I'd say heading to the final boss right after you start the game is actually a good idea. I did that on my first playthrough and it was pretty epic (there's much more to the fight if you go that early). It didn't take away from the rest of the game for me, but I did get to enjoy an amazing endgame that most players will miss out on. Doing the rest of the game afterwards was still a lot of fun.

This game is really georgous, and i can totally see the monotlith influence. While i wasnt big on Zelda's voice, either, I liked how mature her character was.
I agree that the narrative is just ok, but i have a hunch nintendo will get more ambitious on that aspect in subsequent releases. like how links awakening and link to the past came after the first zelda, and majoras mask and wind waker came after ocarina of time.

Zelda BoW is one of those games that I just stopped playing for some reason (had 2 "main dungeons" completed) but when I get back to it, I know I can just pick it back right up without needing to read a Wiki or something. You actually made me want to resume my game! Great job as always!

I'm a huge Zelda fan but this one is the one I had the least fun in, I see why a lot of people love it and I think it's a great game, but for me it's not not a great Zelda game. I miss a story, I miss some endearing characters, I miss something that keeps me going. I feel like the reward of exploration is contemplation and I understand that for some it is a lot but for me it is not enough.
Anyway, your review is great :)

Really? There is a TON of lore. Ever race segment is lore. How they got to be there today... the events of what happened 100 years ago etc.

Awesome Review! I had been looking forward to this and you delivered! This is now my favourite Zelda game. I just felt like a little kid again, being constantly wowed and feeling like a hero! And this game keeps on surprising me with things being constantly discovered. Anyway thanks for the Awesome Review! :D
PS: aAother cool thing to note is that the house theme is actually still in this game, it's just really slowed down.

To answer your question about if Zelda should have open-worlds or traditional worlds. Why not both? I find that the series should both have games that really try things that are out there like Breath of the Wild but also games that look back and improve on past concepts like A Link Between Worlds. Although since there can only being so many big budget Zelda games every few years. I would like to see them do more open world as long as they can really improve or mix up the open world game play.

I overall really liked BoTW. Especially from an artisitic point. However; my main gripes were:
    1. Empty feeling world
    2. Not enough enemy variety
    3. Link didn't feel like a "Master Swordsman" - more like a kid flailing his weapons.
    4. Side Quests were ok. But I wish they tied to the story more
    5. Forgettable NPC's.
    6. Not enough time with leaders of different territories. I really liked Riju (especially walrus riding with her) and after you did what she wanted... that was it. No need to see her again.
    7. Crappy/Samelooking bosses. Seriously. In OoT You fight a giant spider, then a giant dinasaur thing and lastly some crazy jellyfish thing. In this game? 4 guys they call *Element* Blight Ganon which basically are like the 4 poe sisters from the Forest Temple.
    8. Horrible final boss fight.
    9. Shitty expansion that didn't really expand on the story going forward, but rather, more of the same of what you kinda-sorta already know.

      Gonna reply point by point:
1.) There are 900 koroks, 120 shrines, teeming wildlife, and you never know what you'd see around the corner. i always found something. however, It's a post-apocalyptic world...you're not going to find civilization and people everywhere. it's an expansive, open wilderness.
2.) I was okay with the enemy variety but i can see what you mean and it would have been cool to have more.
3.) I put in the effort to master the combat tech (of which there are tremendous combinations) and, trust me, Link doesn't "flail" around; he knows WTF he's doing with the master sword as well as the bow.
      4.) Agreed
5.) Uh, Kass? Hudson? (Bolson was memorable but also annoying)
6.) You can visit the champion descendants/successors and talk with them more or read their journals for more insight. Just because you're done with their part of the story doesn't mean you can't find out more about them.
7.) The blights were there thematically. It would make no sense for random bosses to be in the divine beasts. They are supposed to be corrupted forms of their respective elements and ganon-esque since he is the one corrupting them.
8.) This complaint always annoys me. Ganon is only as easy or hard as you make it. If you take the time to do everything before you get to him, you are OP and you're supposed to be. If you go without doing the DBs or maxxing out your hearts/stam, or upgrading your gear, it's a lot more challenging. The ease of the Ganon fight is directly correlative to how much time and effort you put into preparing beforehand and that makes sense. The final phase is purely for aesthetic purposes.
9.) I get that you didn't enjoy the expansion but to say it's shitty is just over-reacting. The more you play the DLC, the more you learn. There are more insightful journal entries and different spoken cut-scenes when you go back and defeat the DB blights again in your memory. I have had 4 different spoken cut scenes so far for each champion that continues to reveal their characters.
obviously opinions and experiences vary and are mostly subjective but your list seems to be based on very little while cutting large swaths of generalizations without really thinking about it.

    Great review 🙌🏼
OOT is still my favorite Zelda game, I just realized. Maybe it's just because it was my first introduction to Hyrule and the characters and the music and story.. it left a huge impression on me. I really knew nothing about what these games were about. Yeah, maybe it's just that OOT was my 1st experience with this world. It really still is my favorite.
I feel like BOTW is a whole new thing. So different from its past. So many conventions broken/changed. Sure, there are many of the same characters, but it just feels like it occupies its own place, a whole new category, among all games. I really can't see how it can be compared to past games. And I don't see why it would even be necessary to compare, but that's what people do, and it's inevitable to compare and try to find the "best"
BOTW is really an amazing/beautiful/stunning game, at times even a moving work of art.
If this is someone's 1st introduction to the Zelda universe, no doubt it's their favorite game. I'm happy for these kids who get to have BOTW as their intro to Hyrule.

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  7 років тому +2

Oot will always has a place in my heart, as Oot was my first too.
But it is a brand new monsters, and seeing where it was and where it is now and it's amazing.
And I feel the same. If this was someones first Zelda game... oh boy they're in for a treat...but they're gonna have a REAL hard time going backwards. Haha.

    • @Extention6
      @Extention6 7 років тому +1

Pelvic Gaming hopefully the new dungeon in the dlc is a more traditional dungeon. I can't imagine it being another Devine Beast.
And I get it.. after 15+ games with basically the same formula, they needed to make a change. Woah what a change/risk they took
It's been awesome showing BOTW to my 6yr old nephew. He loves it. It's all he talks about.. he's always asking me about it and wants me to tell him more about this universe 😭 it's hilarious to watch him wander around and discover new things with a bit of my help, and have him see the map, to show how huge of a world this is.. blows his mind 😂

  • @josephcross8464

Judging Breath of the Wild in contrast witht the other Zelda games is tricky, because the only other game in the series that's remotely similar to this one is the very first of the franchise. Personally I loved it!... but I think there's A LOT of room for improvement. I really liked the open world aspect; having the oportunity to get to any place I wanted right from the get-go without any limitations was incredibly exhilarating and refreshing and no matter where you go you got incredible vistas to admire and some cute and friendly characters to meet. However there are some things that still bother me, like I don't flat-out hate the breakable weapons system, but I think there's gotta be some way to balance it out, some other way to get you to try different kinds of weapons without taking the ones you've already found away from you in such a lame way. As for the way they handled the dungeons and the story, I think the next game should be more like "A Link Between Worlds" in that regard; just remove Ravio's Item Rental Shop and place the items you need to access each dungeon in diferent locations of the map and you've got your reason to go out and explore it, as well as unique dungeons with different themes and mechanics. More enemy variety would be welcome too.

  • @JTu8925
    @JTu8925 6 років тому +3

I feel you. Majora's Mask is my favorite simply because the side-quests gave so munch more meaning to the game. Even the story behind how it was developed was great, they were on a strict time limit during the year of 1999: not only was the game due, but the world was supposed to end lol It came out in the US October 2000 right before Halloween so everything was just on point. The whole mysterious dark vibe. Everyone was in a state anxiety because of the moon yet still living their lives preparing for the festival. And also because it was a story that didn't involve the Triforce Trio. It was just Link being the hero that he is because that's just who he is. The Zelda series never gave npcs more importance than Majora's mask.
    Now...Breath of the Wild ha
Fun game. Customization was awesome. The big world map was cool, I do miss the themed dungeons pertaining to the environment. I wish there were more Yiga hideouts. The overall story was meh, the dlc was cool. A nice challenge. I understood why the music took a minimalist approach, to actually simulate being out in the wild lol The shrine theme did become repetitive, maybe variations to the theme? The enemy diversity was lacking but I understand that since Hyrule was in a state of desolation and rebuilding, there were no dungeons for the real insidious monsters to spawn and incubate. But I really appreciated the Lynels! Mipha is "Fish Bae" haha I actually liked that the weapons broke. The ending sucked.
    I give it a solid 9.

I love the labyrinths and the leviathan areas the most cuz Zelda II, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker nostalgia 🙏🙏🙏

I don't agree with the notion that people who have legitimate gripes with the game are "edgy" but that's what happens when people rave about something like it's flawless. It's amazing how much people enjoy simply running around this map and finding things. The amount of times the word "freedom" is gushed out over this game is proof enough. That scratches such an itch with people that no amount of flaws elsewhere could truly dampen the experience for them. That and people who are sick of the formula that's been a thing since Link to the Past get their bone thrown to them.

I'm so looking forward to playing this myself! My brother hinted at an early birthday gift... so I'm curious what I'll think when he gets to it. A gaming review site in Norway actually gave it a very edgy 6/10, so I hope that reviewer and I don't have the same taste D:

watermellowtune What where his criticisms? I'm not saying this game was perfect but it certainly is above average.

There were a lot of the regular criticisms I've seen in other reviews such as the framerate drop, annoying weapon durability.. but also some stuff that I think kinda depends on your playstyle and/or his personal preferences. He said a lot of the world felt boring and empty and you had to walk/ride the horse over huge empty areas, but there's been a warp system in so many Zeldas so I don't get why not just use it if that's more convenient for you? He ended up doing that though, but still felt the horse and battle mechanics were not very good or interesting. The horse struggled going up or down hills, though some in the comments said it might be because the horse lacked strength or something. The battle mechanics were basic and it seemed arbitrary where you hit an enemy or where they hit you.
I wonder if some of the empty areas might not be so empty since there are 900 koroks hidden? Bad graphics was also one, but like, I'm having fun with Pokémon Yellow these days and just got a PS3 this year so I think I'll personally be fine with them. He also complained about the reused music from older games, there being a lot of it equating it to lazyness, but isn't that a Zelda thing? There are some iconic tunes that have become kind of a Zelda staple and it's always a pleasure to hear them again for me. The towers you had to climb to get a new part of the map didn't have any function besides that. Not very groundbreaking in general was the conclusion. A lot of repetetive, empty and boring content relying too much on nostalgia besides the main story sections that he praised. ETA: it was fun the first 20 hours or so but after that the weaknesses began to really show for this reviewer.
Eh. I've done my best to paraphrase what I could find by skimming the review again. It seems like he got more annoyed by the bad stuff and not as swayed by all the good stuff than a lot of other people were, but I don't feel like he overall put out a good enough argument for the 6/10 score to truly convince me, only make me aware of things that might be an issue that I'd already learned from other reviews. Each to their own I guess! I'm confused by some of his criticisms based on my previous experience with Zelda games. Others I'll just have to wait and see for myself since they are specific to this game but overall I'm positive to the game. The only Zelda game I've played and disliked is Phantom Hourglass and that cursed ocean king-dungeon you had to do over and over again, but that's not a problem I've heard about in BOTW.

Awesome video! Cannot put into words how much I love this game! Love the story, the gameplay is really fun and I love how open it is. The music is absolutely fantastic and the graphics are beautiful! The only thing I didn't like was the voice acting and lightning. Lightning is so annoying to deal with! Still isn't my favourite Zelda but it is an amazing game! Fantastic review keep up the awesome work! :)

Well, while I love the openness and freedom of Breath of the Wild, I'll definitely miss the tried and true "key and keyhole" formula of older games if we never get a main series title in that style ever again. Maybe what will happen is that home console releases will all be open world, but handheld releases will retain the key-and-keyhole formula. Does that make sense? I dunno. But then again, Nintendo is blurring the line between home consoles and handhelds with the Switch, so who knows.
Great review, as always. I agree with most of the points you made, except for Zelda's voice, which I particularly find endearing.

There were no freezing issues in my wii u playthrough (but yes, there were frame rate drops). I guess the wii u version has one advantage over the switch one.

I want the sequel to BotW to follow the same open world formula but to be more like Majora's Mask, similar atmosphere, characters, music, masks, sub stories!! and I want it NOW!!
