Hua Chenyu is 100% better live. You really need to see him perform to fully appreciate how incredible he is as an artist. He arranges all the music himself and uses his voice as an instrument. He doesn't write lyrics, in fact he is known for singing songs without words. He never sticks to one genre either so you never know what to expect from him. I hope you check out more of his music.

You found the hidden gem of China!!! This pure soul is an outstanding composer, performer, singer. Please react to more from him. He is so unique and talented at rearrangements but also his original compositions. Nunchunks, wukong, heaven, bullfighting, arrival, seven personalities, fake monk. The list goes on and on. He is so talented at writing music. Can I recommend a you tube channel called hua chenyu English subs. They are a group of Martians (the name us fans are called) who have all his songs and performances translated into English.
HuaHua would normally play the piano for himself on stage. He didn't write this song, but he admires this composer and has done a couple of his songs. The tempo is rubato, you're right, until the drums come in. This song is lifted from a short film called Quasimoto's Gift. It's about the same length as Thriller and is quite interesting. The story is wild. Anyway, HuaHua probably recorded the background vocals himself. He did have backup singers at that time, so he may have had them doing vocals for this. He doesn't use them any more. Now he records all of the extra vocals himself. Please listen to more of HuaHua. His own compositions are stunning. Try either 7 Personalities or Bullfighting. Both are mind-blowing. Thanks for discovering him. He's a real gem. My favorite.
So glad you found Hua! He is so unique and his voice incredible. But the MELODIES and arrangements just take residence in my brain. To add to other recommendations: Child, Ordinary Path, Kings and Beggars, and the unbelievable harmonies on Namping Evening Bell.

You've reacted to Angelina Jordan, Dimash Kudaibergen and Hua Chenyu, I'd call them the three best in the world for artistic talent currently. Angelina defines blues and jazz, Dimash is the best technical singer in the world with the biggest range while also having heart and kindness, and Hua Chenyu is just a prodigy who will write and perform from a place inside himself regardless of how it makes others feel. Any of their songs would do you well for reactions and I can't even ask for any specific ones as they all mean so much to me.

So glad you found Hua Chenyu, but I warn you his music is addictive and you never know what you are going to get, multifaceted is the word. Lots of good suggestions in the comments below but I would like to add Aliens, one of my personal favorites, as someone who grew up with rock.
I always love how Hua mixed and “arrange” the layers and the instruments sounds in his songs… and I like how you react and explain them. This song is from 2014 album, but not composed by Hua.
You might be interested in the arrangement of the song Hua composed: Alien (2015), Qi Tian (OST in 2017 or singer in 2018, either one is good but different), Here we are (concert 2017), I don’t Care (singer 2018), Bullfight (Concert in 2019 or MV in 2020)

There’s a lot of his songs that most of the songs has unique “sounds” that always attracted me 😄

I would react to more of his tracks. He's more of a songwriter, but his live performances are excellent. He was on the same Singer (Chinese) show as Dimash, though on a later series.
There's a live performance called Fake Monk where the only accompaniment is Hua Chenyu playing the piano, so it might be a little simple if your focus is on the arrangement, but it's such a different and special sound. The audience was completely stunned into silence, most of them also completely froze. The atmosphere is really crazy.
Even if you don't film a reaction I recommend watching it on your own time anyways.

This song is not his own composition but he is also a composer himself. Giant Deer, Quasimodo's Gift, I don't care, Madhouse, The Mayfly, New World, Qi Tian, Bullfighting, Jackdaw Boy, 7 Personalities........ are all composed by him.

Hua is like Dimash in that he is another musical genius. He is one of the best live performers I have ever witnessed. He can also bring so much emotion that he can make me cry like a baby. If you want to see two dramatic performances do Dad, I'm Home with subs, ( I know you don't read the subs) and Fake Monk. Even if you do not read the lyrics while reacting, you may want to go back on your own and see what he was singing. In Hua's case , it makes a world of difference. He is very dynamic.

Wow, you went way back to his early stuff. "Dust in the Fireworks" is one of his timeless, gorgeous hits. Hua Hua has matured incredibly since then. I simply cannot stress how much I love Hua Chenyu. Been listening to music for 60+ years. Started with Mother's love of opera and on to the Beatles, Dylan, etc. Doors were great. But this guy is what I would call a complete package. His philosophy of life is an incredible beginning which allows him to speak, sing, and laugh from his Center. Many singers may have different technical chops, but HuaHua teaches your soul. Love Zhou Shen and Park Kiyoung, but I feel the most calm listening to this man. Even with Fake Monk, 7 Personalities, Nunchucks, Aliens, Child, Dad I'm Home, Madhouse, or the really incredible song from PuShu, Ordinary Path. That one slightly reorganized. Heaven is fantastic, the Tengri song. Then there are the duets with Su Shiding. Stunning performances. He is truly a Performance Artist.

He is my favorite artist. He composes my favorite music and his vocal tone is so beautiful. The lyrics are astounding. He's just really brilliant, I love him.
This was the song that introduced me to him, because I related to the lyrics so much. It's basically a warm hug to anyone who is lonely or perhaps an introvert and I love this melody as well.
Thia song remind me of the loneliness after the festival end, everyone heading home and you walk alone on the street look at the ash of the firework fall down like snow and slowly getting cold.

He was in a TV show where he was presented with a song and he had 24 hours to rearrange and perform the song. He consistently blew everyone away. Ashes to Fireworks from the MV QUASIMODO’S GIFT!! This is 2014 he has other songs he alone wrote in 2019.
I have a recommendation list, but it is not really in any particular order. "Numchucks", "Child", I am what I am", "Fake Monk", "Friend", and "Dad, I'm Home". With the song, "Dad, I'm Home", it is one of the saddest songs developed. Mind you, Hua Chenyu is a very unique artist doing his own thing. You never really know what you are going to get with each of his songs.
All great songs, but all are cover rearrangements. I would so much like to listen to hcy original compositions. He is no cover artist.

@@billg7531 Oh, I absolutely love all his songs, covers included. Fake Monk will always stand out. But he IS a composer and so many fans only recommend the same cover songs over and over again. He has such a brilliant and versatile reportoire to chose from. At present 90%(?) of all reactors react to the same 3 covers. Why not recommend eg Quasimodo’s Gift instead, for a change.

I personally do not like listening to new foreign songs with subtitles, as it is the performer that I am evaluating, not the song. I do agree with you though. He is a good composer. But, what he does with cover songs to make them his own is equally brilliant. For new people to Hua Hua, that could be a good start in discovering him.
I always recommend his composition Qi Tian from the Singer 2018 show as a place to start. There are many of his performances on the yt channels Hua Chenyu English Subs and Baby Bamboo.

Wonderful analysis. I was going to recommend Hua Chenyu to you, but you beat me to it. Hua Hua (nickname) is a genius with his arrangements, performances, and singing. He's considered one of the most influential singer/composers in China today and is one of the most versatile and unique artists you'll see. He's comfortable with any style and genre of music that will fit the song. He expresses so much emotion through singing, you can literally see him go into his own world and you just want to join in for the ride. His performances on stage are incredible, he owns that stage. I would recommend two songs for now, Qi Tian (sounds like Chee Tee Ann). Didn't expect this one, Hua Chen Yu is great. He also raps, if you ever get back to checking out his music I'd recommend checking out Qi Tian from the movie Wukong.
Changing gears a bit there's a band of Tuareg people from the Sahara Desert called Tinariwen think you might enjoy the song Sastanàqqàm. Also Pantomime by WJSN if you get back to korean pop, this song goes places would be interesting to hear your take on it.

You just scratched the surface of an incredible singer/composer/performer. "Unique" doesn't come anywhere near covering the genius of Hua Chenyu. Fun fact, Hua Chen Yu’s nick name is Hua Hua. Hua from Hua Chen Yu mean culture or literature. Hua Hua in his nick name means flower flower. Fans called him flower flower because he’s forever young. He’s already 30 and have a 1 year old daughter. 💕
Enjoyed your reaction. In an interview Hua said: “In my heart, musical composition is definitely greater than singing. In my heart …. I am into singing because when I am down writing a song, when the melody is played on a piano or by a guitar, I would think it sounded better if one had sung the song. So when a singer sings he appears merely as part of the timbre in a musical composition. He is not different among the guitar, drum and bass.”
Hua is a composer and arranger. He (with a few exceptions) does not write the lyrics, but has great input with the lyricist into what he wants the message of the song to convey.
Would love to hear more reactions from you regarding his more recent songs, especially the Mars Trilogy: I Really Want to Love this World, Madhouse, Conversations with Children of Mars (the concert version).
And then the Mars Healing Trilogy: I I Really Want Myself Back (expresses his struggles during a certain period of time), Meet When the Flowers Fall (expresses hope), Let’s go and Watch the Sunrise (future)

I saw on YT recommendation for your reaction to Pentatonix Hallelujah. Before listening to it, I checked your Home Page to see if there are any other singers you've reacted. I found this. I enjoy Hua Chenyu's songs. I also enjoyed your breakdown of it. It's too bad you didn't react to his song 'Nunchucks'. He did a variety of music genre in this song that hopefully would impress you! Not sure about the technical side, though, since I'm musically illiterate (tone deaf to the subtleties.)

The song 烟火里的尘埃 should mean "Ashes from fireworks", from the album 卡西莫多的礼物 (Quasimodo's gift). I'm studying Chinese so I went to look it up 😊

Hua-Hua is a wonderful singer-musician! I would love your take on his covers of Nunchucks, Fake Monk and Nanping Evening Bells. Would be great if you could maybe do a comparative analysis against the originals. I only know that I love his covers so much that I forget what the originals sound like.
Listen to Nunchucks, and Fake Monk. So many others. Seek video with English captions. Look for the video where he describes his childhood. Watch how he gets the audience to sing along.

I disagree, the MV is an excellent choice. Yes, he is a live artist, but that doesnt mean ignoring his studio work. Concert audio is often not the best..
