Toxic chemicals - A menace to bees and farmland | DW Documentary

  • Modern agriculture is designed to produce high yields. But it also depletes the soil. How do over-fertilization and pesticides impact the environment and humans? Are we poisoning our world and driving species to extinction?
    Fertile farmland is a precious resource - and it is vital to food production. But the abundant use of chemicals is ravaging the Earth, while pesticides are making species go extinct, contaminating soils, and killing off microorganisms important to a healthy generation of humus.
    Glyphosate, neonicotinoids, organophosphates, or pyrethroids: These are just a few of the approximately 1,000 pesticides and herbicides approved in Germany to kill pests, fungi, and weeds. Farmers distribute about 90,000 tons of pesticides a year on their crops - yielding billions of euros of business for chemical companies.
    "Neonicotinoids are flushed into the soil by the rain. There, they are highly toxic to many organisms ... They poison insects and the environment", explains toxicologist Henk Tennekes. Neurotoxins from neonicotinoids have long been suspected of causing bees to die en masse. It took 30 years for neonicotinoids to be prohibited EU-wide, in 2021, even though early studies had warned against their use. Even now, the fight isn’t over. For one thing, emergency approvals for neonicotinoids are being used to circumvent their prohibition. For another, other substances with similar applications have been on the market for a long time, the effects of which are insufficiently researched. Moreover, neonicotinoids are still authorized for use in many countries outside the EU.
    Nearly 40 percent of the EU budget is spent on agriculture. The common agricultural policy (CAP) was recently renegotiated and will be in place until 2027. It is supposed to also promote eco- and climate-friendly agriculture. But many say the new CAP is still far from green.

      honey bees can also be a powerful tool in the rebuilding of these native ecosystems too, especially where there may otherwise be a declining number of native pollinators, native plant species, etc.
      into several years of maintaining a given apiary, one can expect more native wildflowers, and successful reproduction of the plant species which will then also help to feed many other organisms throughout that locale.
      short term, over population of honey bees can increase competition, but maintaining an appropriate sized apiary without the goal of maximum honey production, or not for production at all, can absolutely be a positive long term investment into biodiversity and increase yields of native forage for all organisms within that radius.
      when it comes to the beekeepers fighting these fights, against chemicals specifically and those of us within the beekeeping community who are also not using chemical interventions *inside the hives*, many of us are also advocating for native species too, but in a lot of ways - at present - honey bees, beekeepers, are somewhat more able to represent that fight in a monetary/industrial sense, to take on these giant chemical companies.
      though we/society at large is absolutely at a disadvantage with how much money influence politics.

      @@deciduus yes, you give valid points, but there's no much media coverage for wild bees, therefore common ppl think they need to add a beehive at their backyard to save the bees, which imho really defeats the point: common ppl can contribute better by adding shelters for wild bees (it's also a fun kid project), rather than a beehive - leave latter for professionals. As I've heard the number of honey bees really skyrocketed in the past years, despite the problems with beekeeping (pest, disease).

    Greed - one of the major downfalls of humans. Ironically we are killing ourselves trying to maximise profits. It saddens me to see so many bees killed, they are so precious, what a waste. All organisms play a part in our ecosystem, just that some are more beneficial to us than others but we must keep this balance rather than take shortcuts.

    • @NamFlow
      @NamFlow 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, that's the thing that these documentaries should also mention. If Europe banned all of these chemical substances that would be great, but those companies that manufacture those chemicals would just move their business elsewhere => 3rd world countries. In fact - as you already mentioned - they already do that as we are speaking. And already developed countries don't seem to care about people living in those countries and how it may affect them so much... it's sad stuff but that's our reality because we allowed those big chemical corporations to play Gods. To risk with health and lives of all living organisms on our planet, and all of that for what? Convenience? And It's only our fault for allowing them to do so.
      You know.. one gotta be a hell of a psychopath or sociopath to do this to our environment WILLINGLY. They know god damn well what they are doing to the environment and they know why they do it => to make tons of money in shortest time possible . These people are just missing empathy for the others. They care only about themselves and maybe their close ones, but they surely don't care that it will affect future generations. All they care about is their "wealth being". All they care about is to have a high score => a lot of money => power, for the time they are alive. They don't care what happens after they die. They don't even care about their own families it seems, otherwise they wouldn't poison the whole planet like this..

    • @lauralafauve5520
      @lauralafauve5520 2 роки тому +1

      Well, some farmers do. Other farmers would be happy just to get along, but they are pressured by large corporations who have finagled being their business partner.
      Take chicken. The partner supplies the eggs. Decides how many chickens THEY think the farmer should raise. If the farmer doesn't raise as many as they want s/he is penalized.
      let's say the farmer wants his chickens to have a foot and a half square piece of space (1/2 a meter square) instead of the standard 1 foot square. He wouldn't be able to raise as many chickens in the space he has. Not only would he get less money, but the corporate partner would penalize him because he wasn't producing as many chickens as they wanted.
      Remember, they don't just want to make a profit, they want to make a BIG profit.

Scientists who study Earth's resources prove that current population needs 1.8 Earths to sustain the current population, meaning there's no way Earth can naturally sustain more than 4 billion of us. The fact is; the problem is Overpopulation of Humans. We already exceeded long ago what soil can naturally provide to humans. Same thing goes with clean water and Oxygen. The last time I checked scientific figures; the current population needs 1.8 Earths to just sustain the current population with resources it can naturally provide. We live on a finite planet, we can't be having infinite population growth this consumption. We're paying the price of of our uncontrollable population growth

The toxins go into my yard, where I no longer see the beauty of beneficial insects! We need to OUTLAW ALL TOXINS and locate easy solutions. The inside of my home is bug free. Recipe: Two cups of brown sugar, half cup boric acid one cracker or bread, mix with a little water and no more bugs. Outside, spiders take care of the rest, but who knows how much longer they will be around.

  • @nathanielanderson4898

    Capitalism is driving farmers to use whatever they have to in order to compete in today's market. Our environment and our food is suffering because of these economic practices with no regulations.
    Without healthy farming practices, our soil is no longer a renewable resource.
    Farmers can't compete in today's market, unless they use the same chemicals and genetically modified seeds that their competitors are using. The diversity of food products available have declined because of these practices. Our farmers have become driven to make a profit, over their ability to provide a quality product to the consumers . It was different when we had many small farmers who were more concerned about producing quality food, and maintaining the quality of their soil, and upholding years of tradition passed down through generations. The large companies responsible for selling these chemicals need to be held accountable. And the farming industry needs to have regulations that protect our environment and the quality of our food, as well as their ability to make a profit. When supply and demand dictates a price for a commodity be lower than the cost of producing it, then farmers have to seek out ways of making a profit that compromise the quality of the commodity. They will even be driven to hurt the environment in their quest to stay afloat in this market.
    Our failure to regulate these chemicals, and regulate farming, is a failure of Capitalism. Capitalism is only good as long as it promotes healthy Competition. In today's market, people buy out their competitors once they are forced out of business. After all the small farms have been run out of business, large cooperate farms are the only farms that remain. Producing food has become more about making a profit for a monopoly than it has become about producing quality food, and protecting our environment.

      @PG-3462 2 роки тому

      @@christofferbrandel6491 Exactly. People want cheap food which come ready out of the box/restaurant. This requires monocultures for two reasons: 1) monocultures make food into commodities (in other words, factories/restaurants which purchase all this food want to purchase huge quantities of it and all the food needs to correspond perfectly to a list of criterias) 2) Monocultures make food cheaper, as a much bigger quantity is produced. People always blame "capitalism" for everything, while the actual problem is overconsumption and bad consumer behaviors. Even if we became perfectly communist tomorrow morning, nothing would change if people don't change what and how they eat. People must learn to cook again, to prefer food produced locally and stop purchasing industrial food

    • @PG-3462
      @PG-3462 2 роки тому

      @willie wortel However, you're not any better than those who blame capitalism. Here you're blaming China for everything... Pollution comes from overconsumption. Most products that we overconsume are produced in China... Stop trying to blame others and you should realize that you also need to make efforts to change your lifestyle. It's not by blaming capitalism, other countries, the government or corporations that things will change. It's by changing your lifestyle and your consumption habits, and by encouraging others to do the same

      Plants also require a light-dark cycle to develop properly. They need rest like the rest of us. :)
      Plants can be grown with hydroponics sure, but those will be weaker and less prolific than ones grown in a healthy soil. Roots form a symbiotic relationship with soil organisms like mycorrhizas (fungi), which increase nutrient intake and help plants to fight against pathogens.

      @digitalwojtya3669 2 роки тому

      @@ShakorPicou @ladoga Growing hydroponically/aeroponically is actually the best way of growing plants the challenge is providing enough light for crops like wheat in vertical farming, and generally upcost of building the infrastructure to farm those plants on (especially that you need to aerate the water and different machines to collect the crops)
      Its maybe unnatural but the plants dont really care if they get the nutriens from feriliser or basically the same thing but broken by bacteria from dead plant matter, additionally the best thing is that aeroponics/hydroponics waste pretty much no water so they are very eco friendly, there are no runoffs as all the water can be recycled.
      To make things even better is that if you can create very clean sterile conditions and isolate the plants you dont need to worry about using any pesticides, and if you have contamination its possible to eradicate the pests with one time use.
      hydroponics/aeroponics are the best in every aspect and plants grown this method can be grown to be absolutely perfect in terms of taste, color and nutritional value, the challenge is basically starting cost, acces to advanced enough technology like LED efficiency to be good enough and modyfying the plants to be more efficient and adapted too

      @@ladoga you can actually search for ppl growing hydroponically, the plants are actually much bigger and heathier than soil/outside ones, the difference is night and day.
      they might be weaker in terms of transplating them back to soil and to outside, as they need to acclimatise to different conditions and come in contact with outside diseases the same way as native americans were very vulnerable to common cold from european ppl back in history, but that doesnt completly matter if you simply are farming those plants as obviously you completly separate the plants from outside environment from start to finish without needing to transplant them anywhere
