My father, who passed in 2004, was stationed in Gloucester, MA on the Coast Guard Cutter General Greene during the Korean War. He was an avid mariner of both freshwater and ocean adventures for the rest of his life. I discovered your channel recently and I have to say, if my dad was still alive, he would be an avid listener. Your channel reminds me of my childhood and young adulthood, listening to my dad's tutelage. Please keep up the great work.

The ASVAB isn't mandatory, but many high school guidance departments pretend it is, presumably under pressure from the recruiters assigned to their schools. This is part of a larger pattern of predatory recruiting in high schools that has been going on for decades. (The First Gulf War happened during my senior year of high school, and I'll tell you what, those guys were _visibly desperate_ at my school that year--particularly the one from the Air Force, for some reason.)

Much like you, I joined the USCG because I wanted to save lives, not take lives... helping my fellow Americans. I joined just prior to 9/11... a big part of my decision was I wanted a "job that mattered" and I could do every day, not just train for.
Anyhow, long story short. Served from 2001-2010. Stationed aboard CGC Mellon (WHEC 717), GCG Harry Claiborne (WLM 561), CGC Skipjack (WPB 87353), CGC George Cobb (WLM 564), CGC Munro (WHEC 724) & ISC San Pedro, CA.

Hi. Linguist here. You are being way too hard on yourself for your pronunciation. No one can expect you to be able to pronounce words form every other language out there, and those who complain about it could probably need a healthy dose of self reflection. Some languages have a lesser variety of sounds than others and thus speakers of those languages will have a greater difficulty pronouncing languages with greater variety. This is simply because a different set of muscles and positions are used to produce the sounds. If you're not a dancer, a short walkthrough wont help you nail a complicated dance. It takes practice. Speech is a dance of your mouth/tongue/throat and it needs practice to improve, like any other skill.
Now, rant over. Your content is great and it's amazing to find a channel like this with great quality videos and deep knowledge behind the scenes. Thank you for making these vids! Although I'd never get on a boat myself, I'm strangely fascinated by it.

I remember the drunken sailor music, from when I was in middle school, and we were forced to watch the voyage of the Mimi, and after the coursework, we visited a Maritime museum, for class, and the actual captain of the Mimi, talked to us and shared stories.
But what I remember was him playing the guitar, and asking all of us to come up with new verses to the tune, in similar sailer fashion, where everyone was part of a certain place in history...
It was memorable, and one of the reasons I'm here. So thanks for the background tune.

If you’re considering doing one that took place during this largely forgotten war, the Coventry would be a good choice, though I do believe the horror aspect would go to the Argentine ship: general belgrano. Think uss Indianapolis meets titanic, albeit with not as high a death toll you’d expect. Well, good luck.

I get you-I’m an artist, but also work in healthcare. I wouldn’t ever go FT artist. My art is mostly for my fun. As soon as I _have_ to do a project, I don’t want to anymore. Then it’s just work.
