The Vocational Pre-Determination by God When I was a vocation director, I would visit the Catholic schools in my diocese to teach the children about vocations. I explained to them that before God had even created the world, he knew them and he loved them. He already knew your name, he knew every thought you would ever think, he knew how many hairs were on your head, he knew your sins, he knew your good deeds, and he even saw the moment of your death and your entrance into heaven. And God had already decided your vocation before he had even made the world! Or at least, he had already planned to which vocation you would be called. When it finally became time for you to be born, God created your soul to go inside your tiny body, and it was created specifically for that pre-determined vocation. I call this concept the vocational pre-determination by God, or vocational pre-destination. If God is calling you to marriage, then he prepared your soul and gave you the gifts of body and soul to live out the vocation of marriage. If God is calling you to priesthood, then your soul and body were made with that vocation in mind. This will be an important hint for you as you discern. Look at the gifts God has given to you and where those gifts are best used to build up the Kingdom.

To do anything less than the will of God for your life will bore you! During the French Revolution beginning in 1789, there was a great persecution of the Catholic Church in France. In 1793, the Reign of Terror began and many priests, nuns, and Catholic lay faithful were murdered because of their allegiance to the Catholic Church. Though they were killed in many different ways, the guillotine became most famous. There was one man who had a horrible hatred for priests and he bragged that he had killed thirty priests with his own hands. His preferred method of execution was to slit the throat. Some years after the Revolution had subsided, this man was old, sick, and dying. His wife, who had remained a practicing Catholic all along in secret, did not want her husband to go to hell, in spite of the terrible things he had done. But he would not hear of discussing religion, much less of repentance. So the wife asked a Catholic priest whom she knew to come. In these post-revolution days, priests still lived in hiding and went about in plain clothes secretly celebrating Mass in the homes of individual Catholics. The plain-clothed priest walked into the man’s bedroom and identified himself as a Catholic priest. The old man was lying on his bed, too weak to move, but his face became livid with rage and he screamed, “If I could get up, I would cut your throat!” And the priest calmly replied, “You already did. But God saved me so that I could save you.” The priest pushed down his shirt collar to reveal a long scar across his throat, reaching from ear to ear; a scar made by the knife of this very man. The old man was very moved by the magnanimity of this priest. He had tried to kill him. He had slit his throat and left him for dead. Yet now this priest would risk death again to try and save the man’s soul from hell. God’s grace touched his heart and the old man made his Confession and repented of his sins before he died. “God saved me so that I could save you.” I think there are many priests today who could say these words. There are so many priests who tried to throw away their vocation, to run away from it, either out of fear or selfishness, or both. Archbishop Robert Carlson once remarked at a symposium, “I am constantly amazed at the number of men who are priests who did everything in their power that they would not be.” I myself am one of these priests.
