    I have few questions because I've been considering a ferret for a LONG long time.
    1. How do you know if a ferret is right for you?
    2. What is the best age to own a ferret?
    3. Is it illegal to own a ferret in NY?

      -there’s no way to know, sometimes you feel it, sometimes you have to get to know eachother.
      -ferrets are not beginner animals. they are high maintenance. i’d say ferrets really aren’t pets for children or young teens. 17~ i’d say.
      -i believe ferrets ARE illegal in NY.

    I found this video very helpful, thank you.
    I clipped my ferret’s nails for the first time in awhile today. I used to bring her to the vet every two weeks, but it wasn’t very cost effective.
    Two things, I clipped a quick and felt terrible. She did bleed for more than 2 minutes but she seems fine now (I put her back in her pen). Those back paws are so tricky!!
    The one thing that your video doesnt help me with is that my ferret won’t touch treats/salmon oil. She’s completely uninterested! I’ve tried EVERYTHING. Any unique suggestions?

    Wonderful and very educational video! Is the white nail part under the quick part of the quick or is it okay to cut? I couldn’t find info on that and always cut just the tips of the nails as not to risk it 😅

    • @TheModernFerret
      @TheModernFerret  4 роки тому +1

      That's a great question! That white portion really does seem like a mystery doesn't it? The white portion is not part of the quick, so you are fine! Think of that portion of the nail as "calloused" and thicker from constant wear. However, leaving a gap from the red quick to your cut is important - you don't want to cut right up to the quick.

    I've loved ferrets for years, I know a shit ton about them, and always wanted them as pets but never been able to take the plunge (work, and a lot of moving reasons). This is by far one of the most informative ferret video's I've ever seen. Would love to see you do some videos on training and stopping things like nipping and biting, 'cause that's a common issue I've heard people have visiting people with them as pets. I see you've got one coming up about their natural musk, which is also another reason people are instantly turned off by owning these amazing animals! So excited to see that!
    Anyways, bit of a tangent, but good stuff, def a sub from me!

      Thanks for watching! I understand being scared. I actually used to make Channing do it for a while. Then when we made this video and I had to dig deep and relearn, it made me feel a lot more confident. A big secret is to rest the clippers on the toe so you can pivot the clippers safely and in a controlled manner. It's better to cut too long than to cut too short, you can always come back next week to try again. I believe in you! Check back in and let me know how it goes!

    Any alternative methods for safer cutting? I doubt rolling them up in a towel like a burrito would be beneficial! Trying to socialize the two ferrets; sharp splintering nails is not a good idea for such!

      You don't need to clip far! Just the white tips at the end, don't clip too close to the red vein - that will cause pain and bleeding!

    What if you ferret doesn't care about salmon oil, I needed to cut his nails and since I had nothing I had to scruff him and i think that could slow our bonding.

    I need to start doing this with my 2-month old soon, but I am terrified about doing it wrong, even after doing the research. I let him dig both outside and in his indoor sandbox, so they get a lot of natural wear, but even so, I can't put it off much longer. Pray for me!

    Long story to sum it up i want a ferret but I don’t know if I can have a ferret because of past events
    I’m watching all these videos wanting a ferret but I did this exact thing with a rabbit a few years ago I thought I knew everything and that it would be easy but it was a disaster and someone else had to take care of him because he hated me and chewed all my things but I still am considering a ferret after all this stuff that happened with that rabbit so I don’t really know if I can not do this again with a ferret or not I will probably just end up not getting one who knows

    • @BarbarianKingCoC121
      @BarbarianKingCoC121 2 роки тому

      @@venusp1494 my only concern is the bonding I think it’s just because I didn’t take the right precautions and rabbits scared prey animals. ferrets seem less scared and more open to humans being around them so maybe it will be easier and I’m older so I might just get one and really be committed until we are best friends

    • @venusp1494

      i know this comment is old but you never got an answer! ferrets need their nails to be clipped often as they can get uncomfortable as they grow out. they can also end up becoming ingrown if they get too long

      As long as you have enough light to see the quick clearly, then yes! In fact, I consider it a bonus to cut their nails while they are sleeping because you get to skip an entire step :)

    what if i never cut my ferret's nails?

    • @TheModernFerret
      @TheModernFerret  3 роки тому

      Good question. The long nails will most likely become uncomfortable for your ferret, and he will scratch at carpets and furniture. This tends to split the nail, and you ferret will get caught on fibers more often, which could result in them panicking for being stuck.

      That's a great question. What county are you located in? There may be other types of fish oil that are safe for ferrets or other kinds of oil but I would have to do some research first.
