  • Tim Mooney, in anticipation of his performance of "Shakespeare's Histories" take us through Shakespeare's "King John," the very first of the ten history plays. Tim does a deep dive into what seems to be two characters ("Austria" and "Philip the Bastard") who seem to have very little to do with the action but who have seemingly outsized significance in the events. Tim explains why Shakespeare drew these characters the way that he did, and why the Elizabethan audience "ate it up with a spoon."
What does Richard the Lion Heart have to do with all of this action? How heavily does his life factor into this play (even after he has died)? How did King John get such a "bad rap?" Why was he so hated?
Tim discusses just how Leopold of Austria and Limoges of France connect to the events of Richard's life and how Shakespeare merged those two characters to create a "bad guy" that everybody in England would immediately hate!
Shakespeare also finds a way to bring an unexpected hero onto the stage in the person of "Philip the Bastard."
Tim will be performing "Shakespeare's Histories; Ten Epic Plays at a Breakneck Pace" on Sunday, July 20, 2020 at 9 pm on FacebookLive/TimMooneyRep, and again on Zoom on July 21, also at 9 pm with $5 tickets available at calendly.com/t... ,

I've seen other people say Shakespeare is not vilifying John as much as most pop history does.
