  • The Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) we found in this park in Oskemen, Kazakhstan on 24 May 2024 were lifers for us! That means that we had never seen one before. When bird watchers like us find a lifer, it’s thrilling.
Fieldfares are closely related to American Robins (Turdus migratorius), and Fieldfares are, like robins, common birds. But they aren’t common to a Californian who lives 12 time zones away from them!
We were lucky enough to see scores of lifers during our monthlong visit to Central Asia. Many of those birds were rare or rarely seen. Although Fieldfares are common where they occur, they held a mystique for us that lasts to this day.
This gorgeous bird made our day. I hope it makes your day better too. Let me know in the comments.
