end up becoming ingrown if they get too long
As long as you have enough light to see the quick clearly, then yes! In fact, I consider it a bonus to cut their nails while they are sleeping because you get to skip an entire step :)
Good question. The long nails will most likely become uncomfortable for your ferret, and he will scratch at carpets and furniture. This tends to split the nail, and you ferret will get caught on fibers more often, which could result in them panicking for being stuck.
I don't have a ferret (yet) before I get one and try to convenience my mom I want to make sure I know everything and that I am ready and this channel has really been helping me so if you don't have a ferret you should watch this channel.

The Modern Ferret I stay in South Africa. I have been to all my nearby pet shops and vets and have not been lucky enough to find any. I have googled it online it says we have here but the province which I am In can’t be delivered to and they don’t stock it here

my ferret Theo, i put her on my lap on her back, her head facing away and she knows she will get a treat afterwards, then she is clam sometimes and i will just cut her nails, These videos are great for new ferret owners i hope they watch these before they get a ferret.
Our vet cleaned our ferret's ears - it really depends on how knowledgeable they are about ferrets but I am sure they would (don't be afraid to call ahead and ask). Have you tried doing it yourself first using some of the tips mentioned? It's easier with salmon oil, I promise! ♥

I’m watching all these videos wanting a ferret but I did this exact thing with a rabbit a few years ago I thought I knew everything and that it would be easy but it was a disaster and someone else had to take care of him because he hated me and chewed all my things but I still am considering a ferret after all this stuff that happened with that rabbit so I don’t really know if I can not do this again with a ferret or not I will probably just end up not getting one who knows
ferrets are not easy. if you aren’t 100% about getting them, don’t get ferrets.
@@venusp1494 my only concern is the bonding I think it’s just because I didn’t take the right precautions and rabbits scared prey animals. ferrets seem less scared and more open to humans being around them so maybe it will be easier and I’m older so I might just get one and really be committed until we are best friends
I have a ferret, but I lost his nail clipper a long while ago, so I need to know what happens if you don't cut there nails in a couple months, and if it's bad for there health in any ways besides the ones listed in the vidio, thank you
i know this comment is old but you never got an answer! ferrets need their nails to be clipped often as they can get uncomfortable as they grow out. they can also end up becoming ingrown if they get too long
@@venusp1494 Thank you! I recently cut my ferrets nails (I cut it before now too 😂) and its now I know how recently to cut them, thanks!
Is it safe to cut there nails while there in dead sleep mode?
As long as you have enough light to see the quick clearly, then yes! In fact, I consider it a bonus to cut their nails while they are sleeping because you get to skip an entire step :)
Thank you!
Could I use egg york instead salmon oil?
I've never heard of this, you can try it and let me know how it works out? ❤
Excellent.
what if i never cut my ferret's nails?
Good question. The long nails will most likely become uncomfortable for your ferret, and he will scratch at carpets and furniture. This tends to split the nail, and you ferret will get caught on fibers more often, which could result in them panicking for being stuck.
I just rescued a ferret and I've been watching all ur videos. Thank u SO much for ALL the help 💗💗
I don't have a ferret (yet) before I get one and try to convenience my mom I want to make sure I know everything and that I am ready and this channel has really been helping me so if you don't have a ferret you should watch this channel.
Hey modern ferret, what do I do if I don’t get salmon oil in my country
That's a great question. What county are you located in? There may be other types of fish oil that are safe for ferrets or other kinds of oil but I would have to do some research first.
The Modern Ferret I stay in South Africa. I have been to all my nearby pet shops and vets and have not been lucky enough to find any. I have googled it online it says we have here but the province which I am In can’t be delivered to and they don’t stock it here
Hey I have a question ! Can you have a few pieces of untreated wood in their cage and play room so they can rub their nails on it and wear them out gradually ?
my ferret Theo, i put her on my lap on her back, her head facing away and she knows she will get a treat afterwards, then she is clam sometimes and i will just cut her nails, These videos are great for new ferret owners i hope they watch these before they get a ferret.
I love these videos! Thank you!
Glad you like them!!
thank u, this intro, love this
Thanks for watching!
Before watching I think it’s salmon oil on there belly
Thank you for this 🥺 I got my son in October and my sister in law told me his nails are super long and they should be clipped- so this is where I went
Do lava rocks help at all?
Hmmm could you explain? Do you mean for wearing down nails?
Question, will vets cut the nails for you?
Our vet cleaned our ferret's ears - it really depends on how knowledgeable they are about ferrets but I am sure they would (don't be afraid to call ahead and ask). Have you tried doing it yourself first using some of the tips mentioned? It's easier with salmon oil, I promise! ♥
The Modern Ferret oh, I don't have a ferret 😂 Just gathering information to get one when I live on my own!
@@melaniemartinezfan5 You're gonna be a great ferret parent doing all this research! ♥
Are you able to buy nail covers for there nails so they don’t scratch when it’s not time to cut
I wish to have a ferret
Wish on a shooting star!
Just tried this out and it literally is foolproof 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
