He’s not incapable of wrestling but he’s primarily a striker. Jiri submitted Glover, who is a great grappler. Jiri tried taking Alex down each fight. Got him down once but Alex got back up. He has solid defensive wrestling.

Saying Alex isn't fighting the toughest guys is such a dumb statement. Ankalaev is untested and hasn't faced Jiri/Hill (the 2 previous champions). He also failed to beat Jan who held the belt at one stage. All of a sudden Ankalaev is better than someone like Jiri because he beat... Johnny Walker?? I mean who hasn't at this point. Alex faced Jiri (former champ), Hill (former champ), and Rountree (scariest contender in the division). Ankalaev isn't even a wrestler, he said he's gonna stand with Alex like everyone else. Sure, both of them supposedly have outstanding wrestling but they never use it. It'll be a stand-up fight, so I really don't understand why people are so desperate to see it.

Pereira has fought and beat (what 4 or 5) mostly champions on his UFC resume. Compared to Ilia who has only fought 1 champion.

I also don’t think Ankalaev deserved a shot over Jiri/Hill. They were both coming of title wins whereas Ank had a boring draw, then ruined another fight with an illegal knee, and then knocked out the chiniest fighter in UFC history.

And Ankalaev isn’t exactly a LHW Khabib. He averages 1 take down per fight with an accuracy of 31%. He has 8 KO wins and 0 submissions and his only loss was via submission.

Honestly win or lose I think at this point Holloway should move up to lightweight permanently after this. He definitely seems to be stronger there and making feather weight cant be good for him at this point.
As much as I'm a fan of jason, I really think he's being over critical of Alex and not giving him the credit he deserves. How is he not fighting the toughest guys?? The guy has beaten five former World Champions since he got in the UFC, both in middleweight and Light heavyweight. He fought top-ranked fighters in his divisions with the exception of khalil. It's not like the guy is fighting tomato cans. He just made the fights look easy. It's not really his fault that most of the top-ranked fighters in light heavyweight are strikers. Magomed already turned down a fight with Alex earlier this year and Alex said yes to it. The guy has saved multiple UFC cards, had multiple highlight reel finishes, he has had three title defenses in the last 175 days. He deserves fighter of the year and nobody else comes close
