This is encouraging. I can fit everything into my suv, home depot can cut the boards for me, I can carry it, and I know how to drill holes for the bungy cords. Doing everything by yourself (no complaints, I'm happy) can be challenging, but there's always a way if you try. Just started gardening a year ago; I've learned you can reach any goal if you're willing to put effort and time into it. Gary's videos have helped me enormously!

These low tunnels have been such a blessing for me! My hubby and I built 3 in less than one hr. They were going to be used to get our early spring plants in and protected, but we found another use for them. We were in the 70’s (zone 5b) and enjoying spring weather, when a cold snap hit and we got into the 20’s at night with 3 inches of snow! I had winter sown jugs (143 of them) that had sprouted and were almost ready to be planted. So instead of putting the spring crops in we opted to protect those jugs. We were able to get all the jugs under those 3 frames. I put a thermometer inside and checked it throughout the day. It kept the temperature between 10-15 degrees higher than the outside temp even with the snow. Hopefully, that saved our tomato and pepper sprouts. I don’t want to uncover them yet as we still have one more night in the high 20’s. Thank you so much for making this video!
Nice use. I really love these. I moved mine to my potato sprouts as we might get frost tonight. Hi Gary, excellent idea. When your plants grow in your polycarbonate tunnels besure to place a floating grow fleece over your plant leaves in cold weather. The ice will develop on the inside of your tunnel, its' normal, bc of condensation, and the plants will do better during the cold like we've just had. I've been using a simular design and have been harvesting full sized Bok Choi, spinach, collards, kales, and celantro. Plants will need 2-4 wks of time added to maturity date bc of slower growth rate.. The benifit of fresh leafy greens in winter is amazing. Blessings.

I've done something similar to this for seed starting outdoors but my issue was night time temps, it just got to cool inside the tunnel, so I put a string christmas lights inside and turned them on at night. Everyone has plenty laying around. Kept it just warm enough. Works wonderfully. Once it warmed up and my spouts were established I just picked up lights. Also any color lights worked, lol, believe me. My garden area was lit up.

Gary- For a forecast of unusually cold temps... One modification to get double insulation on the single wide panels would be to use quater round nailed to the ouside edge of the 7 ft long pieces to "spring hold" a second piece of Suntuff which would then give you a double walled dome with an air space in between. Secure it with a second set of bungy chords. It's possible 1/2 or 3/4 in quarter round might work. A really heavy wet snow might compress the outer dome down some, but you could place a couple of small wooden or foam blocks along the apex of the inner dome for support to keep the air space.

You can do away with the 2x4s if you use a large loop of twine or wire that penetrates two holes in opposite sides of the panel where you show the bungee cords. You can then cinch them up into an arch, or loosen them so they lie flat for storage depending on the need.

Gary- @4:28 Re: the double wide Suntuf Panels, condsider bending them over heavy gague wire hoops or gray 3/4 in elec pvc conduit. Might be cheaper & less fussy than building wooden support end frames. If you are putting down the double-wide directly on soil you could drive long tent stakes to hold the bungy chords. After removing the Suntuf Panels, the hoops could stay in place to support row cover, netting or shade cloth. The hoops would be easier to store than wooden frames. I hate UV treated plastic because it is ultimately weak. A growing system based in Suntuf or Tufftex Panels is appealing.

@@taxigirl5637 Those who winter sow often use milk jugs & soda bottles with the cap off to vent hot air & let in rain/snow. Cool weather crops winter sown can take that. Of course a protracted hard freeze would be damaging to most plants, vented or not. You sow your seeds & takes your chances.

I have had my house taken over with seedlings so my husband is building a cattle panel hoop house as my Christmas present. I have been looking for an easy way to do a double cover so that I can try starting tomatoes and such from seed outdoors. (Last frost May 3) This is AWESOME! I liked the one with the 2 pieces of poly because the frames will take less room to store and the frames can double as support, maybe an extra in the middle of bed, for insect netting over my brassicas. So excited!!

So just to be sure, I first need to put this in the garden to help heat up the soil, maybe a week or two, then plant the seeds under it until it gets warm enough to remove the polycarbonate (or keep the polycarbonate on for as long as the plants fit to give them a greenhouse effect). Very cool. Thank you.
Generally speaking yes. However, you can set it up and plant seeds right away. They are in the top inch. So this will warm it quickly. I am setting it up 2 weeks early for transplants that are going into the ground. They will go further in the ground. This also provides the frost protection immediately. Great design. You could screw the poly to the inside and it will be just a movable lid. Screw another layer outside for more insulation. Or drill two small holes in the poly to just hook it on the nails, screws or hooks, inside or out so you don't need the cords to hold down.

I had my heart set on a proper walk-in greenhouse but at the moment it is beyond my budget to buy or build something sturdy enough for my rural, high-wind exposed site. I have a few of the soft plastic small greenhouses but they have to be placed in particular spots against fences or sheds to protect from the wind. The plastic only lasts two years at best, and it seems silly to buy new covers when they cost almost as much as buying an entire kit. It feels wasteful and like it's only a matter of time before I lose an entire batch of plants if they are blown over. Also, mice and rats get into them in autumn when food starts to become scarce, and it's impossible to exclude them. I was feeling disheartened yesterday and spent the evening searching for ideas before finally stumbling on this video (been a subscriber for a while but hadn't seen this one). I love this idea. They're low to the ground and stable, so they won't have to be staked down or placed against a fence to be safe. I can move to any convenient spot to take advantage of winter sun, or shift to a more sheltered spot as the weather warms up. I can sit them on a piece of mesh or solid surface and wedge mesh at the two ends to exclude rodents. I'm thinking I could change out the poly for a panel of wire mesh covered in shade cloth for summer seedlings or as a low shade tunnel row cover for greens or young plants - moving to a different spot as needed. I really like the option of storing the panels flat if not needed - unlike a permanent cold frame or hoop house. It's not the grand, walk-in greenhouse of my dreams, but it is a simple, inexpensive, portable, and very wind resistant way that I can raise my seedling flats, which is my priority at the moment. Wind safety ranks above convenience and charm 😆 I would rather have something that is slightly less convenient to access but allows me to sleep at night knowing that I won't wake up to find my greenhouse blown away. And if it turns out to be unsuitable for me then I've only spent $60 instead of hundreds (or thousands), and I can just reuse the frame and the poly for something else. I'm so excited to make a couple of these up and see how they go!
The low ground does help stabilize the temps. Good luck getting the greenhouse sooner than later. Thanks... Here is how you can support me, more videos, and The Rusted Garden...

Great Tip. LOL on the Holiday Garden.

Gary-
For a forecast of unusually cold temps...
Thanks so much

Great idea! Could also be used for winter sowing by drilling small holes on the top to allow rain and melting snow to enter to keep seed bed moist.
You can do away with the 2x4s if you use a large loop of twine or wire that penetrates two holes in opposite sides of the panel where you show the bungee cords. You can then cinch them up into an arch, or loosen them so they lie flat for storage depending on the need.

@4:28 Re: the double wide Suntuf Panels, condsider bending them over heavy gague wire hoops or gray 3/4 in elec pvc conduit.

Maybe try to come up with a way where you can also use it during the summer with shade cloth for areas that are hot.
Indeed! Almost the same plan but add some pool noodles for support
That could work.

I saw this on another of your videos I think and used it for my potatoes and tomatoes when we got a bit of late spring cold temps. It was great. I was able to start them earlier knowing I had the frost protection if I needed it. I'll be making a couple more for the fall/winter.
Sweet idea. Not a huge need for it in LA, but it may still come in handy. Thanks.
True. But it is fun.

This will work for sure. Enjoy your hoop house

Yeah I might do that for one or two that would stay in the garden. I could test out the longevity of the polycarb.

Very impressed! This would be perfect for my area of Minnesota. I start seedling early and then have to wait for the weather to warm up, which here means that the next week it can drop again and I have to be running around bringing plants back inside (not easy at 74, lol). That could work just great.
Ill be prewarming beds with this. Working on a modification.

Great easy fix TY!
Yep
