🌟 DESCRIPTION🌟
This is definitely a tough one to edit as a traditional walkthrough, because make no mistake, this game is truly open world. You can go anywhere on the map and you can do things in almost any order. There’s no fluid narrative guiding you other than you need to collect some things to unlock other things. So I tried to just compress my experience here in a 12 hour vid. Cut out most deaths. Cut down most failures in puzzles, although not all. Just wanted to give you an idea on the vid!
MY THOUGHTS ON THE GAME: I absolutely loved this game. The game is far from perfect, there are many issues that would drive me crazy in other games: grind-fest, constant texture pop-in, disjointed narrative. But ultimately, for Sonic Frontiers, “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”
The game took me about 30 hours to beat on normal, (I did the ending on Hard Mode to get the full ending) and got S Rank on all the old-school Sonic levels. I spent a lot of time gathering memory tokens to try and get as much of the side stories as I could. I also completely unlocked Sonic’s skill tree. But there is still more to do if I wanted.
For me, the thing that has always made Sonic what it is, is the beautiful feeling of visceral speed. Make no mistake about it, this game is truly an open world games, and there’s always been doubts to whether Sonic can translate into an open world environment. When I first saw the previews, I was skeptical. The world felt dead, empty. And indeed it is empty when comparing it to traditional open world games. There are very little NPCs, there not many activities, no sprawling side quests etc. But after playing it, what I’ve come to realize is that Sonic doesn’t need to be like other open world games, nor should it. What this game really is, is a sprawling playground to maneuver Sonic’s incredible speed and tight controls. He’s perfect. He FEELS perfect. (60FPS only!)
The 5 different maps are all fairly large and provide a huge canvas for you to paint with controller. The environment is chalk full of mini puzzles, rails lines, and secrets that all use Sonic’s moves in different ways. You can double jump, slide, speed boost, parry, cyclone loop and so much more. Looking back on it now, Sonic 06 and Sonic Adventure both tried to do Open world hubs and they didn’t work, because Sonic fans didn’t want to slow down the pace. The very thought of slowing down is anti Sonic. And now, they finally got it right. At least the barebones engine-of-it-all.
The combat is also a standout in Frontiers. It is a bit on the simpler side, to the point that if can feel like button mashing at times, but there is enough variety in skills that it never got dull throughout my entire playthrough. It’s always fun unlocking the new skill and using in your repertoire.
The last but not least, the soundtrack. OH MY GOD THE SOUNDTRACK. It’s so varied and eclectic and yet it all works. There’s mood-setting atmospheric hymns, as well as 90’s anime rock blaring during boss fights. There’s dubstep and Sonic elevator music. It all works. I don’t know how, but it is an absolute masterpiece of a soundtrack. Incredible.
All that being said, there’s major room for improvement. The pop-in in particular is very frustrating. In most games, a pop-in ultimately doesn’t mean much other than a graphical bug that might suck you out of the immersion. In this game, so much of how-you-see-the-world changes how you move around-in-it. The pop in can really throw off your rhythm and damper your experience. Draw distance is also pretty poor (played on the Xbox Series X). When you’re trying to traverse over long lines across islands, but you can’t see the rails in the distance, you find yourself wasting time looking for the right path because you couldn’t see something that is supposed to be right in front of your eyes.
The grindy-ness is pretty extreme, it takes a lot to level up your speed and ring capacity for example. In my 30 hour playthrough I only got my ring capacity to level 15 out of 99 for example. To be fair, it’s not something I particularly cared to grind for, but the requirement of hunting down Kocos around the map is not something that enticed me. I got my power and defense well over 50 in the same time, not even trying to level them up. It’s 100% padding, but truthfully I never minded because I enjoyed using Sonic so much it didn’t matter. From an objective point of view, I’d give the game a 7.5/10, acknowledging some of its missteps and bugs. But from a subjective point of view, I’d give it 9.5/10 for the incredibly joyful experience I had. It reminded me of the first time I played Sonic on the Sega Genesis. It was a new feeling with Sonic in an Open World, and yet somehow still felt fully nostalgic. I highly recommend you check out the game!

This has to be the best Sonic game in years! Not only was the story and gameplay incredible, plus the callback to the history of the Sonic game universe at multiple points, but it also finally began to create some very huge Sonic storylines. For example, we finally learned where the Chaos Emeralds originated AFTER 30 YEARS!! It looks like Sonic truly isn't over after Forces, it's just begun! Judging by the major implications of the story and the last part where Eggman is recovering Sage, it appears that they're beginning to develop some major plot for the Sonic franchise going forward, for the first time in quite a while! Can't wait to see what Sonic games come next.

Agreed! Cindy Robinson killed it! So did Roger! They’ve both really come a long way.
Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me. She does a lot of va work in animes and stuff. You can instantly tell its her when she starts talking.
Finally a good script! Last one before this was Black Knight and that was 13 years ago
From the last mainline game, this is a MASSIVE step forward. Might just be a sign of a major comeback
Massive ? These are barely baby steps. Don't get me wrong, it's admirable that there is some attempt here at world building and tell a serious story, but in execution, it just feels so bland and boring, these voice actors don't help. Also, in the attempt making everything connected, they lumped in good lore (S3&K, SA1 and Unleashed) with garbage (Lost World, Forces, even Boom smh).
It might me be a comeback, but it's something that should have NEVER happened in the first place. Not after 12 years.
Dear god can’t sonic fans be just happy for one day in there life

This does seem like a big step in the right direction from the last mainline game.
And a step up from Origins too.
Origins was a compilation of old games, not really anything to called new per say, and it's a classic title.
While most people would dislike Origins, I think some people only like it because it’s a 2010s (to early 2020s) Sonic game (today, with the birth of Sonic Frontiers, this is the end of the Meta (or Colours, or Second (or third or 2.5 after the late 2000s with the Sonic Storybook duology (power to those that like these games), Sonic ‘06, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (I’d take not only Super Mario RPG, but any Mario RPG, mainly the ones of the 2000s, any day), Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Free Riders.) Sonic game so they would justify the flaws of games of that time (from Sonic Free Riders to, you guessed it, Origins).
@@kieranstark7213 And maybe because of the official Sonic 3 widescreen port
So they put Sonic in an empty Xenoblade type universe and thought that was a good idea. ugh...
@@deedeemerry1295 Tell that to everyone having fun with it, it's still a step up in the right direction nonetheless, they just need to expand upon it now.
6 hours of school: ❌
12 hours and a half of a Sonic Frontiers gameplay: ✅
It’s amazing how much character development there is with knuckles and sonic relationship this might be one of the best 3D sonic games ever to exist
For anyone curious, yes, the last 2 islands are just straight cut off sections of the first island, you can even see them while you're on the first island but you can't reach them because they've been made inaccessible. There's even a recording from Eggman where he mentions specifically 3 islands meaning the change to cut them off happened after that dialogue was recorded and recent enough that no one thought to go back and change that.
It's another example of Sega being Sega, please don't hold it against the game itself, it's clear Sonic Team is really trying here and I'm super hopeful for what might come next assuming Sega actually cares about the franchise.
I'm so tired of this shit
Damnn
Not only is true the fact that the game looks actually good, is also true that it has the best lighting I've seen in a Sonic game, looks beautiful.
Unleashed lighting still better
@@Rifter007 true
@@Rifter007 Well
I don't want to say that Unleashed's lighting is bad, but I think the particles, reflections, global illumination, shadows, effects and the way how things react to this lighting is a LOT BETTER, just in terms of lighting as the graphics from Unleashed are way different than Frontiers in many ways, so I think that the art style is the most important thing to consider in this case.
@@Rifter007 that was I'm the 2000s, I think he is talking about the 2010s.
I'm quite disappointed with these graphics. The lighting is so flat and the world feels so lifeless.

About the game entirely, ITS AWESOME! A HUGE STEP UP FROM SONIC FORCES! AND THE GAMEPLAY ON THIS COULDNT BE BETTER!!!

For one of the first time, Eggman had emotions, He never showed emotion to Infinite, or the Deadly 6. But Sage and Eggman had a totally different vibe. And the line "be careful daughter" was so touching since Sage called orbot and cubot her brothers 💙

@@LordDeathAku far from sonic heroes, idk why these developers are against a sonic multiplayer game . sonic heroes was golden

The atmosphere this game passes is INSANE. Based on our last releases, this game is a breath of fresh air into the franchise in almost every aspect. Technically speaking, it's far from polished, and it feels rather bland at times, most likely because I'm not used seeing Sonic in a true open world (it still feels unreal ngl). However, the sense of freedom it captures like no previous Sonic game has managed to pass makes it humbly up to the top. This does feel like the rebirth of our blue hedgehog, and I'm so glad to see it happening.
Don't know how I managed to avoid spoilers for the month and ten days it took me to watch this but this game was amazing. The visuals, the music, the story, everything I've seen about this game is amazing.

As a player who beat the game with Japanese audio, I noticed there are a lot of differences between the English and Japanese dialogues.
During the intro when Tails and co are struggling against the abnormal current in their plane, there is one long Japanese line Tails says with the subtitle fading prematurely. Now that I've seen the English parallel, I understand why. This game was created with primarily the English-speaking audience in mind. 😮
Sonic is less popular in Japan than in English speaking countries
Sonic is one of my childhood memories. People loved Mario but for me I was a Sonic guy. Getting this now!
This game looks amazing. There are some flaws i have noticed, but the open-world does not look too bad. To me, it looks like the developers are just experimenting the new formula to see how fans will play through it. State how this game is, but you got to admit there are some aspects of games like this that are good in some way. I don't mind people's opinions, great to have feedback on a product

I'm at the end of the third island, in the video, and I'd like to say a few things.
I thought that the islands were named after Greek Deities. Kronos, Ares and then probably Hades for the third but it was Chaos instead.
Edit 1: Then it goes back to Greek Deities with Rhea.
Edit 2: I was wrong about Chaos, it IS a Greek Deity. (Khaos)
Also the Titans seemed to have names of medieval fantasies like Knight and Wyvern. Not sure about the first Titan if he was a medieval fantasy.
Edit 2: I think Giganto too has relations to that.
Edit 3: With the four wings, *"Supreme* being" seems like the medieval fantasy here.
I can't believe I watched a 12h long video in one day.

Thats exactly what i was thinking
The characters in the game went into a mental change
Amy:from being a childish sonic fangirl to a more mature personality
Knuckles:still a hot-headed idiot but after seeing his past ..I feel bad for him being chained to the master emerald so he decided to go on a journey to gain experience about life and that's a welcome change to his character
Tails: from being a sidekick to sonic to a person who wants to be a help for sonic anytime he needs him
And lastly ...
Sage: she wants to protect eggman but she also wants to help sonic because she saw what he is doing to free his friends but because both are enemies
Sage gave me Zerotwo childhood vibes
A person who wanted attention, lost in different emotions

Though it kinda lacks some elements, (Voice throughout the first level cyberspace.) And it also has no feel to it as i imagined it would have. Nethertheless its kind of a good purchace.
Y'all don't know how satisfying it is that they brought back introverted Sonic
What in the fuck is “introverted Sonic”
@@jayevans6146 Search it up on UA-cam. OG Sonic is an introvert.
@@boomgirlbucko That is literally the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. These Sonic fans just be making up bs for views.
Sonic was never an “introvert”. Literally no official work or press has specified this.
@@jayevans6146 Just look it up. The reason it sounds like bullshit is because the new writers have completely ruined Sonic's character. Remember in Sonic X when Sonic gets challenged to a race and he declines and would rather chill alone on the roof? And he only accepted because they wouldn't stop bothering him? Also, just btw, not all introverts are shy. There's a big difference between being shy, social anxiety, and introverted. (He used to be a complex three dimensional introvert/ambivert but they ruined his character and made him a one-dimensional, obnoxious, extrovert.)
Here's the video analysis: ua-cam.com/video/0spRSzuCBQ0/v-deo.html
@@boomgirlbucko They didn’t “bring back” anything. This is still the exact same Sonic since over a decade. The only thing different is good voice direction and no more cringe writing.
If those 2 things are “introvert” to you, then I guess that’s your definition.
Came back to see the wyvern fight again. Hands down my favorite boss fight in the whole game
i literally cried sm at the end.. this game is one of the best games ive ever seen yet!! keep up the good work💗
My favourite moments (I'll keep updating)
52:43 - bro... this seems like Amy's confession, I suppose. It seems that this world they're trapped in makes them speak up to their mind, like revealing their secrets. I felt genuinely shaken for a moment. Sonamy fans must be quaking. (nah bro, she was talking about the Koko dinglet there, but still, one could interpret it as such).
1:07:59 - squid ga- squid battle. This gets to showcase not only the sick moves the squid got, but also Sonic's combat system, although the player seems to resort to the default combo. Also got to see the seemingly time stop ability, which is pretty dope. Wanted to see them falling mid-air, what would the squid do?
1:10:59 - is my sense of humour broken?
1:12:23 - again, is my sense of humour broken?
1:17:36 - just sonic running through the fields. this is why this open world, which at first looks empty to the eyes, works so well. It captures the "run, just run" vibe I sorta been missing in the latest installments of the franchise.
1:29:05 - the infamous 4th chaos emerald plus sonic little dance.
1:29:40 - ...
1:32:10 - "love"
1:40:20 - "it's beautiful here, but there's a loneliness here. the land feels sad and empty".
1:48:58 - amy's been hitting the feelings again.
2:00:52 - I know, the game itself is stunning, but this stage in particular is just w o a h, it looks like you're playing inside the green hills you've got to see on that scene of the sonic movie, like a CGI but playable.
2:05:03 - from this scene I can already tell that Sage isn't the villain, as I thought originally. Perhaps not even Eggman himself.
2:08:06 - so those Kokos seem to be connected to the emeralds, in the sense they're like an ancient or alternate form of chaos-alike forms. interesting.
2:10:25 - Amy's been hitting the feelings AGAIN.
2:16:07 - the first Titan, Giganto, shows up, and with it the based SS appearance + the crazy good music + whatever this is marvelous.
3:19:40 - Ramiel spotted
Wow
Oh God IM so excited with this game!!
Thank you for uploading this video. Lot of work well done.
Wow! This has to be the best Sonic story, since Unleashed!
No, since Generations, it is the best game too
@@van-garrettjohnson6012 True.
No, the last great story before this one was Black Kight
Change my mind
@Lynus Thanks you cultured man I like you let's be friends

Can we just appreciate that this sonic is clean asf also in my opinion this might be better then sonic forces like if u agree or comment if u disagree
They should of just remastered Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2
everyone moaning that this game still isnt long enough seem to be forgetting that the last few sonic games were just about 3 hours long
Read the description please
This is only a part of the full game. Not even half
i,am just loving the sonic frontiers that,s my favorite game
I don’t think we’re talking enough about the description of the video. OP gave a really amazing and detailed review about the game
I remember the days sonic couldn't break steel containers without knuckles or the flame ring
This game looks awesome so far
Sonic has returned
Sonic fans are the most optimistic group on the internet
@@goldtiger9453 I mean, when u have been hit with non-stop trash it's easy to be optimistic even for just a decent game
@@goldtiger9453 No lmao, they are absolutely NOT. But I'm glad a good 80% of the community is finally positive about something.
I loved sonic generations, unleashed, adventure, and 06 ( yes everyone has their guilty pleasure ). I am so glad they went to the adventure formula after 06. Adventure is where you can really make sonic shine. This has to be up there with the top 5 sonic games ever. It’s a massive step in the right direction for the franchise
Best Sonic game since Generations
i love the part where sonic says: Its Fonteiri'n time" and frontier'ed every enemy in existence
Just say you didn't like the game, don't be an asshole about it. =/
@@Nova_theCat_ bro i just said it as a joke i like the game :/
@@Chrono6 Oh, my bad, I mistook that since most people use that same joke for mocking bad content. =/
8:42:07 Tails talks about how he feels like a burden to Sonic, I'm so glad they are finally addressing this issue with Tails.
it took me almost two weeks to finish but it was so worth it 🤩🤩
A sonic game that really makes you feel the speed.
Bro, these graphics are FIRE! I haven't seen a game go THIS hard since Monster Hunter World!
1:40:34 sonic sending a message for haters that says "this game is so empty"
The switch version looks pretty solid to me but man, 60fps does wonders to this game
8:45:45 one two, buckle my shoe 💀
Man, I love that the Cyber Space levels are just references of other levels throughout the modern Sonic games.
Ian Flynn making his gripes with the series known and attempting to fix them is hilarious and well deserved
THE BEST GAME OF SEGA IN YEARS I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH ❤ It is worth playing as it has a good story and the gameplay is amazing. And Sega never disappoints with the music. In conclusion I LOVED THE GAME ❤❤❤❤🎉
This game is an absolute masterpiece
this game looks fun af! thanks for the upload!
omg 12 hours gameplay, can't wait to watch it
I hope you had a blast playing the game
Two choices I can't like about this game are:
- the constant glitching and air distortions effect in your face (mostly in game, but also overused in the cutscenes)
and
- the invasive "BOOST" icon in the middle of the screen.
I mean, there wasn't any other possible way to show it?
Like, for instance, make his shoes glow 3 different colos (like: red, yellow, green), to let you know "empty", "charging" and "ready"?
And what's the need of the word "BOOST"?
After 30 seconds of gameplay, the player will already know what's that icons stands for!
The cut scenes are SO SATISFYINGLY SMOOTH MY GOSH🤩😸
buddy they look like something from a ps2 game
@@TroyTyler Bruh you people hate the franchise or smthn
@@TroyTyler ps2 lol, not even close
1:37:48 never thought I would see the words "Do it to it." In Sonoc media ever again
