Arch i have a 20092 Toro Super Recycler that i believe is a 2008 year model. I have had the rear wheel drive unit serviced two times in the 14 years i have owned the mower. I keep my mower clean & lube the zerk fittings on the back wheels every time i change oil. (every 20 hours) I also once a year remove all 4 wheels & clean & lubricate them. I do not take off the gears on the rear wheels however. I change my air filter 3 times a year or so and the plug once a year. (i save my old plugs) My 2 blades are interchanged / sharpened every 30 days. My mower (His name is Mordecai) starts on the first or second pull every single time. i mow my yard every 3 to 4 days during the growing season. It takes me about an hour to do the front and back yard. You have taught me a ton already about my mower & other mowers. I was able to repair a friends mower based on what i learned from watching you. Thank you again for the time you take to make these videos.
The Toro, especially the older models are my favorite to restore. You keep a tight schedule,,refreshing!! My Honda has a very similar rear drive system, I've tried dry lubes, They last about a season before I can notice drag Now I've taken to completely packing the system in grease, I pack behind the backing plate as well. I have a small cache of Toro's in the yard, soon to be looked at. Stay Tuned!
You have the best practical videos for us DIY mower enthusiasts out here! Have you worked on the newer Personal Pace transmissions (ex. p/n 144-0248)? They no longer have the one-way clutches in the gears that drive the wheels. So everything must be controlled by what's inside the tranny case. I have issues with my mower when I try to back up. It will work for a while and then hang up consistently for a while and on & on... I have even rigged a spring between the trans tensioning lever (same place the stock actuating cable attaches) and the bottom edge of the mower deck. This pulls the transmission back down to insure that there is slack in the drive belt when you are not pushing, but it does not solve the issue. I've owned Personal Pace mowers for 12 years and know how to adjust the cable properly. I also hear a clicking noise when the Personal Pace is engaged and driving the mower. I have heard the same exact comments from other users of this system. If anybody can solve this issue it's you! So do you know anything about this issue or what might be happening inside this transmission to cause this? Thanks in advance!
I have the Toro 22” recycler 163cc Briggs and Stratton. The engine cuts off when pace setter/self propel is engaged. I can engage the self propel with rear wheels off the ground, belt is good and functional, I can operate mower without self propel engaged- pain in the ass. I conducted full preventive maintenance before storage. What do
Hard to say, you say "Cut Off" does it shut off or start to stall? Does it cut the lawn, like can it spin the blade in tall grass under load without stalling? Could be the engine has an issue and the extra load is causing the engine issue.. If I had it I would find out but I would be checking literally everything like I normally do
I had to deal with the same problem after I had to replace one of the pinion gears. The reason of why the transmission isn't moving is because the gears were installed in the opposite direction. After I tried all the things you tried. I decided to swap the gears to the opposite direction and the problem was solved that easy! I know is tricky but finally I figured out.
When you were pushing the mower forward (without the engine running at around 14:00 on the video) and it didn't roll, was that because of the key not in the right spot or something else that was preventing it from moving forward freely?
Good catch, around 16 or so I say "The pawls were on wrong" it was getting late, I was tired and under the gun, basically the gears were swapped, I think they are marked L & R, they go on either way, swapping them made it function but I do remember that one of the handles had a broken return spring, not sure now if it was this machine, the spring is under the handle, if the cable doesnt return all the way it will lock the drive as well
I think you mean at the end I'm spraying clear on the machine... Check out my 'paintjucation' videos on my home page.. I have a folder and I show techniques on making these machines really nice.
Hello. I replaced the belt on this same model and for some reason the belt keeps coming off. I have adjusted the wire tensioner and keeps coming off few times each mow. It’s so annoying I don’t know if I need to try another belt or replace something else.
Hi Arch, i just replace the rear wheels and its pinions. it runs perfect, unfortunately after 30min. i notice a grinding sound inside the wheel. I pulled out the wheels & notice the washer, klipring lock & pinion came off. Is it normal for the shaft to move (or play) left & right about an inch? what should be the right clearance from the housing to the washer? The transmission is working fine. It seams the pinion misaligned from the gear of the wheel. What should I do to prevent this to happen again?
No, not normal, usually there is a second snap ring back by the adjuster. they can break... I need to make a few more vids on this with some good close-ups I find that the little paul or key and slot wear, that little spring looses its tension, the groove wears,,,,all from dirt and lack of lube and age... The right way is to start with a super clean shaft and parts all in good shape then use a dry lube,, gonna get some and do a few vids For play, not sure but an inch isn't good, I can say the play is small, maybe 1/8 or so... Sometimes the tranny and axle and its parts just wear out and its trash.
the gold piece that holds the tire on needs bent out wards for the pinion to line up on the wheels. if the inside of your wheel teeth are tore up then thats your issue. put a shim behind the gold plate where the wheel goes on to. this will bow the piece outwards and your gears on the tire will line up. also may need to put a washer behind the pinion to push it out slightly.
I disagree, They get real stuck, Ya gotta use some oil to get things working. I do agree that grease can be an issue, Most important is the seal on the wheel is OK From now on I want to try Chain Wax, It may be the best of both worlds, Goes on like a liquid to get in deep then dries. I'm not a Toro Dealer, I'm learning as well. Keep in mind the original greases didn't hold up well either. People here don't service their machines, they throw them out! Its not the Space shuttle, is a used machine and they don't sell for much
True that,,,Newer Vids are quieter, it gets kinda boring in the shop all day without some noise other than the air compressor and my babbling voice! Often some web radio or who knows is just playing. It isnt that loud I thought but these mics pic up
these toros are shit designs. i have 2 of them. one is about 9 years old i keep fixing for my mom. there is major flaws in the wheels and pinion design. then 2 days ago my belt popped off. so i had to pull the whole damn bottom apart just to put the friggen belt on. ive noticed looking at other models of toro they are constantly changing where the belt is and etc. one toro the self propel is in front one is in the back. both have issues. after i got the belt back on. fixed the wheels up, the self propel still dont work. adjusted the cable, its moving still dont work. opened the transmission and everything is fine, gears arent broke or chipped and i can move them into place with my finger. self propel still dont work. about to throw this god damn thing on craigslist and let someone else fuck with it and buy something else
There is a pin in the gearbox that might have fallen out. Open the box and go through the grease carefully with your fingers and hunt for it. If that is your problem it's pretty simple to fix.
I prefer the front drive versions, I may have mentioned it in this vid but in another I know I did. Rear drives are all problematic as they age and get dirty! Can be hard to service compared to front drive models
@@TheNovaJohn I might prefer them as well but what I am rebuilding now is a model 20031 that I used to cut my grass with in the 90s when I was still a fairly young man. I wore the thing out. All four wheels are broken so I have new ones ordered along with new pinions and bearings. I'm tempted to buy a new transmission as well since they are only about $57.00. Yes, it's a bit of a pain to work on but when you think about it, these things are still around when most junk sold out there lives a few seasons and is off to the dump.
Really enjoy your channel. You’re well spoken and thorough.
Thanks wes!! wow this is one of my 1st videos, I certainly hope I've gotten better!

"It's a clutch" That told me what I've been searching for in several videos. Thank you!
Hopefully you can solve your issues,,, That's an older video now, I have new camera's and I'm getting better at this!
Thanks for braving the video lol

Nice,, I think in a later video I actually say that; if it doesnt work one way, swap e'm!
Nice machines, very durable, generally very restorable!
There is a R/L on gears

Mint job on that one, cheers for the info
Thanks,, I have another on the subject as well! I really want to make a real series on on these machines. it takes time and practice
What brand and type was the spray ??
I think you mean at the end I'm spraying clear on the machine...

Try a new belt,, make sure its the correct one,,,there should be a belt guard that also keeps the belt aligned, check that, they wear!
Arch's Garage it calls for the belt and does have the guard on. Is it possible I have been tension to strong

I'm here to replace the spring and of course i can see it gish
Nice video!
What is the model of that Toro?
Ohh not sure,, this was one of my 1st vids and I've done sooo many since
It said rear drive work. Where is it?
where is what?
Turn off back ground radio/TV while recording in session...ok?
Yea, I keep telling myself that!
Apply DRY LUBE ONLY there. If you slather with grease or oil, you are looking at a time bomb.
I disagree, They get real stuck, Ya gotta use some oil to get things working.

This was a fookin' comedy to watch for a guy that knows how to install the pinions! Baahahaaa!!!!
Man you really need to quiet the background. What is with all the talking?
