already left by then...the Kabaka, eh? my family knew him well but I never met him...grew up under his leadership after independence...in some areas he had a good plan but his socialist policies drove the middle class overseas and the rest as they say is history...went back last year and was both appalled and quite sad...recent electoral events have given us renewed hope...God Bless Guyana
Kevron101 I don't know that he was all that socialist. The policies he proposed (and Jagan as well) were more or less policies that were adopted om Trinidad and Jamaica. But remember, this was at the height of the cold war. I have always maintained that they were foolish to talk so much about friendship with Russia, given the international political situation. Much of what they were trying to do was to mitigate the gross inequalities of the colonial era - Eric Williams and Norman Manley saw the same, and in some cases even grater, inequalities. But they didn't cast their arguments in terms of what Russia had or had not done and the evils of capitalism - which was guaranteed to raise the hackles of the US. Have you ever read the White Paper published by the British Government on the 1953 suspension of the Constitution? One of the crimes of the PPP (which at the time was a united party of both Indo- and Afro-Guyanese) was that they proposed to change the curriculum of the schools. Speaking as one who grew up on The Royal Victoria Readers, and West Indian Readers that included poetry like Cophetua and the Beggar Maid ("Her arms across her breast she laid, She was more fair than words can say, Barefooted came the beggar maid Before the King Cophetua... In robe and crown the King stepped down To meet and greet heron her way") and pounds, shillings and pence (one benefit, I suppose, is that I can multiply by 24 without even thinking, necause on eof the things we learned was - "1 shilling 24cents, 2 shillings 48 cents, 3 shillings 72 cents etc. etc. etc) I, for one, think that a revision of the curriculum was long overdue. When I read History at what was then the University College of the West Indies (it was an overseas college of the University of London) we had ONE course on West Indian History - conducted by Dr Elsa Goveia, and a most fascinating course it was. But we had 2 on British History and 2 on European History and one on the US and Latin America combined. Certainly, in the years since independence, we've adopted all the concepts that led the PP of 1953 to champion educational change. However, while many of the middle class who migrated may have talked about fears of Socialism, much of that was in fact an indelible attachment to the kind of colonial education to which they were accustomed. Even when we reached the point of setting up the Caribbean Examinations Council in the 70s many did not want to abandon the Oxford and Cambridge General Certificate of Education. Also, I am sorry to say, many were also deeply offended by the thought of "coolies" and "black" people taking over the highest reaches pf the government. I grew up calling myself "colored" and indeed the certificate that was issued when my birth was registered, which I shall always keep as I find so many people think this incredible, describes my parents as "Mixed native of British Guiana" . Burnham, to his credit, ended that practice, and the newer certificate that I received sometime in the eighties, merely describes them as being native of Guyana. Many of that 1953 generation were idealistic; but idealism with out a healthy dose of realpolitik is usually a disaster waiting to happen.
fascinating stuff, Pat...i both understood and enjoyed your points of view and cant say that i would challenge anything ...pretty right on for the most part but when you look at National Service (a Burnham brainchild), one can only say that it was rooted in the Soviet style... and that was also by the way, another catalyst for the middle class exodus...so back to my socialist comment.... heh heh
Kevron101 Well actually the UK had a National Service too, except that theirs was purely military. Ours was just pseudo military - with military officers running it like a boot camp. In fact, most of the soldiers who marched into British Guiana in 1953 looking as though they thought they were going to participate in World War III were Nat. Service conscripts - some from the slums of the major cities (a fact that many of the oh-so-well-brought-up young ladies who hung over the railings of Government House to attract their attention failed to appreciate, I think. Some who married soldiers on the assumption that British and white must be right got a rude awakening when they arrived "home"! And by the way, contrary to the statements made by the British, both then and when they tried to justify the suspension in their White Paper, things were really quite calm on the day the suspension was announced by the Governor. I rode to school as usual and heard the announcement on people's radios on the way. And having put some of the leaders in jail all that then happened was that they searched various people's homes for "subversive literature" - meaning anything even remotely socialist. And then I went to University and found that I had to study the writings of that nineteenth century writer by the name of Karl Marx - the arch subversive of all subversives!!!!!
He was starving people and had people in oppression while he brought in the best foreign stuff for himself and his family.God s as id enough was enough and took him out early.
Linden Forbes was one heck of a president. I am so glad i wasn't born in that time. After hearing stories of how corrupt and evil he was, I thank God that he is dead and gone. The only thing about burnham that i admired was the eloquency in his speech and how brilliant his mind was. But, him banning flour and any foreign goods while his wife shopped in barbados and his family ate heartly was just wrong..Him banking all those pensioners money into switzerland's bank for his family was just plain evil..killing anyone who disagreed with him...completely misusing his position and power FOR WHAT...not much has changed because this current ppp/c government are just as bad. Guyana should've been more prosperous now than it's current state. Guyana WAS the breadbasket of the caribbean..now look at it...but i am still proud to be GUYANESE.
+Jew Jew He created an enabling environment for persons like yourself to walk tall and be proud and you call him wicked why, to gain acceptance ? you don't know squat about the man, he made mistakes true enough but don't demonize someone who helped put Guyana on the map. When it comes to flour being banned you don't know half the story anyway the world now accepts that wheaten flour with its gluten is quite unhealthy. What pensioners money was shipped to Swiss Account? You ever heard pensioners not receiving monies because it was all gone? Try to reason for yourself.
He also banned potatoes and sardine, if I recalled correctly. ONLY the EXTREME WICKED would baned food, Only the wicked like you will accept such wickedness. May God deprive you and your family exactly according to your belief. Does this fact makes you happy now?
When I visited Guyana I was wondering disappointed at the neglect. Burnham paid off their debts do why couldn't the opposition improve on it. They could have improved on education and training for the people. They could have improved on the LINDEN HIGHWAY

E was no honest leader get ur history right all he did was run guyana bankrupt and rig all the election under his dictatorship until America said it was enough
For a second I thought he allowed nothing to be brought into the country.
People were starving and suffering when he died.Good riddance to bad rubbish. We couldn't get a slice of bread to eat.He was an arrogant ass who thought he would live forever. His children were ashamed to carry his name fearing ridicule because of what he did.
Thanks to God Almighty for such a Great Leader, now an Angel watching over this Great Nation. He was and still is the best of the best. RIP Great Leader.God knows best.
no country can make you rich you as citizen have to make your bed to sleep on

already left by then...the Kabaka, eh? my family knew him well but I never met him...grew up under his leadership after independence...in some areas he had a good plan but his socialist policies drove the middle class overseas and the rest as they say is history...went back last year and was both appalled and quite sad...recent electoral events have given us renewed hope...God Bless Guyana
I think in those day the people was worship their president Burnham more that God for I remember how exciting we were to turn page of Burnham face
He was starving people and had people in oppression while he brought in the best foreign stuff for himself and his family.God s as id enough was enough and took him out early.
There is no no Burnham in the casket lol
That Day I Will Always Remember ❤😂 .
The second death of Satan.
+Yolanda Drayton NO SHE IS COURAGEOUS FOR SPEAKING THE TRUTH!
+Yolanda Drayton you can clearly see in the video the state of the country and the people
Yolanda Drayton I said what i said and i stand by it. He was a brilliant man no doubt.. but he was also a wicked man.
The music 😊
Great man indeed
Who was king rigger in pnc
When I visited Guyana I was wondering disappointed at the neglect.
Burnham paid off their debts do why couldn't the opposition improve on it.
They could have improved on education and training for the people.
