I've never liked how Richard never calls out his mother for how she treats Emily. You don't have to like someone to treat them with respect especially when it's someone your family loves.
Not to mention when you’re in their home. I never like how Richards mom spoke to Emily but especially when she was in Emily’s home, for someone so “proper” you’d think minding your manners and being respectful to someone in their house would be one of his moms skills.
I personally took that as a 'don't take it too hard, you know how she is' laugh, not a 'ha ha so funny' laugh, but your point absolutely remains. He's letting Trix run roughshod over Emily in a way he wouldn't tolerate from anyone else, and it's repugnant.

Not only does he not have any moral values in his business dealings (what he did to Jason), not only does he act like he's above everyone (how he was to Dean), but the fact that he let's his mother treat Emily, the way she does is unforgivable... But ofcourse he gets away with it because he's a man and always so cheerful... Its a good thing he wasn't in the revival (the character I mean) and I think Emily matured much more as a character not having to deal with the gilmores any more...

Emily got Lorelei after she graduated from college and married, so I assume Richard and Emily were born around 1950. So Richard's Mother might have been born around 1920. In the usa woman are allowed tow work since 1920. In the show there was never addressed what education Richards mother has. So I am assuming that she didn't go to college, which was quite common at that time and during the 1940s women employment was mostly in war industries or health sectors. I don't know if I can picture her working in either of those work fields, but she might have worked there. But to be honest picturing Richard's mother and her attitude working as a nurse or in a factory does not sit right with me.

Well, normally I would criticize Richard for not speaking to his mother about properly resepecting Emily but Emily is not a shrinking violet either. Richard has learned that he has to give Emily a certain amount of room for her to express herself, to manage things her way, etc. I would imagine that he loves Emily because Emily is very demanding and controlling like Richards mother. I would also imagine that he had to accept his mother's ways too. I dont think Richard's smile is because he enjoys Emily being bossed around. I think he finds it slightly amusing how similar Emily and his mother are well at least that is to Richard.
You did get Trix reference to scandal....Lorelei's teen pregnancy and Lorelei not marrying Christopher and Rory being a bastard child born out of wedlock. Bravo for Trix to be a woman of the world and not be shocked by it. I found this very interesting because I can remember a family member getting pregnant as a teenager and all the women (cousins, Aunts, Grandmothers, etc) were very much of the attitude that "this happens in the best of families." To this I give Trix and Emily (and Richard) for dealing with it, accepting it and then as a family weighing the options as to how it should be handled buf then it something that depends on the family, the class, the social circle, the social standing, the community they live in etc. Some places are very tough...other places are tough rooted in idealism but they are also grounded in real life...its not your mistakes that define you but how mistakes are handled.
