I am surprised. Back in the 80's, I visited a small old, old hotel in Shulenburg, Texas, and the rooms had no bathroom. The bathroom was down the hall and shared like in a home. It was just like some I've seen in spaghetti westerns. It's not much of a stretch to imagine an old, old apartment building in NYC being arranged similarly, not that'd I'd want that. And an acquaintance of mine visited rural Russia in the 90's and saw that most homes in that town had outhouses instead of indoor bathrooms. I feel spoiled. ;-)
There are two Candid Camera clips I keep looking for but never find. One is another clip with Fannie Flagg, where she is an operator who keeps telling the caller on a payphone to deposit more money and at one point issues a refund by sending some coins to the coin return. The other was one where they put a sign on a park bench that said "Dry Paint." I would love it if you could dig these up and post them.

Those days, 40 years after WWII there were tons of apartments like that, which has no bathroom but share toilet outside. We students looking for cheap rent normally live in such apartments. We would take shower in the public swimming pools where there were showers, and at university gyms. Nothing wrong with that.
