The A500 Mini: My Honest Thoughts and Testing WHDLoad Games | Part 1
- In this video I will share my thoughts and personal experience with the A500 Mini, transmit the feeling and interaction with the accessories included and showcase some games. But not the ones bundled with the system! Those are specifically configured to work flawlessly on the Mini! So, instead, I'll be featuring a random selection of titles that I’ve added and that are amongst my favorites that I recall playing back in the day.

Some of the glitches you can remove if you go into the advanced options for the emulation while playing non-supported games.
Thanks for the tip ;) I'll try that!
I love mine, a big nostalgia rush when I opened the box. Playing battle chess, stunt car racer and Defender of the crown again is brilliant 😊 currently on Secret of Monkey Island and The Chaos Engine which I missed first time around 👍🏻
Awesome! Thanks for sharing, Rik! :)
You should look up and see if you are able to use the speech from the Special Edition on the Amiga version. I know they have patches that add the speech into older versions. I'm not sure if the Amiga version is supported but it is worth checking out.
Enjoy Monkey Island!
This was great! I have a lot of nostalgia for the Amiga. Glad you included Indianapolis 500, I loved that game! You gained a subscriber :)
Thank you so much for the support, Stephen! Enjoy the content!
Cheers!
Glad to see plenty of the games tested out well on the machine. Leander looked really cool; hadn't seen that game before. Glad to see you have fun with the system overall.
As for the controller thing, I certainly don't share your issues. The A500 Mini pad has been perfectly comfortable for me to use, certainly over a joystick (which I admittedly never used with my Amiga back in the day; I was one of those who hooked up a Mega Drive controller to the system). I'm also not fond of the PS4 controller, so it also wouldn't be my go-to controller option.
Thank you so much for your feedback! :) Truly appreciate it!
Hell yeah! I was really looking forward to your review! Thanks a lot for your opinion, it's good to know the PS4 controller works flawlessly. And thank you especially to try out a few "random games" to see how the emulation copes with them. It looks amazing on some games, but very glitchy on others. Hopefully the firmware can be updated in the future! I'll definitely buy this Amiga Mini some time in the future, maybe after some amazon sale. Cheers! And that Bomberman music is soooo catchy!
I believe that the PS3 controller also works. Have to check that ;)
Thank you so much for stopping by, Ivo! I will surely bring more content on the Mini :)
Grande abraço!
Really cool.
I love the mini consoles, and it is great to see the iconic Amiga getting its own mini.
Thanks for sharing Pixel, and enjoy.
Now we need a MS-DOS mini "console" ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing The eXo 😅
@@itsaPIXELthing Hahaha :D
Well, there was actually a project going on for that.
@@RetroRaider Indeed, there is ;)
Been looking forward to your video and review as I know how much u love the amiga .
I think it's a great system that with a few firmware updates will be even better , the joy pads terrible for diagonals so I've been using a wired ps3 controller instead
I added lots so far . Battle squadron, turrican series , r type , lotus challenge , moon stone plus a few ocean games toki. Midnight resistance , pang
Ahhhh! I've also added all my favorite Ocean games :) And those you've mentioned also! :) Have to feature them in my next video :)
By the way, tried to run Cabal and it asked me to press F1 or F2 key (1 or 2 players). I thought I could bring up the virtual keyboard, but I was wrong. I need a USB keyboard to play Cabal, just for that. Have you tried it?
@@itsaPIXELthing hi the keyboard issue is a known bug with games u add. Think u just have exit the game go into the setting screen and reload and it will then work .
Ah! Ok! :) Thanks for your reply ;)
Great video again! 🤓 Maybe can you turn on some crt filter next time to bring back the original like visuals? 😉
Sure 😊 thanks for watching!
Keep the good work.
Cool review! I also prefer a thumbstick to a d-pad, but an analog thumbstick isn't as good as a digital one. The problem is that it's really hard to find a digital thumbstick controller.
I'm lucky because I have a Neo Geo CD style Playstation controller, and a Playstation to USB adapter. (Unlike the more recent Neo Geo Mini controller, this older controller had the old school "clicky" stick.)
The only thumbstick I like even more, that I've tried, is the Neo Geo Pocket thumbstick. But AFAIK this thumbstick was only ever available when attached to a NGP or NGPC. And I'm not in any rush to destroy one of my NGPCs to turn it into controller for other stuff.
Nice :) Thanks for sharing that, Isaac! :)
Grande vídeo, adorei! 😝
Cumprimentos
I just tried something "crazy" on A500 Mini. Xbox Series X controller works wired on the Mini using the Mayflash NS adapter made for Nintendo Switch. The adapter have 6 modes. Works in "Turkish" light mode. Home buttons etc. also works like the included CD32 pad.
Switch Pro Controller did not work on Mini with or without adapter as only one button were detected, and directional didn't work.
Cool ;)
I really appreciate that you immediately addressed the crappy controller issue. I wonder if my Playstation Classic (mini) controller would work with the A500 mini?
I don't have the ps classic mini :( Can't confirm that, Rob. Sorry
@Jess I agree. I would love to be able to connect my speedking joystick somehow.
When I downloaded old Amiga games onto my PC my IT mate got a USB adaptor for my retro Joystick and Bang was playing games exactly how I used to. Would this not work here with the A500 Mini?
Some people say that it will work. But I can't confirm that 100%. I'm yet to grab one of those adaptors.
I did the whole Frankinstien thing on my a500 mini aswell.
Great vid as always ! Could you please tell me how to enable some of the whdload game trainers? The screen shows me only for a short time what I may choose but then it disappears before I can scroll to the mid of the display to select the trainers. Stick and mouse do not work here. Is this only possible with USB keyboard? Thanks a lot.
Wepl is working on a joystick selector menu for the splash screens to enable the trainer options. So it's coming, but he's a busy man!
@@Codetapper Thanks ! So now it is impossible to choosectrainers. Right ?
@@angelheart7643 Only by setting tooltypes in the icons I guess.
Hello Sir. Just wondering what's the name of the module playing at the end of the video please.
It's the same at the beginning, and the name is in the description ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing Thank you.
You're not wrong about the controller being bad. It is.
You're probably experiencing the fatigue from the long travel of the dpad.
Saying that, I think it's also a bit crazy that you're using analogue sticks when it expects a digital input.
Definitely look into getting a Amiga db9 > usb converter so you can use your Amiga joystick- it can be glorious! 🙂
Will that work with my Maverick arcade stick? Wow! Have to get that ASAP! :)
Thanks for the tip ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing in our a500mini review we made our own. Will be comparing alternatives in the future.
Wow! Just subscribed to you! :) Gonna check it out :) Thanks!
@@itsaPIXELthing Thanks man. BTW Yes, it would work with your maverick. There are couple of ready built options available too. We have ordered them to compare and find best solution.
Is it possible to have it the other way around? I mean a USB>db9, so that I can use any generic USB controller on my real amiga 500?
Good review. Hope you can get a replacement or at least a solution for the controller.
I'm getting tons of feedback in relation to the controller. It is, indeed, crappy and rubbish ;)
Would love to see desrt and jungle strikes too! 😜
Love both those games ;) Thanks for reminding me!
I love the 500 mini it's great to play Amiga games on the big screen and from the couch
Right? That's its real purpose :) Cheers, Roy!
Bom vídeo. Sugestões para o futuro: Experimentar jogos recentes para o Amiga no Amiga mini; Experimentar Jogos DOS no Amiga; e, óbvio, ‘can it run Doom?’.
Cool ;) Thanks for your suggestion ;)
the prodigal son has returned!!
For a long time I thought every game on the Amiga was an Amiga original 😅 It was all about c64/Amiga and playstation for me, and it still is😅
I thought the same back then. lol
It doesn’t even feel like that long ago when Commodore ruled the world.. And A500’s were all the craze.. I actually used lots of my old bank account as a kid to fund one..
I truly believe in an alternate dimension our mobile phones now all say Amiga with their little logo instead of Apple or Samsung..
That would be awesome 😎
The ultimate benchmark would probably be Lionheart by Thalion... Great video as usual btw.
Yeah! Lionheart is so awesome! :)
Thanks. Good video. I like THE Gamepad but yeah I guess it's a bit stiff. The Competition Pro CD32 pad still beats it IMHO but yeah there's a place for a good old ZipStick for these thrashing around games like Speedball 2. I always played with a pad though as I had a CD32. I played with a stick for Double Dragon and Golden Axe on my Atari ST so those games feel weird.
Eh eh eh eh! :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience, Big D! Take care!
I’m sure it will loosen up in time.
Test Lionheart. I remember that one being one of the most graphically impressive games I had on the A500.
Indeed it was :) Such a great game and exclusive to the Amiga ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing For sure. It was actually one of the only games I had original in box LOL. XD
Cool :)
For games that are running too fast... edit config file of a particular game (.uae file) using notepad on PC... add the following two lines... cpu_speed=real cpu_type=68000 (NB: do not enter settings in A500 mini afterwards as it will overwrite your edits). Works great for Operation Wolf, Buggy Boy, Space Harrier etc.
Thanks, Batman ;)
I was thinking of getting the Amiga Mini but decided on a more powerful raspberry pi 400 instead. I will be adding my Amiga games to that and overclocking it. This is great for plug and play though. 👍
That's a pretty awesome alternative! No doubt! :) Thanks for sharing!
@@itsaPIXELthing I might even get a mini down the line because i do like style of it. 😆

It looks quite a nice machine to be fair, and the box it arrives in reminds me a little bit of the Amiga Cartoon Classics pack that was such a popular seller. However, much as I'd like to own one, is there much point in spending the cash? I have a Dell workstation and a Lenovo laptop that both easily emulate the Amiga range of computers using WinUAE, so other than a half-size version of the Amiga for the money, I can't see any benefits. Besides, no great technology is required to run Amiga games in this day and age, and there's not a great deal of actual hardware to be seen under the Amiga's plastic casing, once it's been stripped down....so is it really worth the price anyway? Think I'd rather wait to see if a full-size replica A500 (or even the A1200 model) with fully functioning keyboard and built-in Workbench OS becomes available. Now, that just might tempt me....
That would be incredible :) And yeah, it really resembles (a little) that cartoon classics pack :)
@@itsaPIXELthing Thanks for your reply, and I'm glad you agree that is does look (just a little bit) like the Cartoon Classics pack. Funny thing is, the new Amiga's box doesn't feature any Lemmings or Captain Planet, so I'm not sure why either of us think there's a vague similarity, lol! By the way, I'd like to add that, if a full-size Amiga is released (I'd prefer the A1200 design personally, as it's more compact), then a small capacity, internal SSD drive would be a nice feature. Failing that, it would be nice if the machine were designed so that you could easily install one yourself. Furthermore, a proper Zipstik, rather than that dodgy 'CD32-style' pad would also be welcome...after all, us oldies want the authentic experience, and would probably be willing to pay for it PROVIDING that they got the design right, first time of asking. Finally, my friend, I meant to say thank you for your interesting video in my previous post, so apologies for that. Greetings from England, and keep up the good work. 👍
@@Turrican60 Appreciate it! Thank you so much for your kindness! Cheers!
Pretty cool and nice added games, thx for sharing....
And dont controller....well....
Thanks, mate ;)
i also bought one and i love it, im playing a lot of Moonstone these last couple of days, i didn't know Leander but it looks very very good and i will definitely play it ,thanks
Yeah, Moonstone is amazing! :) Thanks for watching!
I find the gamepad difficult to use. Not easily being able to get the diagonal direction which you can easily get with joystick. Many games do need that. I am also using ps4 controller.
Thanks for your feedback, Tom! Cheers!
Looks good but waiting for a Maxi version.
Let's hope! :) Thanks for stopping by, Doug!
Cool
very cool classic mini, and this what you do with hack talking good things, more games i like on real mini, bomberman, worms, stunt car is amazing,Indy500 and Lotus 3 who´s i play it on computer like kid
Thanks for sharing your thoughts :) I'm really enjoying the system :)
Maybe with fast-copper the sound is fixed with big run. Try that.
Thanks for the tip, Marco! :)
You should try Street Rod 1&2.
Thanks for the tips ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing Lol no problem. The Street Rod series is about my only experience with the Amiga. Back around 2000 the dos versions were on the school computers. At home I looked the game up and eventually found out their was an Amiga version and the graphics and sound were wayyyy better than the DOS version! It took me forever on WinUAE to get them working as I knew very little about the Amiga. Actually earlier this year I played the Amiga version of SR1 and it was kind of a pain to get going. Pretty much every other game I tried fired right up but I had to do some weird thing with SR to get it to actually run correctly. So it'd be interesting to see if it will run on the mini.

Mr PLANdemic loves A500 Mini.
Amiga forever!
And ever! :)
Think ill stick with the super console x king has all the amiga games..
You got a pretty awesome system, no doubt ;)
Mesmo...
It's a shame those issues you talked about. I guess someone o lived the real thing will notice every little difference.
Yep. But I'm sure that these issues will gradually disappear, thanks to the incredible Amiga community ;)
Looks beautiful but a small mouse isn't great (full size please), gamepad good I guess but I wouldnt use (comfort also), interface nice but underpowered ARM CPU compared to Pi3 or Pi4 so I suspect better off with a Pi based Amiberry system (no hacks needed and runs EVERYTHING) unless you don't look at the screen and just spend all your time looking at the case and NOT using the darn thing. So, expensive paperweight IMHO
Yeah, it's really sad that it came down to a simple underpowered little system. Even so, a handful of games that I used to play, back in the day, on my real Amiga 500 (and more recently on my A600) are also playable here. And I'm discovering more as we speak. But, as said in the video, the gamepad is rubbish and I wished it came with a joystick, or arcade-style stick, instead.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
This is the only UA-camr I’ve heard complain about the controller. Retro Recipes showed off in his videos how the A500 Mini outpaced the Pi4. It’s not about horsepower, it’s about the specialized software.
I love real Amiga classic and new AmigaOS4 on real modern hardware. This A500 not real and very slow for all new features software 3D 🤦♂️
You're absolutely right. Thanks for leaving your thoughts ;)
I want to like this device but I don’t know…. It looks more like a glorified emulator. I still have my original 1200 but I mostly play on pc via Amiga Forever. Dunno if this offers more? Certainly not a new good gamepad.
Yeah, the gamepad is rubbish. Sadly. But it's nice to have the chance to add our favorite whdload games ;)
This has the bad crap games that comes with this mini and isn't giving you any of the greatest amiga games its a con wast of money and another product that don't work right and needs updating but at lest the took your money first before bring there mini out working as it should with other amiga games that isn't built in
It's complicated when you have a ton of different developers and publishers releasing stuff for the Amiga. It was a licensing nightmare for the guys behind the 500 mini project.
Thanks for your feedback ;)
@@itsaPIXELthing They should of done all the research first to find what games they can get before hand and see if its worth making the product.
This is what we got crap games that isn't worth the price there so poor no one would want to play them . Your better of buying the Amiga second hand or amiga raspberry pi if you want to get the games you want
You're absolutely right. But we all have to keep in mind that the other mini consoles also had poor lineup of games. It's hard to bundle a list of games that can please everyone. Even so, and to keep it clear, I totally agree with you. Only 2 or 3 games from the 25 games included are amongst my favorites on the Amiga ;)
Cheers!
@@itsaPIXELthing This was why i was so angry with this project i wanted Hybrids battle squadron Xenon 2 Megablast Bubble bobble StarRay Menace Sidewinder Starwars. These was just some of the greatest classic games for the Amiga and shows of what the visuals it could do for it's time along with the great music track.
But instead we got the worst of the lowest trash and they should be ashamed of themselves its just embarrassing to think this is what the best they could come up with and isn't worth getting the licensing for and they still went out and made the mini
