Awesome, Tory! I'm glad there are security devices for keeping your sliding door from being opened from the interior. I know you've mentioned that using your stove and having to the door open is a big stressor for you.
Bear spray is awesome. It works. Very well. Does not take much training. Awareness is obviously key. 2A is great but needs lots of training vs bear spray.
Thanks for posting this, Tory. I feel you covered just about everything to keep yourself and others safe who chose to be van lifers. Even after all that, I still feel you need to be aware of situations that might be of concern. You've been doing this long enough now though and it looks like you are well prepared for trouble. Just want to express how sorry I feel for the assault you experienced. It didn't seem to stop you from living in your van. Hope you don't get tired of seeing me in the comments all the time. I promise I won't ever dress up in a clown costume and approach your van. 😄
Thank you so much for this video ❤️ it is so important for people to be made aware of this, and the fact that you put in so much useful information and broke it down so it was understandable and even gave examples was so amazing of you! Thank you again, your hard work hasn't gone unnoticed and I really appreciate all of the time and effort you've put into this 💜 x
Thank so much Tory. I'm in Oz, so no guns! I'd have to look up the laws of each state and territory regarding all the protection methods you've mentioned. However, self defence is the 1st port of call. It gives you self confidence and the confidence to even use pepper spray etc. I travel with a dog. I've always had dogs. They are friends but also protectors. I 🧡 them! This is a very important video. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes on your new build and travels 🌸 🌄 🌅 ⭐ 🌱
Thank you! I've been solo car camping and several things you mentioned will be very helpful. My husband is always going to be stressed when I'm out on my own, but i know some of these options will help him as well.
Cut your stolen car's engine on & off briefly several times. That'll make a driver think it's faulty & seek the kerb. After a minute or two, cut permanently.. You've done your best!
I am so grateful to have come across your video and watching it has been a unique experience. As someone who used to have a very adventurous personality and to see where life has taken me to the place where I constantly feel tired, and burned out, living in a city has huge effects. Watching you and your adventures inspire me to change some things and maybe also give van life a chance as well :) thank you and wish you all the best.
What an amazing video- thank you! I'm preparing for launching into van life and have just found your videos - thank you - you are talking a lot of sense (I've been lucky so far to have subscribed to a bunch of very smart YTers). Am super-keen on layers and layers of security. You make so many great points. One is around what noise to make - dog barking, alarm, or actual voice. I remember being taught that if you need to get people to listen, don't shout "help" - instead, shout "fire" Another is around your list of very useful things to carry. Although they are more DIY than safety, zip ties and duck tape are essentials for me.
More good stuff, thanks. I just finished a van conversion and will be going south from New England than west to SoCal. Your videos are much appreciated.
@@ToryDelury Tory if I get three wishes I’ll use one to stop your negative comments getting thru to you and if any do showing them the dumpster instead of upsetting one of the most adorable girls on earth. You do everything so perfectly ( don’t argue 😂) and want to show the reality of the life you lead , I love watching your videos Keep up the fabulous work and remember the quality content is as good as it gets ❤️🌸🏴😎
A really nice way to give folks coverage of a LOT of safety points. You missed one really good tool that's 100% legal. A plain $20 dry powder fire extinguisher from any big box store. If you ask a local fire department, people often drop off expired ones and the FD will gladly demonstrate how they work. They create a nasty dust storm of fine powder that blinds and chokes, so there are drawbacks in confined spaces. But they are legal everywhere, and a good idea to carry in any vehicle. If you've used one, you really want to see or do a demo, because they're surprising in many ways.
@Tory. Something I see you touched on, which I’m glad but a LOT of bloggers post where they are WHILE THEY ARE STILL THERE. Don’t ever do that. Post your videos after you’ve left a location and do not tell the world where you are going next. I’m the only one that knows where one of my van life friends is at all times, as far as her social media goes, she’s at a place she was at two weeks ago. It’s just not safe to broadcast to the world where you are- especially when you have a lot of followers. It only takes one stalker, and you’re a beautiful young woman, you could easily have many. Please stay safe! This was a great video. I think I’ll have my kid order the keychain because that is a GREAT deal. I paid $30 just for one piece that you have on your safety keychain! I hope many people take advantage of it. I’ll share the website!
From my experience if you want live in the van better rent a storage and kept all your stuff in storage and leave nothing in van so no one noticed or they can kill just like I saw some got killed and left there van up in the Forest
I have friends who are police officers and I’ve bartended in nightclubs since forever. All my bouncers (who carry full arrays of weapons) always say the one item they will not leave the house without is pepper spray. Most people who have a gun get overtaken by the bad guy anyway. Look it up. Please❤️ People think “I’ll shoot a guy who’s trying to get me”. 99% of the time they hesitate for just a fraction of a second because the back of the human mind says “I’m about to kill a human” and they hesitate and the bad guy overtakes them in that fraction of a second. This is an auto response hesitation that you cannot control no matter how many times you’ve been to the shooting range. The only people in which this auto response is broken down in, are people who have been to war and have already killed people. People think they’ll be able to bypass nature when push comes to shove. Yet thousands of women who pull a gun on would be muggers and rapists get overtaken because of this. Pepper spray sits differently in the human psyche. The hesitation factor becomes none existent and therefor the weapon actually gets used. Rule number one when trying to survive is to move away from the bad guy so that he can’t grab you. Do not move towards him. This cancels out a knife as an intelligent option. Pepper spray prevents more attacks per year than all other defense items combined. Look it up y’all ❤️ Don’t try to be tough. Try to be alive.
I had no idea you were a UA-camr too. Your video style is awesome! Question about carrying though. What state(s) conceal carry permit(s) do you have? And how many states can you travel through with your permit(s)? Traveling around the country in a van would be a dream, especially if I had the piece of mind of doing so while carrying. TIA!
There is also Byrna less lethal weapon. Works off Co2 and it has 2 magazines that hold .68 caliber hard plastic balls or pepper balls… according to company is legal in all 50 states… comes in colors… safety orange is also what law enforcement has same colors for their less lethal weapons. Costs $379.00 plus tax. You can also purchase more of the rounds … have one and works well…
Simply safe seems pretty nice but in a vehicle you sacrifice the alarm call because you have to give them address so they won’t know where you are. That’s at least what I heard.
Great advice especially for women. Actually taking women’s self defense classes offered frequently for free or low cost at the numerous martial arts schools around the country would be something I would recommend to all women. Have fun and stay safe
WRT to self defense courses and martial arts in general, most dojos teach the "sport" more than just the moves you may need. Which can be great exercise and discipline. If you approach the sensei and openly tell them you are just looking to learn how to defend your life, they may be willing to just teach you the more common, and lethal, ways to combat an attacker. Strength is not required, but you have to be mentally prepared if you are planning to poke out someone's eyes. One sharpened No.2 pencil, or a classic metal Cross pen, is also a very lethal yet perfectly legal weapon--if you are prepared to use it. And while it is not ladylike to kick or grab a man in the crotch, do it hard enough and you can stop a linebacker. Any woman traveling alone, even walking home alone at night, can benefit from learning how to be a monster.
I'm sorry to have to tell you, clowns have special powers and can get in through the vents. However, I had a talk with the Clown King and asked them to leave you alone, so you should be good.
I am kind of scared of van life, even though i know life can always be dangerous even without van life. But my parents are making it worse. And also here in netherland there are no safe affordable places to park/sleep overnight
Yeah, understandable. I always felt safe, if not prepared and ready and comfortable in my van until I joined social media and people started telling me everyday constantly all the bad things that could happen. I’ve had my van for going on 3 years this July & I’ve never been in a truly unsafe situation, nothing bad, safety wise, has actually ever happened & I have slept in Baltimore, Miami, Chicago, NYC some of the most dangerous cities in America. I think the news really skews people’s minds but I think hearing people constantly warn us how awful the world is skews our own as well. I hope you find confidence to give it a try & I’m sorry it is so difficult to find overnight parking in the Netherlands!!
I pulled into a truck stop one time and seen a truck with a mannequin in the passenger seat. I guess this was to fool people and leave his truck alone.
Self defence js the best defense. Outside of just not being in the situation or getting out. Tools guns r meaningless if u can't get to it or jf u r unable to use it correctly. A little can actually go a long way from my own personal experience.
