In past homes, many years back, I’ve had a dedicated theater room and a projector like this would have been a dream! The scale you can achieve makes for such an incredible experience. But…for normal home living I don’t think any projector can be an effective solution since the color, contrast and overall picture suffer so much from excess room lighting. If you have to explain to your family or kids how they have to light control the room to watch a cartoon, you lost the game. A regular tv will give up size but gains consistency and unless you are lucky enough to have dedicated spaces, no projector out there can really give that predictable result no matter what time of day it is. Great review though, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for explaining that's my thought too . As gonna loose colors and contrast alot in daylight perhaps in future will get better laser projectors for now QD-OLED gonna be the winner for me at home
It depends on your use case and your family. We have several room options for watching tv with surround sound and I've always had a front projector and home theater in my living room and for night time movies and sports, it is tons better than a large tv. I've also had blackout shades, which cost very little, in 2 of the 3 homes I've had since 2000, and that takes care of bright daytime watching. My college age son still would rather play his video games on the 106" projector, than his 65" LG OLED. My son bought his own OLED and keeps up on audio/video as much as I do. Every time we talk about an 85" or 88" high end tv to replace the projector, we come back with we would rather invest in a better projector and bigger screen. Even the 106" compared to 88" size difference is significant and the flat mat look of a projector is more theater like. The funny thing for our family is that we hardly watch TV, but still invest a ton on them and surround. I think it's funny that you are worried about explaining to your kids about lighting control to watch CARTOONS........... they probably don't really care about picture quality like you and I do. They are probably absorbed into what they are watching, which is how adults should also be. If what you are watching can't keep your attention from nit picking on picture quality, you probably are better not watching it. I've designed and built several home theaters for myself and friends in the past. We pretty much all agree that a dedicated home theater doesn't get used as much as people think it would and it reduces the value of you home.... or at least, the next buyer pretty much says that it is no value to them as a negotiation tactic.
@@wblebon Depends on the UST projector and the type of screen you have. We have a Optoma P2, with an Elunevision 8k screen and we can watch it during the day and night and it looks awesome - in all it's 120" glorious goodness.
I have a 110 Si alr screen in my living room, sitting adjacent to my sliding glass doors that exit to the yard. Tons of sunlight all day. It's reflecting a 5000ansi lumens laser short throw, and I won't ever go back to buying a regular TV again. Period. Daylight, room light, none of it is a major detriment to viewing. If we watch an especially dark movie during a sunny Florida day, I drop the blinds. We love it. We've gotten so used to it that our relatives "small" big screen TV's have become hard to watch.
No ultra-short throw projector (nor ANY other type of projector), is able to even come close to matching OLED's ability to do absolute black. Which means that when presenting very dark content, such as scenes in space, like the ones found on the Blu-ray or video stream of the movie "Gravity", the picture produced by any projector (including all projectors that use lasers as their light sources) will look somewhat washed out, & definitely lacking in contrast, compared to an OLED showing the same movie. So even as a fan of large scale films, who appreciates the value of giant screens about as much as anyone, I still prefer to watch movies on an OLED, since our 77" Sony OLED displays stunning PQ, and looks absolutely spectacular from an 8 foot viewing distance, making the picture quality shortfall that's found with even the best projectors, apparent to even uncritical viewers.
High end TVs have better picture quality than projectors. Only consider a project if the screen size needed is bigger than Tvs offer, for example you need a 100 inch screen, TVs don’t go that back get a projector or if you need a 70 inch screen get a Tv because it’s just better
Projection gives a much more authentic movie viewing experience and, honestly, a properly set-up and calibrated high-end projector will blow your socks off. Movies were shot to be projected. Other comments here are correct, that TVs will offer deeper blacks and HDR content better but I’d still choose my HU85LS over my 65inch LG C9 any day of the week for movies.
This is a single-DLP projector, which means it is sequential color, which in turn means it is capable of producing vile potentially headache-inducing rainbow effect (RBE) artifact. How does this UST projector perform in this regard?

I'm really interested in UST projectors at the moment, but it caught my attention when you said none of them do gaming well. I don't understand that. If I'm using an XBOX, let's say, the input/output is still just audio/video (via HDMI) as far as the projector is concerned, so what causes such significant lag in USTs? Without experiencing it, or seeing it, it's difficult for me to visualize how much lag 55ms would be. Is it like pulling the trigger and then half a second later the gun goes off, or is it more subtle than that? Do you know if UST developers are working on the game lag issue? Thanks for the review. Really informative and interesting. I'm in research mode at the moment, having a look at them all, but I think this may be my next living room upgrade.
