Awesome video, first time taking apart differential guts, I marked out everything as you described and everything fell into place. Didn’t even use a dial indicator backlash felt the same as factory when everything was re assembled. Thanks a lot for the video.
Just got an '86 tin top with SOA, hydraulic power steering, Weber, header and 32s. I've watched all of your videos. I don't have the experience or nerve to do everything you have but I value all of your ideas. Very entertaining and informative.
Dude, you can do it! I'm just a regular dude with no training. My thinking is, just try it. If you can't figure it out, take it to the pros. You can probably do it yourself and if you can't you were gonna pay them anyways. Get to know your machine really well working on! 🤙🏻
Love the videos, man! Also a member of SSO2.0. I was wondering how well the Sami drives on road with the mini-spool in the rear? I'm doing a spartan in the front of mine as well. But I drive mine on the road a good bit. Are you having any issues turning with the locked rear diff?
Thanks for watching dude. I just picked up a spartan and side gears for the rear. The spool has been horrible on road. Off road it has a tendency to make the rear tires slide side to side. Great in a heavier vehicle but I think the Samurai is too light and too short.
@@FortuneOffRoad definitely keep us posted (with a video, of course) on the rear spartan install. And the reasoning for the switch and subsequent review on how it performs. Our builds are going to be VERY similar. And maybe one day we'll get to wheel together.
After wheeling with the spartan locker in the front are you having trouble steering in 4low? I'm about to do this same setup in mine but I'm afraid without power steering itll be tough to turn if the wheels lock up
Yeah, its hard. Most of the time its okay as long as you're moving, but at a stand still it's close to impossible sometimes. I still wouldn't give it up though, rather, I need to find some sort of power steering or hydro assist setup. 🤘🏻
Thanks dude! The spool is very noticeable on the street. If I could go back I would go with my original plan of spool front, spartan rear, or Spartans in both.
@@FortuneOffRoad I had a spool in the front of my Sammi with power steering and it was a pain . The tires just wanted to go straight, swapped it out for a lock right locker and loved it!!!
I have a spartan in the rear of mine. If I wanted to put the spartan in front and a minus pool in the rear. Are the differential housings interchangeable. Meaning. Can I take my complete rear with spartan and install it in the front. So I only have one differential to build?
you just need some OEM 26 spline side gears to match the spools 26 spline - not a bad idea anyways if you go true selectable (arb, etc) in the future. This will require 26 spline aftermarket shafts though which you should get anyways with a locker up front comsidering stock sammy front shafts are crappy.
So I just installed Spartan lockers front and rear I'm curious if I did something wrong but does yours "pop" or "ratchet" when you are not driving but parked turning he wheel all the way left to right back and forth?
@@FortuneOffRoad so this is hubs locked I have picked up one tire and it's fine but both on ground and it acts like the locker it "ratcheting". I just didn't think not moving and turning had enough counteractive spinning to" pop"the locker. But maybe it is just how they are
@@FortuneOffRoad and that's also an issue I don't think a lot of people do it while it's parked ...it's one of those things that I did and I can't get it to leave my mind LOL. I highly recommend the power steering I got mine off eBay I believe it was out of a Toyota Yaris $220 shipped to my door with that fancy new Lincoln welder you have you'll be just fine it was very simple.
I have a suzuki samuria 1988 and when i took the rear driver side axle off to change a seal it wont go back in, it feels like its in all the way but when i spin it, it doesnt turn the drive shaft like the other side does
Fortune Off-Road I don’t know what you mean by the shift being seated in the side gear? Are you talking about the gear in the differential because if so I’d imagine I am the axle is in as far as it will go
@@yobubba101 yeah the shaft needs to be line up with the side gear to go in. It can be tricky to line up. If you look at my rear axle assembly video you can see what it should look like when it's all the way in.

your videos are so detailed, love it
then realized why the lockers are so much from pros
Great video. Informative and insightful. Even I understood it. and that's saying something.
Thanks Steve! Let me know when you're ready to start building a rockcrawler!
good information, I never understood better now. thanks i like your channel
Thanks dude! Glad you like it.
Good day awsome advice the bearing cap must that go tight on the bearing
So far these little Samurai axles have held up well!
nice, can u record a video to see their function on the road? really nice vid by ensambling, i like it
Sure thing! I'll definitely report back and let everyone know how they are performing on and off road.

you earned a sub good sir
nice work 🙏
Where did you get your mini sport for the rear end?
I believe it was Low range off road
Nice video, how does the Samurai drives with that spool on the rear on the street?

The rear side gears are 26 spline and the stock fronts are 22 spline. So I think you would need to break them open anyways. Hope that helps.

Way not just weld the sider gears??
Wanted to have the option to swap out for a Spartan later on. Now I'm doing that in my next Samurai video.
