I was recently on a trip to Ontario, Canada, where I was pleasantly surprise to encounter two beautiful Thai Ridgebacks. Some of you have requested a video on this very rare breed. So I when I saw the dogs I knew I had to film something the these amazing dogs.
The Thai Ridgeback is an ancient landrace of dog, recently established also as a standardized breed. The breed was formerly unknown outside of Thailand, but is gaining notice in the Western world. They are also known as a Mah Thai Lang Ahn.

The Thai Ridgeback, according to my aunt's experience of owning them, is extremely very protective of his/her owner. Extremely loyal and watchful, he/she is well-known among Thai people for protecting Thai homes from cobra invasion. My aunt's Thai Ridgeback had killed two cobras over the past ten years when he found the snakes lurking in my aunt's home garden, he was bitten as a result but he only had a fever because of the venom and he did not die. According to his vet, this particular breed has very strong immune system that protects them from cobra's bites. It is truly an amazing dog breed.

      @suarsivapong9311 3 роки тому +13

Because of the origin of the Thai ridgeback dog, there are abundant snakes, thus making the bloodline immune to snake venom. And he will bite the snake very cleverly.
      🙏🙏🙏🇹🇭❤️❤️❤️🐕🦊
Thais will like two breeds of dogs that are kept for guarding the garden: the Thai Ridgeback and the Bang Kaew.

I had 7 of these dogs years ago (now only remaining 2). They don't bark, they just bite (strangers) which is very scary. They are protective, agile, and predatory. I remembered when all of them were young, I woke up to see dead snakes every other days not to mention birds, squirrels, mouses, and water monitors (quite common sightings of these creatures since I live in countryside of Thailand).
All in all, they are smart, extremely loyal, and you can always count on them in case of break-in.

Just got a beautiful TR last week from Top King Thai Ridgebacks, a wonderful, highly ethical breeder in Sacramento, CA. We got the pick of the litter because we had missed out on his previous litter, the year before, and really wanted one from his beautiful dam and sire.
This dog is super smart and trainable. Gets a ton of exercise. Was house broken (for the most part) in 4 days. Got used to a leash in a matter of hours. Gets the association of words and acts, so he already knows '''go pee" and "go house" and "go beach". I'm really amazed at how intelligent he is. Granted, my husband and I are artists and have a ton of time to spend with him, so he will rarely be left alone, and that makes him happy.
Socialize has been great. He loves other dogs and is never the aggressor, however if another dog gets aggressive with him, he does not back down, even as a puppy (now 25 pounds/3 months).
If you have the time and the "dog intelligence" then I would highly recommend a Thai Ridgeback as a companion/guard dog.

    • @Thankful_n_Grateful
      @Thankful_n_Grateful Рік тому

Was the TR you're first dog?
Seems like most people would not be good match with TR's because of their need for exercise & not being left alone...

Thank you for that! We have 2 Thai Ridgebacks here in Vancouver and do not know of anyone else that has them. We have an 8 yr old female and a 14 month old blue male. They are so different, we got her at 6 months and she if very timid around people, but both of them love people. Thank you for confirming the gender aggression, it is so true in our dogs. We train the heck out of our male and luckily his only problem is that he gets too excited meeting people, but he is getting better as he gets older. So great to hear from another owner of Thai Ridgebacks! They are incredible animals..

Brian Herzke I’m from Thailand but currently living in California. I have many Thai ridgebacks growing up. I lived on a farm so at some point we had up to 20 dogs. I also have one right now in the US. I was very nervous too because the breed tendency is a bit more dog aggressive with the same gender but it can be done (still difficult). It’s all about socialization. Over the first 12 weeks, he or she has to have good experience meeting at least 100 different dogs with different breeds, genders, colors, and sizes.

  • @DarkandDeath4

Everything she has said about this breed is true to a tea! I have a female Thai Ridgeback and picked her up in Thailand to be my guardian and companion in the States. As a Thai person, it is wonderful to have a piece of my homeland wherever I go. This dog is a national symbol and is both feared and respected by the people of our country. This owner has done the absolute best to socialize and round her dogs out well. A lot of people don't realize that these dogs are extremely independent thinkers and are not likely to ask for human help in situations. They are affectionate on their own terms and while loyal, they are not likely to be velcro dogs that are always wanting to be glued to your side. When selecting a Thai Ridgeback puppy, it is important you look for good temperament first and foremost if you intend to have your dog live with you in your intimate circle and house. A lot of breeders in Thailand breed for structure and conformation for showing and keep the dogs outside for the majority of the time, so many may be unable to assess what their temperament is like indoors and around the family. That is why their temperament can be 50/50 as explained in the video. Traditionally, this dog in our country is primarily kept outdoors to guard property around the clock and most Thai people don't allow this dog into the inner circle of family life. I hope that new breeders of this breed start selecting for temperament more now that this breed has international fame so that Thai Ridgebacks can be accepted into homes as a part of the family everywhere.

      I think Mr.
Joseph Rodriguez and his upvoters means to make some sarcasm about the belief that All Asian eat dogs, including Thai, which is wrong. Quite simple logic, if they eat dogs, how could this breed along with others like Thai Bangkaew survive for hundred years. Well what they did shows who they are. It shows how well they were raised by their family and how well informed they are, not those Thai.

I have dog sanctuary in Thailand and I currently have seven puppies not 100% Ridgeback but tw two are unmistakable to that of a pure breed and their mother I rescued after she was covered in ticks and about to give birth in the woods. I know a purebred is what everyone likes but if you can find it in you, both the female and the male are my two favorites and they have awesome personalities. They were born February 5th and usually I can go around advertising to give them away to good homes, but because of the Coronavirus lockdown I have nowhere to take them and I have 22 already from previously saving them from almost certain death. I do this all on my own and I am always scraping by and 7 more going to be so much harder as I'm already separated into three sections of my land and even then there is an occasional scuffle. I would ship it to the United States as it is very easy and I would pay for it if it wouldn't be convenient for you but it's only $300 average. If you if you would like to see the pictures or anything please let me know if not no big deal. And yes they do have done spiked fur down their back and they had beautiful silky short hair and are hyper in play and also in affection but are truly awesome, I only want them to have the best chance at a great life and although I could love them and be with them is only one of me and I have so many so many and yeah it's really sad for me but I know I know they could have more attention but they deserve because their so loyal . Thank you.

    Thai Ridgeback
Genetic data assumes that the saddle-shaped dog, an ancestor of Thai saddles, is born from the mutation of a normal dog with no saddle Hundreds of years ago in Kingdom of Siam(Thailand). The breed was then distributed to India and Rhodesia at a later time. The origins of the Ari Hottentot (Ari) are from ancient India. Translated as "dog") and dog backside Rhodesian Ridgeback
Note: Thai Ridgeback is one of 2 breeds of Thai national dog. Another species is "Bang Kaew"
    .

As a Thai that also keep a TRB, I can only tell you that this kind of dog will toe the line for their whole life. They're quick learner, but only do it when they want to. And unless you can be strict to your dog 24/7, TRB is going to be very handful.

For anyone interested in this breed please don't go to a breeder. The conditions for shelters in Thailand are terrible and many of these dogs fall victim to the horrific meat trade there. There are rescue shelters in the U.S. that fly to Thailand MONTHLY and bring back 50 dogs at a time who all need homes.
We got the most amazing guy from Homeward Trails Rescue in Virginia. He is so loving and is just dying for attention. He was saved from the meat trade and has all the scars to prove it. Turns out he is a Thai Ridgeback, which was a breed we didn't even know existed! Many others have gotten ridgebacks from the same place.
Please do the right thing and look to rescues first especially for such a special dog with such an awful start.
    Thank you

Malinois are generally bordering on large, being around 50 to 60 pounds. I can't really think of many guarding breeds that are on the small side, since they generally had to be large enough to keep people from considering attacking the family or entering the property in the first place.

(Or at least I don't know if it would be more difficult than a Rottweiler. I have a Rottie and aside from her lack of socialization caused by the way she was kept by her breeder I haven't had problems with her)

when the alpha dog is separated from its pack they get anxious because it's unnatural. This is why dogs get separation anxiety when the owner leaves, because in their eyes they are the leader and the owner is the follower. Always remember to be assertive with your dog and establish rules and boundaries with them. That way, you and your dog can have a healthy leader-follower relationship.

I’ve read that the Australian Dingo originated from the Thai Ridgeback. Have you come across this in your research? Beautiful dogs btw. Thank you for sharing.

In Thailand, there are farms that breed Thai ridgeback dogs. One farm in Trat province will not sell if anyone who asks to buy it doesn't really love dogs.

Stunning dogs and I never new they existed, I search for ride back and this came up... Strange that there not recognised in the CKC and AKC as there most probably a much older dog than most recognised breeds... I have a Staffordshire Bull terrier the same couloir as your grey/Blue bitch and was recommended raw diet as he had bad skin problems. I changed him to raw and within two months all the problems were cured... Great content

I used to have a red one. His name was น้ำตาล. Man was he a mean dog. Only a few people can go close to him. Very alert, very active, very athletic and very clever. It may be smaller than a pitbull, it makes up for it in wit and athleticism (very agile). Its tail looks like a krabi sword and it much like a dingo, it was a feral dog for so long until very recently. Survival of the fittest

When you say cookies, do you mean regular human cookies like:
    Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, Oreos?
Or Special Cookies Made for Dogs?
If Person Works Typical 9 to 5, plus communting, or say works 10 hr days, 5 days a week...
How could one ensure dog is still getting time, attention, exercise needed?
Or is that type of lifestyle & pace simply not a good match?
    Thanks for sharing video...

I just came across this documentary. I just adopted a Ridgeback in Waterloo, ontario. Im surprised u live in windsor. Kinda close. The human society found a Ridgeback puppy. Excuse the spelling but shes a Rod........ she is obedient, loves other dogs, loves everyone and listens. U make it sound like their hard breeds. If ur consistant in training ur dog its a wonderful breed. I walk her everyday. If i cant walk her because im sick or whatever she doesnt complain. Shes like other dogs but big. Contact me soon. We can swap pictures.

We raised a TRD, from the breeder that (discovered) brought it to the states in the 1990s. Because it is a primitive breed, it can be tough, misunderstood, and subsequently abandoned. Lots of misinformation in the comment section. 99% of people should not consider caring for this breed, because it is too great a challenge.

There's definitely some undocumented ones. My kiddo Otis, who I had to put to sleep not long ago (cancer - he was 12), was part thai. Took me FOREVER to figure out that's what it was because they're so rare. Strongly suspect someone was trying to build a fighting dog, though, as his other parts were, best I can tell, staffy and bull mastiff. Fantastic, loyal, brilliant, funny, exasperating dog. He'll be missed.

I think what you see are not pure Thai Ridgeback, they are probably mixed but still resemble the Ridgeback. This kind of dog can be found everywhere in Thailand, I live in Thailand and I had one. He was such a charming dog, so sad he passed away in April.

I knew someone who thought they had a Rhodesian Ridgeback and I always said “no you don’t” because it was grey and way too small and stout to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
I believe 100 percent, after watching this video that it was a Thai Ridgeback. As one can expect with someone who didn’t even know what they had they also didn’t do any of the necessary training with her and she was a scary little dog.
